Accessible D&D dice are not one-size-fits-all: the right choice depends on how you want to read a result, handle dice, and take part in a roll. Braille dice offer tactile polyhedral results; large-print or high-contrast dice may help some low-vision players; digital rollers can provide text or spoken results; and trays and tactile map tools can address practical table barriers. Where possible, try an option in your usual lighting, device, and game setup before relying on it.

How to choose: braille, digital, or large print?

Start with the barrier you want to remove, rather than a disability label. Consider whether you want to read results by touch, see them from your normal seat, hear them, or ask another person to read them. Also consider whether you want to roll physical dice yourself, how much setup is manageable, and whether the tool suits your game.

Option Reading channel Setup or skill Game fit
Braille polyhedral dice Tactile Braille literacy or willingness to learn the numbering and orientation conventions A full polyhedral RPG set
Large-print or high-contrast dice Visual Find a type size, contrast, and die size that work at your usual distance and lighting Depends on the dice available; some tactile products are ordinary d6 pairs, not D&D sets
Digital rollers On-screen text or speech, depending on the tool Device, app, screen reader, and table workflow setup Can suit RPG rolls and dice pools; check the individual tool
Help from another player Another person reads or reports the result Agree on what help the player wants Can be used alongside physical or digital dice

These are options to compare, not rankings. There is no established comparative study in the cited sources showing that one format is best for a disability group. A player may prefer a mix—for example, rolling physical dice in a tray and using a digital roller for a large pool.

Where can you get braille D&D dice?

The DOTS RPG Project describes a braille polyhedral dice design with one braille cell per face and no engraved numerals. Its system maps letters A–J to results 1–10 and K–T to 11–20; a marked Touch Point Edge provides an orientation reference. The design may suit someone who already reads braille or wants to learn a consistent dice notation. A reference guide can help, but the player should decide whether the tactile markings are clear and the reading pace works for them.

DOTS says it provides free printable dice models and that its commercial dice are available through production partner Die Hard Dice. Printing requires access to a 3D printer, and the tactile quality of a printed model can vary. For people who cannot print a model themselves, Knights of the Braille points to See3D, which accepts requests for models.

One retail example is Die Hard Dice’s seven-piece acrylic set. The listing describes it as slightly oversized, with raised border edges, a sighted braille reference guide, and two differently tipped d10s for percentile rolls. Die Hard Dice listed it for $19.95 when accessed; price and stock can change. Check the current listing and confirm that the tactile layout works for the intended player.

Will large-print or high-contrast dice help with low vision?

They can, but larger dice alone do not guarantee legibility. Compare the numeral’s size and shape, contrast against the die, lighting, viewing distance, and whether the result is readable from the player’s normal position. Bold type or a high-contrast combination such as white on black may help some people, while another combination may work better for someone else. Knights of the Braille emphasizes personal preference rather than a universal color or size rule.

What is in the Sirius Disability Pride Dice Set?

In an announcement dated October 2, 2026, D&D Beyond described a seven-piece D&D Accessible Adventures – Disability Pride Dice Set made with Sirius. The announced features are increased font sizes, distinctive colors, OpenDyslexic type, an arch-style d4 intended to improve visibility, and an easy-open cap designed to help with identification and storage. A physical purchase includes a code for a digital version on D&D Beyond, and a digital-only version is also available. The announcement says the digital version is not a one-for-one replica of the physical dice.

These are specific design features, not proof that the set will work for every player. The announcement does not establish a retail price, independent testing, or universal effectiveness; availability may also change after the announcement. Distinctive colors are one feature among several and should not be assumed to address color-vision needs on their own.

Bailey Vaughan, D&D Beyond Senior Content Specialist and DAA Champion of Accessibility Advocacy and Education, said: “We knew going in that since the disability community is extremely diverse, we wouldn’t be able to create a set of dice that addresses every barrier a disabled player may face.” Vaughan added: “Instead, our goal is to show how small adjustments can make a huge difference in terms of accessibility.”

Are digital dice and screen-reader tools a good alternative?

Yes. Digital dice are a valid way to participate, whether a player wants spoken results, on-screen text, or a way to handle a dice pool without manually reading every physical die. Knights of the Braille’s guide describes DDR Dice Roller as designed for screen-reader users with text and spoken results. It also names Avrae, a Discord bot that can integrate with D&D Beyond character sheets, plus DeyesFree and Natural 20 for Apple devices.

Treat those names as starting points, not a guarantee of current compatibility. Verify support for the player’s device, operating system, screen reader, and preferred game workflow; app features and virtual tabletop accessibility can change with updates. Knights of the Braille notes that its guide author has not tested every virtual tabletop. D&D Beyond’s digital dice are another option, including the digital-only version described in the Sirius announcement.

What table aids help beyond the dice?

Use a tray to keep tactile dice together

A dice tray can limit bouncing, keep braille dice in a predictable area, and make them easier to find after a roll. This small change may help players who otherwise have to search for a die that has rolled away.

Consider a tactile map overlay for spatial play

DOTS describes a tactile map system that overlays an existing printed map with raised one-inch grid lines and interlocking sections. Shaped movers and contrasting colors distinguish structures and terrain. Whether it fits your table depends on the map and how the group handles movement and descriptions.

Check that result tokens match the game

DOTS also documents large, high-contrast result tokens for Powered by the Apocalypse games. They encode results equivalent to 2d6; they are not a substitute for D&D’s polyhedral dice.

How should a group try an option?

  1. Ask the player what they want to do independently. Find out whether they prefer to see, touch, or hear results, and whether they want to make physical rolls or use a digital tool. Do not assume a format based on diagnosis.
  2. Test the actual setup. For visual dice, check the type, contrast, lighting, distance, and angle from the player’s seat. For braille dice, allow time to learn the numbering and orientation marker. For digital tools, test the actual device, app, screen reader, and table workflow.
  3. Try a real game task. Check a typical d20 result, a percentile roll if relevant, or a dice pool. See whether the player can locate, read, and communicate the result at a comfortable pace.
  4. Adjust the surrounding table setup. Try a tray to contain physical dice, or agree on how another player can assist if requested. For map-heavy play, test whether a tactile overlay and distinctive movers fit the group’s map.
  5. Revisit the choice when needs or tools change. A player may prefer different methods for different rolls, devices, games, or days; digital accessibility can also shift after updates.

What to know about braille access to D&D material

Dice solve only the roll-reading part of play; rules and adventures are another access question. DOTS illustrates the format challenge by saying a 20-page A5 zine becomes a 50-page A4 braille book, and that a roughly 300-page D&D book would be about 40 braille volumes. These are the project’s illustrative estimates, not a universal conversion formula. The project also reports over five years of prototype testing with real users, design modification, and factory testing before its dice launched in December 2024; that is its own development history, not an independent evaluation.
