Choose Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition if you want a complete game you can play now, built around sailing, boat management, spirit passengers and emotionally direct farewells. Choose Abelina if you are willing to wait for a planned Q1 2027 PC release and prefer atmospheric platforming, environmental exploration, route-finding and a deliberately mysterious afterlife.
They share an afterlife setting, but they are not substitutes mechanically. Spiritfarer is a finished management and relationship adventure. Abelina is an upcoming, single-player exploration platformer in which movement and discovery are the main ways you make progress.

A mysterious afterlife rather than a conventional heaven
Abelina follows Vasily, who has died and awakened in Abelina. The setting is described as neither heaven nor hell, but a primitive new world with its own communities, resources and rules. That premise is important to the comparison: Abelina is not primarily a ferrying story in which the destination is already understood. It asks you to investigate what this afterlife is and what it means to be free from the attachments of life.

The game is being developed by Gabe Askew, with music and sound by Ryan Holladay, and published by Indieformer. The press material describes it as a hand-crafted afterlife adventure. Steam lists adventure and indie classifications, a single-player mode, five biomes and mature themes involving life and death.
Movement and route-finding are the core loop
Progress in Abelina comes from moving through the world rather than managing a household or vehicle. You platform across its environments, search for resources and discover routes that are initially unavailable. Branching paths make exploration a choice: the order in which you investigate places and people can shape what you find next.
One distinctive interaction involves timed hits that break open gourds and release seeds. You collect those seeds and make “gourdies,” which are used to open routes and help a small community survive. The hits are therefore an environmental timing mechanic, not an attack system. The official description specifically says there is no combat.

Companions and dialogue carry the meaning
Abelina’s world is designed to be understood through the people Vasily encounters, changing memories and the questions raised by life after death. Companions return to camp and contribute to the developing story, but the available descriptions intentionally leave the larger answers unresolved. Expect the game to ask you to interpret its symbols and conversations rather than simply deliver a single explanation of the afterlife.
That makes Abelina a good match for players who enjoy environmental storytelling and gradual discovery. It is less suitable if you want every objective, relationship and emotional payoff clearly signposted from the beginning.

Release status and what that means
Abelina is not released at the time of writing. Both the Steam listing and the publisher’s press kit target Q1 2027 for PC through Steam. A target window is not a guaranteed launch date, so a wishlist or follow decision is the appropriate action rather than a purchase. Features and timing can still change while development continues.
What Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition is
A finished management adventure about caring for the dead
Spiritfarer describes itself as “a cozy management game about dying.” You play the ferrymaster responsible for deceased spirits. Your boat is both your home base and your main tool: you build it, improve it, explore with it and provide living space for the passengers you meet.

The Farewell Edition contains the base game and three major content updates. Steam lists its release date as August 18, 2020, and identifies Thunder Lotus as developer and publisher. A PC Gamer review characterized it as a wholesome life-sim in which you ferry spirits into the afterlife, highlighting its compassionate treatment of death.
Building, gathering and requests create the rhythm
Spiritfarer’s loop is organized around practical care. You collect materials, construct and upgrade facilities on the boat, travel to different locations, and complete requests from spirit passengers. Those requests are the structure through which you learn who each passenger was, what they need and when they are ready to move on.
The result is a game about routines as much as destinations. Sailing to a new place matters, but so does returning to the boat, tending its spaces and responding to the people who live there. If you enjoy checklists, gradual upgrades and balancing several characters’ needs, Spiritfarer offers a clearer structure than Abelina’s open-ended discovery.

Farewells are more direct
Spiritfarer does not hide the emotional destination. You know that each passenger will eventually be released into the afterlife, and the tension comes from the relationship you build before that moment. The game treats grief through conversations, requests and repeated acts of care, giving each goodbye a relatively explicit narrative shape.

Abelina: atmospheric and uncertain
Abelina can be calm in the sense that it avoids combat, but its mood is not simply cheerful. The setting is surreal, the themes are mature, and the game is deliberately mysterious. Dark humor and the strangeness of a primitive afterlife are part of its identity. Its comfort, if you find it, comes from curiosity, beautiful handcrafted spaces and helping a community survive while you work out what the world is saying.
Choose this kind of coziness if you like quiet exploration with unanswered questions. Do not choose it expecting the clearly organized domestic routine of a life-sim.

Spiritfarer: warm, routine-driven and bittersweet
Spiritfarer is cozy in a more familiar management-game sense. You improve a boat, gather supplies, care for residents and settle into recurring tasks. The stories are compassionate, but the subject is still death. Its emotional rhythm alternates between everyday work and the final goodbye for each spirit.
If you want a game that lets you express care through repeated actions and gives each relationship a visible arc, Spiritfarer is the more straightforward fit. If you prefer to infer meaning from a world rather than complete a passenger’s final requests, Abelina is likely to be more satisfying.
Is Abelina like Spiritfarer?
Only at the level of premise and atmosphere. Both use an afterlife setting and treat death as a subject rather than a conventional game-over screen. Beyond that, their activities diverge:
- Abelina is a single-player platforming and exploration game about Vasily discovering a strange world.
- Spiritfarer is a management and relationship game about operating a boat for spirit passengers.
- Abelina withholds more information and asks you to interpret what you encounter.

Choose Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition if these statements sound like you

Spiritfarer is the safer recommendation for a player asking for a game today. It has a known release, a complete edition and a loop you can understand before buying: sail, gather, build, care and say goodbye.
What to play after Spiritfarer
If what you loved was the emotional idea of helping the dead, Abelina is worth watching because it also treats the afterlife as a place with its own community and meaning. However, the transition will be easiest if you specifically want a more exploratory and less management-focused experience.
If what you loved was arranging the boat, collecting materials and completing passenger requests, Abelina may not provide the same satisfaction. Its announced design points toward platforming, route-finding and interpretation rather than a comparable upgrade-and-care system. In that case, replaying Spiritfarer or choosing another finished management adventure may better match the activity you want, while Abelina remains a separate upcoming game to follow.

Availability, platform and purchase timing
Abelina
Abelina is planned for PC via Steam in Q1 2027. It is not currently a released product, so there is no finished version to purchase or review. Add it to your Steam wishlist or follow its listing if you want release notifications, and recheck the date before making plans around the launch window.
Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition
Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition is the currently available edition on Steam. Steam lists August 18, 2020 as its release date and identifies the edition as including the base game plus three major content updates. A review published at launch discussed a price of $30 in the United States and £24 in the United Kingdom; that historical figure should not be treated as the current store price.
Because one game is available and the other is still planned, this is not a conventional price-versus-price comparison. Your immediate purchase decision is Spiritfarer; your Abelina decision is whether its announced concept is worth following until release.
