The pattern appeared in groups and among people walking alone, but it does not mean that every person turns left, and the study did not determine what causes the tendency.
What the experiment found
The 2026 study reported a recurring counterclockwise rotation in people moving freely rather than trying to follow a straight route. The authors measured group motion with a statistic called rotational polarization: positive values represented counterclockwise motion. In Spanish arena trials, the time-averaged value was around 0.2 across conditions that varied crowd size and the proportion of participants classified as right-turners. That figure describes the group’s motion pattern; it is not the percentage of walkers who turned left.
The finding came from five experimental campaigns, not one crowd demonstration. Researchers tested enclosed arenas, a large outdoor schoolyard, Japanese participants, a nursery activity involving young children, and volunteers walking alone. The authors’ paper in Nature Communications, published June 10, 2026, characterizes the results as evidence of an intrinsic locomotor bias.
Why researchers tested different settings
Enclosed arenas and turning tendencies
Walls or the way participants were distributed might have encouraged a particular direction, while handedness or an already established turning tendency might have shaped the result. In the Spanish arena experiments, the counterclockwise pattern persisted when the researchers varied the share of people classified as right-turners and the crowd size. It also appeared in groups of left-handed participants and people classified as right-turners, making those factors insufficient as explanations for the overall pattern.

An open schoolyard
More than 100 teenage students moved in a 50 by 60 metre schoolyard. Counterclockwise rotation persisted even in this open setting, weakening the explanation that the pattern was simply caused by following an arena’s walls or by its geometry.
Experiments in Japan
The researchers tested participants in Japan to examine whether local conventions for stepping aside to avoid collisions accounted for the effect. The counterclockwise tendency remained, suggesting that those conventions alone did not explain it.

A nursery activity
In a Japanese nursery activity with children about five years old, the reported polarization exceeded 0.7. This was a particular rhythmic group-play setting, so its result should not be treated as a measure of how young children generally walk.
Walking alone
More than 200 volunteers walked one at a time in an empty arena. The authors’ account says a clear majority still moved counterclockwise. Since the tendency appeared without a crowd, social interaction cannot be its only source; individual movement may help seed the larger group pattern.

What the study does—and does not—say about the cause
The researchers did not find a relationship between the bias and handedness, dominant foot, dominant eye, or sex. They have not established its cause. Inner-ear asymmetry is mentioned as a possible direction for future investigation, not a demonstrated explanation. Coauthors Iñaki Echeverría Huarte, Angel Garcimartín Montero, and Iker Zuriguel Ballaz put the uncertainty plainly in their explanatory account: “We still don’t know what causes this bias at the individual level.”
The finding is about a group-level tendency during free roaming, alongside evidence that a similar tendency can occur in individuals. It is not a claim that every person turns left on every walk, nor does it establish a practical intervention that would change pedestrian movement.

How this differs from blindfolded walking in circles
A separate 2009 study asked whether people could maintain a straight course in unfamiliar surroundings, including while blindfolded. Participants’ paths could form small circles, but the average directional bias across the group was not significantly different from zero. Only three of 15 participants showed strong, consistent veering in one direction. The authors proposed that sensorimotor noise may accumulate when someone lacks an external reference for recalibrating a sense of straight ahead.
That result concerns trying to walk straight without visual guidance; the 2026 experiments concern people freely moving around with their surroundings available. The two findings therefore do not show the same universal effect. The earlier study’s authors published their results in Current Biology in 2009.

What the result could mean for shared spaces
The 2026 authors note that pedestrian movement may matter for planning and managing places such as transport hubs. Their experiments establish a movement tendency, not that a particular layout or management change improves safety, flow, or comfort. Applying the finding to a real shared space would require evidence about that setting and its users.
