A custom virtual-reality game was followed by better visual-acuity test scores in a six-week study of 10 adults. But the researchers found no significant change in objective refraction, the measurement used to assess refractive error. That means the result is an early finding about test scores—not evidence that a VR game cures ordinary myopia, treats amblyopia, or is ready for patients.
What the VR game asked participants to do
Masahiro Kawamori and Masataka Imura of Kwansei Gakuin University developed the prototype in Unity for Meta Quest 2. Their paper, “Verification of the Effect of a VR Game Aimed at Vision Recovery on Young Adults,” appeared in the Information Processing Society of Japan’s Interaction 2025 proceedings on 23 February 2025.
In the game, targets move along three lanes at different apparent distances. Each target displays a Landolt C—a ring with a gap, like the symbol used in many visual-acuity tests. Players identify the gap’s direction using controller input while shifting attention among targets.
The researchers designed the game around near-to-far focusing, looking toward distant targets, and binocular stereopsis. The paper describes these as intended elements of the exercise; the study does not establish that they repair the eye or produce lasting improvement.

Who took part, and what was measured?
The six-week experiment included 10 adults aged 22 to 36 without eye disease. Three participants used no correction, six wore glasses, and one wore contact lenses. The requested schedule was at least one session per week and an average of at least one session every three days.
Researchers measured visual acuity with Landolt rings and measured objective refraction before and after the experiment. These are different outcomes: visual acuity is a measure of how clearly someone can resolve a test target, while refraction assesses the eye’s optical focusing error.

What changed—and what did not
| Measure | Before | After six weeks | Reported result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mean visual acuity, LogMAR | 0.057 ± 0.121 | −0.186 ± 0.084 | The authors reported a statistically significant change (Wilcoxon signed-rank test, p < 0.005). |
| Mean spherical equivalent, diopters | −3.431 ± 2.524 | −3.425 ± 2.574 | No statistically significant change (p > 0.05). |
These are the authors’ measurements from a 10-person pilot, not a treatment effect established for a wider population. LogMAR values that are lower indicate better measured acuity, so the group’s mean score improved. But the near-identical mean spherical-equivalent values—and the authors’ report of no significant refractive change—do not show that the game corrected myopia.
The paper also gives an individual example: one participant’s left-eye decimal acuity changed from 0.7 to 1.8. That is a change in a visual-acuity test measurement, not proof that the eye’s underlying refractive error was cured.

Why the result does not establish a myopia treatment
A clarification reported by Mogura VR says the improvement concerned pseudomyopia associated with tension in the focusing muscles, rather than true myopia associated with the eye’s shape. It also notes a possible practice effect: participants repeatedly identified Landolt C gap directions in the game, and the acuity test used the same kind of symbol. Better performance could therefore reflect familiarity with the task, at least in part.
The study was small, had no comparison group described in the reported findings, and measured outcomes before and after only six weeks. It does not establish how durable the acuity-score change is or how much the game itself caused it. ASCII.jp reported that the researchers saw a need for controlled follow-up to test whether other game elements, including eye movements or visual patterns, contributed to the result.

Does it treat amblyopia or help children?
This study does not demonstrate either. Its participants were adults aged 22 to 36 without eye disease, and its reported outcomes were visual acuity and refraction. It was not evidence from a child cohort or a study showing that the game treats amblyopia. Anecdotes about improvement cannot fill that evidence gap.

The paper documents a research prototype built for Meta Quest 2; the sources cited here do not establish that the game is publicly available. The headset is the hardware used in the experiment, not an eyesight treatment, and buying one does not provide access to a proven therapy. Anyone concerned about blurred vision or a change in eyesight should seek an eye examination rather than rely on an unvalidated VR exercise.
