A teardown of one Wolverine limited-edition PS5 Slim found a revised motherboard that makes its CR2032 CMOS battery easier to remove and replace. The board also has a different layout and revised cooling components, but no evidence yet shows that every PS5 Slim has this design—or that it runs cooler or performs better.

What changed in the revised PS5 Slim?

On October 2, 2026, Video Games Chronicle reported that console technician and modder Modyfikator89 opened a Wolverine limited-edition PS5 Slim and found an EDM-051 motherboard. In that console, the CR2032 CMOS coin-cell battery was easier to remove and replace than in earlier board designs, according to the teardown report. Video Games Chronicle’s report also describes a different motherboard layout and revised cooling components.

PlayStation LifeStyle reported the finding on October 1, quoting the technician’s post about the refreshed board. That corroborates the teardown account, but neither report is a Sony announcement. PlayStation LifeStyle’s coverage attributes the comments to Modyfikator89, not Sony.

Why easier CMOS battery access matters

The CR2032 is an internal CMOS coin cell, not the rechargeable battery in a DualSense controller. Easier access could make eventual battery replacement less cumbersome for a technician or experienced repairer. The reports do not give a replacement schedule, repair-time estimate, or Sony-approved procedure, and they do not recommend opening the console.

PlayStation®5 Digital Edition (slim)
  • Model Number CFI-2000
  • Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
  • Vertical Stand sold seperately

The inspected console reportedly came with older manuals that do not describe the board change. For setup and model identification, Sony’s official PS5 setup guidance covers the CFI-2000 model group, which Sony identifies as the Slim family, but does not mention the EDM-051 motherboard.

What the cooling changes do—and do not—show

A teardown can reveal that cooling components differ; it cannot, by itself, establish a real-world cooling benefit. The reports provide no comparative temperature measurements, noise readings, gaming benchmarks, or reliability results. It is accurate to say revised cooling components were reported. It is not established that this PS5 Slim runs cooler, quieter, faster, or lasts longer.

Does every PS5 Slim have the EDM-051 board?

No. The available evidence identifies one inspected Wolverine limited-edition console. It does not establish a universal retail SKU, a region-by-region rollout, or an exterior box label buyers can use to guarantee the EDM-051 board. Sony’s support documentation identifies the Slim model group but does not identify this motherboard.

Sony’s PS5 product page explains that the Slim Digital Edition supports a separately sold removable disc drive. That is useful product context, but it does not verify the internal board fitted to a particular console or listing. Until Sony or model-specific evidence confirms broader availability, treat EDM-051 as a finding from the reported limited-edition teardown—not a feature to assume when buying any PS5 Slim.

What buyers and owners should do

  • Buying a console: Choose based on confirmed listing details such as model, included disc drive, and stated storage—not an unverified promise of easier battery access.
  • Checking an existing console: The cited reports do not provide an external identifier that confirms the EDM-051 board. A listing or box label is not established as proof.
  • Considering battery replacement: Do not treat the report as a Sony service instruction. Consult Sony support or a qualified repair professional before opening the console.
