AppFlowy is a credible Notion alternative to consider if you want an open-source workspace and more control over where it runs and where data is stored. Its maker describes options that include self-hosting, using your own cloud, or running in an air-gapped environment. That can make AppFlowy a better fit for some privacy and deployment requirements—but it does not establish that AppFlowy is universally more private or more powerful than Notion, OneNote, or Obsidian.
Why AppFlowy is a Notion alternative
AppFlowy’s documentation calls it “an open-source alternative to Notion” and says users are in charge of their data and customizations. Its official site describes it as an AI workspace for projects, wikis, teams, documents, and databases. That combination makes it a plausible option for people seeking a Notion-style workspace with greater control over deployment.
AppFlowy says it can be deployed on your own infrastructure, in your cloud, or in an air-gapped environment, and that you control where data is stored and processed. Does AppFlowy give you more privacy?
It may give you more control over deployment and data location, which can matter if your requirements call for hosting systems yourself or keeping them within a particular environment. But “more private” depends on what you are protecting, how the service is configured, who can access it, and how it is maintained. The vendor’s positioning alone does not establish a universal privacy advantage over Notion.

Self-hosting also shifts responsibilities. Someone must manage hosting, backups, updates, access controls, and recovery. If those tasks are not handled reliably, choosing a self-hosted deployment may not produce the outcome you expect. Compare the responsibilities with your actual threat model and the people and systems available to support it.
Is AppFlowy more powerful than OneNote or Obsidian?
There is not enough evidence here to call AppFlowy more powerful than OneNote or Obsidian across the board. “Powerful” can mean different things: databases and team workspaces, note-taking workflows, extensibility, or control over hosting. AppFlowy’s stated focus on projects, wikis, teams, docs, and databases may suit readers who want a broad workspace, but that is not a feature-by-feature benchmark against either product.

Choose based on the work you need to do and the constraints that matter: deployment options, data control, collaboration, supported devices, and whether the workflows you rely on can be moved. AppFlowy says it supports macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android, and web, with sync across devices; check its current platform and sync details before committing.
Hosted versus self-hosted: what changes?

How to evaluate a switch from Notion
Notion documents exports for a page, database, or entire workspace, including PDF, CSV, and HTML. It says users can export this content at any time; export availability does not guarantee that another product will reproduce every feature or relationship. See Notion’s export instructions.
- Export representative material from Notion. Use the documented export options for the pages, databases, or workspace you want to assess.
- Test the destination before moving everything. Try representative pages, files, and databases in AppFlowy, and check that important formatting and database relationships behave as you need.
- Test real collaboration workflows. Verify the way your team shares and works with content rather than assuming an export preserves those workflows.
- Decide who will operate the deployment. If you plan to self-host, assign responsibility for updates, backups, access, and recovery before relying on it.
AppFlowy’s site says it offers migration assistance and will not touch customer data during migration. Treat that as the vendor’s claim and confirm its current terms directly with AppFlowy before using the service.

- Consider it if an open-source Notion alternative and control over deployment or data location are important to your decision.
- Look more closely before switching if your work depends on specific Notion database behavior, formatting, or collaboration workflows; test those items rather than assuming migration will preserve them.
