Font rendering turns Unicode text into visible marks by selecting fonts, shaping characters into positioned glyphs, scaling their outlines, converting those outlines into pixel coverage, and drawing the result. Shaping decides which glyphs appear and where; rasterization turns those glyphs into pixels. The exact route varies by operating system, application, font, size, and display.

How does text turn into pixels?

Text begins as Unicode code points, but a renderer cannot always treat each code point as an independent letter to draw. A layout system first organizes text into runs that share properties such as script, language, direction, and font choice. In a common GNOME architecture, Pango handles segmentation above HarfBuzz, as described in the HarfBuzz integration guide.

For example, a letter followed by a combining accent consists of separate Unicode code points, yet the accent must be positioned in relation to the letter. In other scripts, the appropriate glyph forms and their placement can depend on neighboring characters. These are reasons text must be processed as a sequence rather than printed as one unrelated glyph per code point.

What does a font renderer actually do?

1. Match text to fonts

The system chooses a font family and face for each run or cluster. A cluster may include a base character and a combining mark. If the requested font lacks the needed glyph, or a web font is not available yet, the system may use a fallback font. CSS font matching and fallback behavior are specified in the CSS Fonts Module Level 4.

2. Shape text into glyphs

A shaping engine applies the font’s layout rules to map input text to glyph IDs and assign their positions. That can involve contextual forms, substitutions, and spacing. The HarfBuzz Manual describes its output as properly formatted and positioned glyph output for Unicode input. HarfBuzz shapes text; it does not, by that fact alone, paint the glyphs onto a screen.

3. Scale outlines for the intended size

Font glyphs are generally described as outlines in a coordinate system relative to the font’s EM square. The renderer scales those outlines for the requested size and output resolution. For the EM square’s pixel size, FreeType gives the relationship pixel_size = point_size * resolution / 72; outline coordinates are then scaled in relation to the font’s EM size. See FreeType’s glyph-outline conventions.

This is why 12-point text does not mean that every visible letter is 12 pixels high. Point size is a nominal typographic size, and the visible height depends on resolution, the font’s metrics, and where its designer placed the outlines within the EM square. Different letters in the same font also have different shapes and heights.

4. Fit outlines to a pixel grid and rasterize

For TrueType outlines, the documented path includes scaling the outline, interpreting instructions to grid-fit it, scan-converting it, and rendering the resulting bitmap. Grid fitting, often called hinting, can help preserve useful features such as stem widths at small sizes. Microsoft describes the TrueType process in its OpenType TrueType fundamentals.

There is no single grid-fitting method used everywhere. FreeType distinguishes explicit, implicit, and automatic grid fitting, which make different trade-offs in quality, speed, file size, and consistency. The effect also depends on the font, renderer, and size; hinting is not a guarantee that all systems will produce identical letterforms. FreeType discusses these choices in its outline documentation and its guidance on hinting and text rendering.

5. Composite and draw the result

Rasterization produces pixel coverage for each glyph. A graphics system combines that coverage with foreground and background colors, then draws it to the output surface. In the typical Linux arrangement described by HarfBuzz, FreeType may produce glyph bitmaps that are drawn by Cairo, outside HarfBuzz’s control. The handoff illustrates why “the renderer” is often a pipeline of components, not one program.

Antialiasing, compositing, gamma treatment, display response, and subpixel techniques can all influence how glyph edges look. Microsoft’s explanation of TrueType and ClearType describes one approach involving display subpixels; it should not be taken as a description of every modern display or rendering stack.

Why does the same font look different on a computer and phone?

Two devices can differ at several stages, even when they use a font with the same name. They may select different font files or fallback fonts, apply different shaping or hinting behavior, rasterize at different sizes and resolutions, or composite the results differently. An application may use the operating system’s text stack or its own, and the physical display’s pixel geometry and response also affect perceived edges.

  • Font and fallback: A requested face may be missing, or a particular character may not be covered, so some text can come from another font.
  • Outline handling: Font format support and the interpretation of font instructions can affect grid fitting.
  • Rasterization and compositing: Grayscale or subpixel strategies, antialiasing, and gamma treatment alter edge appearance.
  • Size and display: Resolution, pixel geometry, and the size at which glyphs are rendered change the final coverage and its appearance.
  • Application stack: Apps do not necessarily delegate every stage to the same system components.

These are mechanisms for explaining differences, not a ranking of operating systems. The cited documentation describes the available techniques, but does not establish a controlled cross-platform comparison showing that one renderer always looks best.

Why does a website briefly show a different font?

A browser can display text before a requested web font has finished loading. CSS font-display policies define how text behaves while a web font is unavailable and what happens if it does not load: depending on the policy and timing, the browser may initially hide text, show a fallback, swap to the downloaded font, or continue using fallback. The relevant behaviors are specified in the CSS Fonts Module Level 4.

When the web font replaces a fallback, letter shapes and text widths can change. That can make a page look different after loading even though its text and CSS have not changed. Font loading is therefore part of the visible rendering experience, alongside shaping and rasterization.

Where shaping ends and rasterization begins

Shaping answers which glyphs represent a run of text and where those glyphs belong relative to one another. Rasterization answers how a glyph’s outline becomes coverage on a particular pixel grid. Keeping these jobs distinct helps explain why correctly shaped text can still have different edge appearance across renderers, and why a rasterizer cannot by itself resolve every character-to-glyph decision.

One documented example is a Linux-style arrangement in which HarfBuzz shapes text and FreeType rasterizes glyphs, with another graphics component drawing the resulting bitmaps. Other platforms and applications can arrange their components differently; the names and boundaries in that example are not a universal architecture.
