Google lists data-center facilities in Ireland, the Netherlands, Finland, Belgium and Germany. Its most recent major European expansion announcement, made in September 2026, commits €13 billion over two years to AI and digital infrastructure in Finland. The details vary by site: Hamina is known for seawater cooling and heat recovery, while Germany combines a Google-owned facility in Hanau with cloud regions in Frankfurt and Berlin-Brandenburg.

Where Google’s European data centers are

Google’s official data-center directory is the best guide to its publicly listed facilities. It names Dublin in Ireland, Eemshaven in the Netherlands, Hamina in Finland, and facilities in Belgium and Germany. Farciennes, Belgium, is marked as in development. The directory does not mean every site has the same function or that every Google Cloud region is a Google-owned data center.

Country Publicly listed location or infrastructure What is established
Ireland Dublin Google’s directory lists a data-center location in Dublin.
Netherlands Eemshaven Google’s directory lists a data-center location in Eemshaven.
Finland Hamina Google lists Hamina as a data-center location and describes its seawater cooling and heat-recovery systems.
Belgium Belgian facilities; Farciennes in development Google’s directory lists Belgian facilities and identifies Farciennes as in development; it does not establish a completion date there.
Germany Hanau; Frankfurt and Berlin-Brandenburg cloud regions Google describes a Google-owned Hanau facility and cloud regions in Frankfurt and Berlin-Brandenburg. A cloud region is not synonymous with one data-center building.

Google’s EU policy brief also names Denmark among EU countries with data centers. That broader policy statement is not the same as a named entry in the company’s current facilities directory, so it should not be read as identifying a specific Danish site.

Why these sites matter—and what Google has disclosed

Data centers provide the computing and storage behind online services; Google also uses them to support its cloud infrastructure. The company says its facilities are designed with security in mind and describes energy planning in relation to grids and renewable-energy development. Those broad priorities help explain what matters when locating large facilities, but Google’s public material cited here does not give a country-by-country account of why it selected Dublin, Eemshaven, Hamina or its Belgian sites.

Four practical considerations help readers understand the trade-offs, while keeping the distinction between stated facts and site-specific rationale clear:

  • Grid and clean-energy access: Google connects its energy strategy to grid and renewable-energy development. The material does not provide comparable site-level grid capacity or clean-energy percentages for the listed European facilities.
  • Cooling and water: Hamina is the specific European example Google describes: seawater cooling, plus heat recovery for nearby homes and businesses. Comparable cooling or water-use details for the other locations are not stated in the cited material.
  • Proximity to users and cloud regions: Facilities and cloud regions support services in different ways. Google identifies Frankfurt and Berlin-Brandenburg as cloud regions, but does not provide comparable latency or user-distance figures for the named data-center locations.
  • Local effects: Google discusses community and energy partnerships, particularly in its Finland announcement. The available statements do not establish comparable local employment or economic-impact figures for every European site.

Hamina: seawater cooling and recovered heat

Hamina stands out in Google’s public sustainability descriptions because it uses seawater for cooling. Google also says it recovers heat from the data center and supplies it to nearby homes and businesses. That gives the site a local heat-reuse component, rather than treating cooling and energy use only as facility-level concerns. The description does not establish that other Google sites use the same system.

How sustainable are Google’s data centers?

Google reports that its data centers had a fleet-wide average power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.09 in 2025 and used 83% less overhead energy than the industry average. These are company-reported fleet figures, not independently audited comparisons for each European facility.

PUE compares a data center’s total energy use with the energy used by its computing equipment; a lower value indicates less overhead energy for cooling, power delivery and other facility operations. The 1.09 figure is an average across Google’s data-center fleet, not a Hamina-specific or Europe-only measurement. It also does not, by itself, measure the carbon intensity of electricity or water use.

Germany: a facility, cloud regions and renewable-energy plans

Google’s Germany announcement describes a €1 billion investment package for the country’s digital future. It combines expansion of the Frankfurt cloud region through a Google-owned facility in Hanau, a Berlin-Brandenburg cloud region, and a broad renewable-energy plan. These are related parts of Google’s German infrastructure strategy, but they are not all the same kind of site: Hanau is identified as a facility, while Frankfurt and Berlin-Brandenburg are cloud regions.

Finland: Google’s latest major European expansion announcement

In September 2026, Google announced a €13 billion commitment over two years for AI and digital infrastructure in Finland. The announced plan covers Hamina and new work in Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala, alongside clean-energy and local-partnership components. Google called it its largest single investment in Europe.

The €13 billion is a forward-looking investment commitment, not a report of money already spent. Construction timing, capacity, jobs and energy-project details should likewise be understood as elements of the announced plan, not completed outcomes. The announcement makes Finland the clearest example of Google’s current European expansion priorities, but it does not replace the facilities directory as a map of operating and developing data-center locations.
