USB-C can support up to 240W, but the connector alone does not tell you how much power a device will receive. The charger, device and cable must support the same USB Power Delivery capabilities, and they negotiate an operating level together. For most buying decisions, check the charger’s output, the device’s requirements and the cable’s power marking—not just whether all three have USB-C plugs.
How many watts can USB-C deliver?
USB Power Delivery (PD) lets a power source advertise what it can provide and a connected device request what it needs. The resulting power contract can change as the device’s needs change. USB-IF describes PD as supporting reversible power direction and allowing devices to take only the power they require; it also coexists with USB Battery Charging.
The maximum depends on the PD generation and power range supported by every part of the connection. USB PD 3.1 introduced Extended Power Range (EPR), raising the system maximum to 240W. USB-IF’s current PD overview identifies the following EPR fixed voltage levels:
| USB-IF EPR voltage level | Corresponding power | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 28V | 140W | An EPR operating level for compatible equipment. |
| 36V | 180W | An EPR operating level for compatible equipment. |
| 48V | 240W | The maximum EPR level in USB-IF’s current PD overview. |
The International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC 62680-1-2:2026 describes USB Power Delivery as supporting up to 100W in Standard Power Range (SPR) and 240W in EPR. These are system limits, not promises made by a connector or charger in isolation: the source, sink, cable and negotiated contract all have to support the target.

Do you need a 100W or 240W USB-C cable?
Choose a cable rated for at least the power you expect the connection to negotiate. USB-IF compliance rules require USB-C-to-USB-C cables to carry a 60W or 240W power marking, as stated in its 2022 compliance update. A 240W cable can support an EPR connection when the charger and device also support it; it does not make a lower-rated charger or device deliver more power.
For a setup where you need more than 60W, look for the 240W marking and confirm the cable’s compliance status rather than relying on packaging language alone. A cable’s data capability is a separate specification: power rating does not tell you its data rate, length or other supported features.

What is the difference between USB PD, PPS and AVS?
USB Power Delivery
PD is the negotiation system that allows a source and a device to agree on a supported power level. It is what makes higher-power charging possible over USB-C, but a device only receives a level that the complete connection can support.
Programmable Power Supply (PPS)
PPS is an adjustable-voltage mode within the PD ecosystem. When both charger and device support PPS, it can improve charging control and reduce conversion losses. The label alone does not promise a particular charging speed: the device must support PPS, and its charging behavior depends on the negotiated connection.

Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS)
IEC 62680-1-2:2026 adds AVS in its technical revision. AVS and PPS are both adjustable-voltage capabilities associated with USB power, but their labels are not interchangeable; check the specific support listed for the charger and device rather than assuming one implies the other.
Can any USB-C charger fast-charge a laptop or phone?
No. USB-C describes the connector, not a guaranteed charging rate or compatibility level. A USB-C charger may provide less power than a laptop needs, or lack a charging mode a particular phone uses. A higher-rated charger does not force a device to take its maximum output: PD lets the device request a supported level.

(3) Faster data sync (480Mbps) with minimal signal interference
Before choosing a charger, compare the specifications for both the charger and the device:
- Maximum negotiated wattage: Check the device’s charging requirements and the charger’s output capabilities.
- Power range: For targets above 100W, confirm EPR support in the charger, device and cable; a charger’s headline wattage alone is not enough.
- PPS or AVS: Verify the exact mode your device supports if you want that mode’s charging control.
- Ports and power sharing: Check the output available from the port you will use, including whether connecting another device changes per-port power.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the charger’s supported output and charging modes match the device. If any component supports less than the others, the negotiated connection is limited by what the complete setup can support.
How can you tell whether a USB-C cable is safe and certified?
Start with the printed power marking: USB-IF compliance rules call for USB-C-to-USB-C cables to be marked 60W or 240W. For a cable advertised for 240W EPR, look for the approved 240W logo and verify that the cable has passed the applicable USB-IF tests.

Do not treat a “PD” or “240W” claim on a package as proof of certification. USB-IF says its logos may be used only with products that have passed USB-IF compliance testing and are currently on the Integrators List. Check the product record in USB-IF’s certified-product information and confirm that the listed product matches the exact model you are considering. A listing identifies a standards-conforming product; it does not establish a retailer’s stock or endorse the retailer.
Certification and power rating also do not answer every cable question. If you need high-speed data, a particular cable length or a specific connector arrangement, check those specifications separately.
What to check when comparing USB-C chargers and cables
Compare the components as a system rather than choosing by the largest wattage printed on one item. For each candidate, verify the maximum negotiated wattage, SPR or EPR support, PPS or AVS support, cable power marking, data rate, connector type and length, USB-IF certification or conformity status, port count and per-port power sharing, and compatibility with the device.
