First check the platform: the official Steam listing for A Bird Story documents Windows, macOS and SteamOS + Linux, with a release date of 7 November 2014. It does not document a PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch edition. If you are trying to run the PC version through streaming or another console-like device, use the PC fixes below; if the symptom affects the console itself, follow the platform troubleshooting sections.
Is A Bird Story available on PS4, Xbox or Switch?
No official console release is documented in the game’s Steam listing. The listed operating systems are Windows, macOS and SteamOS + Linux. Therefore, a controller, sound or black-screen problem on a PlayStation 4, Xbox or Nintendo Switch is not automatically an A Bird Story bug: you may be dealing with a streamed PC session, a compatibility layer, an unrelated application, or the console’s own audio/video chain.
Identify which of these situations applies before changing settings:

If you bought or downloaded something labelled A Bird Story for a console, verify the publisher, store listing and title. Do not assume that a similarly named product is the 2014 PC game.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Controller not responding on the PC version
The documented player workaround is to make Steam Input present the controller as an Xbox 360-style gamepad. This is a community report, not a guaranteed feature supported by the developer, and menu names can vary slightly with Steam updates.
Configure a Steam Controller as an Xbox 360 pad
- Start Steam and connect the controller before launching the game.
- Open the game’s controller configuration outside the game. The player who reported success said the in-game overlay did not work, so do not rely on pressing the overlay shortcut after A Bird Story has started.
- Set the controller’s output or emulation to an Xbox 360 controller layout.
- Launch the game and test movement, selection and the confirm/action button.
If the game still ignores the pad, close it and try the community configuration route described by another player:
- Open Steam Big Picture.
- Choose Manage Game.
- Open Controller Configuration.
- Select Browse Configs, then Community.
- Choose a configuration that maps the game to an Xbox 360-style controller, apply it and relaunch.
Community layouts are user-created. A layout may contain incorrect bindings, so inspect the mapping before treating a failed attempt as a game defect.

The same player suggested binding the controller to the game’s keyboard controls: the arrow keys for directional movement and Spacebar for the action or confirm input. This can work when the game receives keyboard events but does not recognize the physical controller.

- Map the left, right, up and down controls to the four arrow keys.
- Map the primary action to Spacebar.
- Leave unused buttons unassigned until the basic controls work.
- Test in a save or scene where movement and interaction are both possible.
If arrow-key movement works but Spacebar does not, verify that the binding sends a keyboard press rather than an analog-button signal. If neither works, test the keyboard directly. A direct keyboard failure points to focus, streaming or operating-system input rather than the controller profile.
When a controller works in Steam but not in the game
- Exit the game completely before changing the layout; then relaunch so the new virtual device is created.
- Disconnect other gamepads, wheels and virtual-controller software temporarily to remove competing inputs.
- Click the game window after launch so it has keyboard focus.
- For a streamed setup, test the controller at the host PC. If it works locally but not remotely, correct the streaming device’s input forwarding before changing the game layout.
There is no documented native-console controller profile to repair. If a real console reports that the title cannot be launched or does not accept input, confirm the software identity and platform availability first.
No music or sound in A Bird Story
For the PC version, check the game’s own audio switches before reinstalling files or changing operating-system drivers. In a developer discussion, the developer identified unchecked BGM (background music) and BGS (background sound) options as the cause of a player’s silence and instructed the player to enable them in the F1 menu.
Enable BGM and BGS from the F1 menu
- Launch A Bird Story and press F1 to open its options menu.
- Find the BGM and BGS checkboxes.
- Enable both options. BGM controls background music; BGS controls background sound effects.
- Return to the game and test a scene that contains music and a sound effect.
The developer’s exact guidance was: “It definitely sounds like the BGM (background music) and BGS (background sound) options being unchecked caused it.”

Long). Notice: Please download the game emulator first before start the games, and then you must manually set the buttons and directionals within the emulator you're using, and the controller not automatically assigns buttons/directional axes. If on the Steam platform, you need to first enable Steam's "Universal Controller Configuration Support" and then restart Steam. After entering the game, you also need to manually bind key positions in the game

If the cursor is missing in the F1 menu
The developer also described a way to reach the options when the mouse pointer is not visible: place the cursor around the location of the options before pressing F1, then click to enable the checkboxes. Move the mouse over the expected checkbox area, press F1, and click each option even if the pointer is difficult to see. Close and reopen the menu to confirm that the checks remain enabled.
Separate game silence from a system audio problem
- Play another application on the same computer. If it is also silent, check the operating system’s output device, volume and mute state.
- If other applications play normally but A Bird Story does not, recheck BGM and BGS before reinstalling.
- For a streamed session, verify volume at both the host PC and the receiving device. A muted stream can make a correctly configured game appear silent.
- After changing the output device, restart the game so it can reopen its audio channel.
Verifying files and reinstalling are not substitutes for enabling the two in-game options. Use those steps only after confirming the settings and the wider system audio path.
Black screen, no image or a distorted display
No console-specific A Bird Story display fix is documented because no console edition is listed. First determine whether the game’s window is failing on the PC or whether the screen is losing the entire console or streaming signal.
PC or streamed-game checks
- Confirm that the host computer is running the game and that the game window has not been minimized behind the streaming client.
- Switch temporarily to the host display. If the image appears there, troubleshoot the stream, receiver, HDMI connection or television input rather than the game.
- Reconnect the display cable and select the correct input on the television or monitor.
- Close overlays and input tools that may capture the game window, then relaunch.
- Test another application through the same stream. A blank stream across applications indicates a streaming or display path fault.
If the host itself shows a black window while other software displays correctly, verify the PC’s graphics output and game-window focus. The available evidence does not establish a particular resolution, renderer or graphics setting as an A Bird Story-specific cure, so avoid inventing one.

Generic PlayStation 4 display and audio troubleshooting
Use this section only when the symptom is on a PS4 system or its connected television, not as proof that A Bird Story has a PS4 port. Sony’s general guidance targets the HDMI and system signal path.
No picture or intermittent picture
- Secure both ends of the HDMI cable. Replace it if the connector is damaged or the signal remains unstable.
- Try a different HDMI input on the television.
- Connect the PS4 directly to the display, bypassing a receiver, sound bar, capture device or switch.
- Power off the console and display, disconnect power briefly, then restart both devices.
- Check for system-software and display-firmware updates.
Test after each change. If direct connection restores the picture, reconnect intermediary equipment one item at a time to identify the failing link.
No audio on PS4
- Confirm that the television or receiver is not muted and that its volume is audible.
- Set the PS4 audio output to the HDMI device that is actually connected to the display.
- Update the PS4 system software.
- Try another HDMI cable.
- Remove sound bars, receivers and capture devices temporarily and test the PS4 directly on the television.
These are console-chain remedies. They cannot enable BGM or BGS in the PC game, and they cannot establish compatibility for software that has no documented PS4 release.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGeneric Nintendo Switch sound checks
Nintendo documents a behavior that often looks like a game audio failure: when the Switch is docked, its built-in speakers automatically turn off. In docked mode, listen through the television or connected audio equipment instead.
Best Value
- Wired Controller, USB cable: 1.8M.
- Compatible with Switch (version 3.0.0 or above), Windows, Raspberry Pi devices.
- Rumble vibration.
- Support turbo function.
Handheld or tabletop mode has no sound
- Install the latest Switch system update.
- Unplug wired headphones.
- Disconnect paired Bluetooth audio devices temporarily.
- Check the Mute when Headphones are Disconnected setting and disable it if you want the speakers to resume automatically.
- Restart the Switch.
- Raise the volume with the console’s volume buttons.
- Test another game or application.
If every application remains silent after these checks, Nintendo directs the owner to service. If only one application is silent, verify that it is the intended title and that the problem is not specific to that software.
Choose the correct fix by symptom
| Symptom | Most likely scope | First action |
|---|---|---|
| PC controller does nothing | Input mapping or Steam Input | Emulate an Xbox 360 pad, then try arrow-key and Spacebar bindings |
| PC has no music or effects | Game setting | Open F1 and enable BGM and BGS |
| Stream is black but host PC shows the game | Streaming, HDMI or receiver path | Test the host display and connect the receiver directly |
| PS4 has no image | HDMI/display chain | Change cable or port and bypass intermediary equipment |
| PS4 has no sound | Mute, output selection or HDMI chain | Select the HDMI output and test direct connection |
| Docked Switch has no speaker sound | Normal docked behavior | Use the television or dock audio output |
| Handheld Switch has no sound in every app | System setting or hardware | Update, remove headphones/Bluetooth, restart and seek service if unresolved |
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop changing game settings when the failure affects every application, persists on a direct cable connection, or remains after the platform’s required updates and restart. At that point the evidence points to the computer, streaming service, console, display, cable or audio hardware rather than an A Bird Story option.
For the PC game, keep the scope narrow: use Steam Input or keyboard emulation for controls, and use the F1 menu for BGM and BGS. For a real console, first establish that the software is actually available for that platform, then work outward from the console to the cable, display and audio equipment. This order prevents a system-level fault from being mistaken for a game bug.
