Microsoft fixed the reported applications in 2023. This is a historical disclosure, not evidence that Bing is currently vulnerable.
What was the BingBang flaw?
Wiz Research disclosed the issue, which it called “BingBang,” on March 29, 2023. It was an authorization-validation failure involving a multi-tenant Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) application—not a weakness in Bing’s search algorithm.
Multi-tenant applications can authenticate users from more than one organization. Authentication alone does not decide which tenants or users the application should allow; the application must enforce that authorization policy. In this case, Wiz says its researcher used an account in a separate tenant to sign in to Bing Trivia, a Microsoft application. The application’s content-management system (CMS) included controls for some Bing search-result carousels and homepage content.
What researchers demonstrated
Wiz changed a carousel result as proof that the CMS was accessible, demonstrated a harmless cross-site scripting (XSS) payload, and reverted the changes. The researchers also described a possible route from XSS in Bing to an Office 365 token for the signed-in user. They tested that route against their own research account and accessed that account’s data.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Wiz lists Outlook email, calendars, Teams messages, SharePoint documents, and OneDrive files among the data that could be accessible as the signed-in user. The demonstrated access was to the researchers’ test account. The possibility of attackers exposing millions of users was a potential impact scenario, not evidence that millions of accounts were breached.
Who was affected, and what was the timeline?
The reported problem concerned applications with a particular multi-tenant authorization misconfiguration; it does not mean every multi-tenant Azure application was exploitable. Wiz reported that 25% of the multi-tenant applications it scanned were vulnerable to authentication bypass. That figure applies to Wiz’s scan, not all Azure applications. A March 31, 2023 Petri report described more than 1,000 cloud-based applications and websites as potentially affected by similar misconfigurations; that is not a count of confirmed exploitable applications.

Start by checking whether each application is intended to accept users from outside its home tenant. A valid identity token does not, by itself, prove that the user or tenant is authorized to use the application. As Wiz Research put it in its March 29, 2023 disclosure, “However, users must implement additional token validation and authentication in their application’s code to ensure authentication security.”

Choose tenant access to match the application
| Configuration choice | When it fits | Where access is enforced |
|---|---|---|
| Single-tenant authentication | The app is intended only for users in its home tenant. | Restricting the app to its home tenant avoids accepting external tenants unnecessarily. |
| Multi-tenant authentication with restricted access | External access is needed, but only for defined users or organizations. | User assignment or Conditional Access may suit the policy; the app must still enforce any authorization decisions it owns. |
| Multi-tenant authentication with application-managed onboarding | The app must decide which external tenants or users to onboard. | Use claims-based authorization and explicit token checks in the application. Microsoft’s multi-tenant integration pattern sample demonstrates tenant onboarding and custom token validation. |
Review registrations and logs
- Inventory app registrations that allow multi-tenant access, then verify that each one is meant to accept external tenants. If not, configure single-tenant authentication.
- For apps that must remain multi-tenant, confirm that the intended tenant and user restrictions are actually enforced, including in application code where the app makes its own authorization decisions.
- For retrospective checks related to this type of issue, review application logs for suspicious logins. Wiz said Microsoft considered Azure AD logs alone insufficient to establish past activity for this issue.
Wiz’s original disclosure provides the incident narrative, scan result, fix timeline, and mitigation guidance: BingBang: AAD misconfiguration led to Bing.com results manipulation and account takeover.
