For Azure virtual machines, use managed disks for persistent operating-system and block-data volumes. Choose Azure Files when workloads need a managed file share, and Blob Storage for object data such as unstructured text and binary files. Then match performance, redundancy, backup, and recovery to the workload and the VM—not just to storage capacity.

Which Azure storage option fits an IaaS workload?

Option Best fit Key selection considerations
Azure managed disks Persistent VM operating-system and block-data volumes Disk tier, VM performance limits, size, caching, and LRS or ZRS configuration
Azure Files Managed file shares accessed from cloud or on-premises environments Share requirements, geography, redundancy, and storage-account configuration
Azure Blob Storage Object data, including unstructured text and binary content Object access pattern, lifecycle, scale, and data protection requirements

These services are not interchangeable. Files and blobs are not VM-attached block disks. Azure Files shares in a storage account share that account’s redundancy setting, so use separate accounts if shares have different redundancy requirements. Microsoft explains Azure Storage redundancy options, and its Azure Files introduction describes the managed share service. For Blob Storage, see Microsoft’s overview.

How to choose a managed disk type

Azure lists five managed disk types: Ultra Disk, Premium SSD v2, Premium SSD, Standard SSD, and Standard HDD. The right fit depends on workload needs and current regional and VM SKU support; check Microsoft’s managed disk comparison before implementation.

Match performance to both the workload and VM

Compare the workload’s required IOPS, throughput, and latency with the disk tier and the VM’s limits. A disk may be capable of more performance than its VM can deliver, while a disk selected by capacity alone may not meet application needs. Consider CPU, memory, storage capabilities, and any caching behavior together. Microsoft’s baseline guidance for VM storage covers those trade-offs.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Estimate peak and typical IOPS and throughput, not only disk capacity.
  • Confirm that the target VM SKU supports the disk type and can deliver the required aggregate storage performance.
  • Check whether the required disk size or provisioned performance creates paid capacity or performance the workload will not use.

Choose caching for the access pattern

Read-heavy workloads may benefit from read-only caching. For write-heavy workloads that require transactional consistency, Microsoft advises considering disabled caching. Read-write caching can risk data loss if a VM crashes and is not recommended for most data-disk scenarios. Validate the setting against the application’s consistency requirements and Microsoft’s current disk performance guidance.

Use an ephemeral OS disk only when OS persistence is unnecessary

An ephemeral OS disk stores the operating system on VM-local cache or temporary storage rather than remote persistent storage. For qualifying VM images and SKUs, Microsoft says this can remove OS disk storage cost and improve latency and deployment time. It is appropriate only when the workload tolerates loss of that VM’s OS files; do not store application state or data that must persist there. See Microsoft’s ephemeral OS disk requirements and behavior.

What LRS and ZRS protect against

Managed disks offer locally redundant storage (LRS) and zone-redundant storage (ZRS). LRS keeps replicas within one datacenter; ZRS synchronously replicates across availability zones within a region. ZRS can help maintain access through a zone outage, while LRS addresses some local hardware failures. Neither option by itself restores accidentally deleted data, defeats ransomware, or provides recovery from a regional failure.

Microsoft’s Azure Disk Storage overview states designed availability of 99.999% for managed disks, at least 99.999999999% (11 nines) LRS disk durability per year, and at least 99.9999999999% (12 nines) ZRS disk durability per year. These are Microsoft’s documented service figures, not independent test results; they are not a substitute for a workload-specific availability or recovery plan. Check the current Azure Disk Storage overview for the latest service details.

Plan backup and disaster recovery separately

Redundancy helps protect storage availability; backup and disaster recovery address recovery needs such as deletion, corruption, ransomware, and regional disruption. Microsoft recommends regular backups for IaaS workloads and storing regional disaster-recovery backups in a geographically separate location from the primary site. Select protection according to what must be restored and how quickly:

Protection option Role Important distinction
Managed disk snapshots Read-only point-in-time copies that can be used to create new managed disks A snapshot is not a full VM backup.
Azure Disk Backup Managed disk backup offering Assess its restore scope and cross-region needs for the workload.
Azure VM Backup Managed VM backup offering Consider VM-level and application-consistency requirements.
Azure Site Recovery Business continuity and workload failover Designed for recovery and failover, not as a replacement for backup.

What affects Azure IaaS storage cost?

Do not compare storage costs using capacity alone. Disk type, provisioned size and performance, redundancy, snapshots, bursting, and backup or recovery configuration can affect the bill. Snapshot charges are based on used data; incremental snapshots record changes since the preceding snapshot and can be more cost-efficient than full snapshots. Ultra Disk billing varies with capacity and provisioned IOPS and throughput. Premium SSD on-demand bursting may add an enablement fee and transaction costs. See Microsoft’s disk billing guidance.
