Microsoft’s laser-free data-center link could use substantially less power than conventional optical links, but the available evidence does not show actual data-center electricity-bill savings. The system replaces lasers with MicroLEDs and sends data through many parallel channels in imaging fiber. Microsoft reported an expected commercialization window of late 2027; that was a forecast, not confirmation that the technology is now available.
What Microsoft’s laser-free cable is
The technology, described in the peer-reviewed MOSAIC paper, is a MicroLED-based optical interconnect designed for data centers—not a consumer cable. It combines MicroLED light emitters, lenses, multicore imaging fiber and a low-power analog backend. Instead of pushing data through a small number of very fast optical channels, it uses hundreds of parallel, slower channels, an approach the paper calls “wide-and-slow.” Microsoft’s March 2026 report describes the work from its Cambridge research lab.
Imaging fiber carries the channels through many cores in a single cable. Microsoft partner research manager Paolo Costa said the fiber looks like standard fiber from the outside but contains thousands of cores, enabling parallel data paths. The design uses commercially available MicroLEDs in place of lasers.
How far and how fast the prototype went
Keep demonstrated results separate from the paper’s scale-up projections. The MOSAIC authors reported a 100-channel prototype transmitting 2 Gbps per channel over 20 meters, and 1.6 Gbps per channel over 30 meters. The paper also discusses reach up to 50 meters and aggregate throughput of 800 Gbps and beyond as scaling potential, not as the demonstrated prototype’s end-to-end result. The MOSAIC paper contains the measurements and comparison.

- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
- 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
Microsoft contrasts the design with copper links, which it says reach about two meters at high data rates, and laser-based optical links used for longer distances. In the paper’s comparison, copper offers low power and reliability but less than two meters of reach; active optical cables can reach tens of meters, with greater power use and higher failure rates. Those are comparisons made by the paper’s authors, not independent fleet-wide measurements.
What the power figures do—and do not—mean
The MOSAIC paper estimates 56–68% lower link power than mainstream optical links, depending on configuration. Microsoft’s March 2026 report describes an expectation of about 50% less energy than mainstream laser-based optical cables, based on lab tests and estimates for deployment performance. These figures concern the link technology. Neither source reports measured reductions in a customer’s total data-center electricity use or bill after deployment, so they should not be presented as a bill-savings percentage.

- Please REMOVE the end protective caps before using the cable.
- IN THE BOX: 6-foot digital optical audio Toslink cable.
- CLEAR AUDIO: Multi-channel, fiber-optic digital audio output; corrosion resistant gold-plated connectors and buffer tubing for optimal signal transfer.
- DURABLE: Lightweight, flexible cable with a rugged PVC exterior and removable rubber tips that protect the cable when not plugged in; remove before using.
- CONNECTS DEVICES: Quickly connects a sound bar, CD player, Blu-Ray player, game console, or other device to an audio system or TV.
Even if a link uses less power, the effect on a facility’s total bill would depend on how many links are deployed and on the rest of the data center’s energy use. The published estimates do not quantify that facility-wide effect.
Where the technology stands
Microsoft reported a supplier proof of concept involving MediaTek and others, and said industry-partner commercialization was expected in late 2027. That was an expectation reported in March 2026, not evidence of a launched product or confirmed present-day availability. The cited sources do not establish that customers can buy or deploy MOSAIC today.

Microsoft also discusses Hollow Core Fiber, but it is a separate, complementary technology intended for longer-distance links. Microsoft says it is already in use in some Azure regions; it is not the MicroLED cable described by MOSAIC.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to take away
MOSAIC’s potential is a combination of parallel optical channels, longer reach than copper and lower estimated link power than mainstream optical connections. Its measured prototype results are more limited than the paper’s ambitious scale-up figures, and the expected energy reduction is not a demonstrated reduction in customers’ power bills. Until commercialization and deployment results are established, the fairest description is a promising data-center interconnect research system, not a savings product.
