Microsoft’s planned Xbox mobile game store missed its July 2024 launch target and still had no announced release date as of the latest public update in April 2026. Microsoft’s reported explanation points to legal uncertainty involving Apple, but that is the company’s position—not a finding that Apple alone caused the delay. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the idea was “not dead.”
What Microsoft planned to launch
At the Bloomberg Technology Summit on May 9, 2024, then Xbox president Sarah Bond announced a browser-based mobile game store. Microsoft planned to begin with its own games and digital in-game items, then potentially open the storefront to other publishers. Bloomberg described discounts on in-game items associated with games such as Candy Crush Saga. Bloomberg’s report on the announcement described a web storefront, not a new native iOS app store.
The distinction matters: the proposal centered on selling digital mobile-game items outside an app and using them in games. It was not a confirmed plan to replace Apple’s App Store with an Xbox marketplace app.
Xbox mobile store delay: the timeline
| Date | What was reported |
|---|---|
| May 9, 2024 | Bond announced the proposed browser-based store and its initial focus on Microsoft games and digital items. |
| July 2024 | The original reported launch target. |
| Winter 2024 | A later reported target after the July plan slipped. |
| May 2025 | Microsoft filed an amicus brief in the Epic Games v. Apple dispute. Reporting on the filing said the company argued that uncertainty over the injunction and appeal made launching risky. |
| April 22, 2026 | Sharma said the idea was not dead. No replacement launch date was reported. |
| June 10, 2026 | An official Xbox strategy memo discussed mobile as an area for rebuilding platform capabilities, but gave no launch schedule for this store. |
Windows Central’s April 2026 report covered Sharma’s clarification and the lack of a new date. A separate May 2025 report described Microsoft’s legal argument; the rationale should be read as attributed reporting, not as a court’s conclusion.

Why Microsoft said Apple-related uncertainty made launch risky
In its May 2025 amicus brief, Microsoft reportedly argued that Apple’s response to the injunction and uncertainty surrounding the appeal created a risk for a launch. If Apple obtained a stay after Microsoft opened the store, Microsoft might have to suspend it while the appeal proceeded. That prospect, according to the reporting, was Microsoft’s reason for treating launch as legally risky.
This explains the company’s stated concern; it does not establish that Apple was solely responsible for the delay. The available account is reporting about Microsoft’s filing, not an adjudicated finding that Apple caused the missed dates. Nor does it show that the legal issue was the only factor affecting the project.

Is the Xbox mobile store canceled?
No cancellation has been announced in the reported updates, but there is also no confirmed launch date or public evidence establishing that the store remains in active development. On April 22, 2026, Sharma said, “mobile competition still matters and we believe the future of play should be more open,” and added that “the idea of an Xbox mobile store is not dead.” Windows Central attributed those words to her reply on social media.
Xbox’s June 10, 2026 strategy memo identifies mobile as one area for rebuilding platform capabilities, alongside hardware, PC, and streaming. It does not mention a store launch schedule or confirm the status of this particular project. The memo also cites more than 1 billion annual players and 72 billion hours of play across console, PC, mobile, and streaming, while noting that the figures exclude much of China and a few other properties. Those are broad Xbox ecosystem figures, not a forecast or audience count for the proposed store. Read Xbox’s June 2026 strategy memo.
