Microsoft Teams can handle workplace chat, video meetings, calls, and collaboration, but it is not one feature-identical product: what you get depends on whether you choose a personal, business, enterprise, or education offering and, in some cases, add separate licenses. It is a practical fit for organizations already using Microsoft services or needing meetings and messaging in one place; buyers should compare attendance limits, Microsoft 365 app needs, phone service, and premium meeting controls before choosing a plan.
What Microsoft Teams does
Teams brings together chat, channels, audio and video calls, meetings, and collaboration. Microsoft offers versions for individuals, businesses, enterprise, and education, and plan eligibility affects which features are included. Microsoft’s overview of Teams options and service description outline the different offerings.
That makes Teams less a single app with a uniform feature list than a family of services. A person who wants occasional video calls has different needs from a company that needs business email, office apps, organization-wide meeting controls, or a cloud phone system.
Messages, calls, and meeting limits
Microsoft publishes the following service limits. They are plan- and feature-dependent, not performance test results.

#1 Best Overall
- SUPPORT WORK FROM ANYWHERE WITH SYNC: Whether employees are in the office, at home, or somewhere else, Sync device management software helps everyone stay connected by letting you ensure their Logitech video collaboration personal devices are being used and up to date.
- Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
- Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
- On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
- Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.
| Feature | Published limit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Meetings | Up to 300 attendees on certain business, Teams Essentials, and A1 plans; up to 1,000 on specified enterprise and education plans | Confirm the exact plan and tenant eligibility before scheduling a large event. |
| Calls started from chat | 20 participants | This separate limit is lower than the meeting capacity. |
| Private chat | Up to 250 people | Several chat features are disabled when a chat has more than 20 participants. |
| Chat attachments | 100 MB per file; up to 10 attachments | Applies to files attached in chat. |
| Meeting recording | Four hours or 1.5 GB | When either limit is reached, the recording ends and automatically restarts. |
| Meetings and events | 30 hours | This is the published duration limit. |
These figures are from Microsoft’s Teams limits and specifications. Enterprise, education, and government feature availability can differ, so do not assume that a limit or capability listed for one plan applies to every tenant.
Which plan fits your use?
Start with the users and tasks, not the plan name. Microsoft’s US business plan comparison lists Teams Essentials as a standalone meeting option and distinguishes it from plans that include more Microsoft 365 services.
Rank #2
- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- Plug-and-Play USB Computer Headset: Simply plug the USB-A connector into your computer and you’re ready to talk or listen without the need to install software
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
- Personal communication: Look at the individual offering and verify that its features match your intended personal use; business-plan pricing and limits should not be assumed to apply.
- Small business needing meetings and chat: Teams Essentials may suit a small or medium business looking for a standalone meeting solution. Microsoft describes it as “designed for a small business in need of an affordable, professional, easy-to-use meeting solution with video and audio calling.”
- Business needing Microsoft 365 services: Compare Business Basic or other Microsoft 365 plans if you need office apps, business email, a custom email domain, or Exchange calendar integration. Microsoft’s FAQ distinguishes Essentials from Business Standard for buyers who need Office apps, a custom email domain, and Exchange calendar integration.
- Large organization, school, or government: Check the relevant enterprise, education, or government plan and tenant configuration. The business comparison alone does not establish feature eligibility for these audiences.
Pricing and add-on licensing
At the time of the reviewed US business comparison, Microsoft listed these prices with annual billing:
| Plan | Page-listed price | Billing and context |
|---|---|---|
| Teams Essentials | $4.00 per user/month | Paid yearly; standalone meeting solution for business use. |
| Microsoft 365 Business Basic | $6.00 per user/month | Paid yearly; includes a broader Microsoft 365 service bundle. |
These are page-listed US prices, not universal quotes. Microsoft says subscriptions renew automatically, and pricing and terms depend on the selected billing plan. Check current regional pricing, taxes, billing term, and included features on the business comparison page before buying.

When Teams Phone is relevant
If an organization needs a cloud phone system and calls to or from the public telephone network (PSTN), Teams Phone is a separate licensing decision. Microsoft’s reviewed US enterprise comparison listed Teams Phone Standard at $10.00 per user/month paid yearly. That page describes calling through PSTN or the internet and identifies Calling Plans, Operator Connect, and Direct Routing as PSTN options. Price, country availability, tax, and licensing prerequisites vary; check the current Teams Phone information before budgeting.
When premium meeting controls are relevant
Do not assume that meeting features such as end-to-end encryption are included in a basic Teams plan. Microsoft says the meeting organizer needs Teams Premium to enable E2EE meetings; the feature trade-offs are described below.
Rank #4
- Microsoft Teams Certified & UC Optimized: Ensure crystal-clear communication with Microsoft Teams Open Office certification and UC platform compatibility, perfect for hybrid workspaces and virtual meetings. Use of USB-A receiver required for all Microsoft Teams functionality.
- Bluetooth 5.3 & Multipoint Technology: Seamlessly switch between two devices with dual Bluetooth connections or use the USB-A receiver for plug-and-play convenience
- Advanced Noise Cancellation: Three-mic noise suppression technology blocks distractions, delivering unmatched audio clarity for professional calls or casual gaming
- Ergonomic & Lightweight Design: At only 140g, the headset features adjustable memory foam earcups and a flexible headband for extended comfort during long workdays or gaming sessions
- Unmatched Battery Life: Stay powered with up to 31 hours of talk time or 60 hours of music playback on a single charge, ensuring productivity and entertainment without interruptions
Security controls and meeting trade-offs
Baseline encryption and end-to-end encryption are not the same thing. Microsoft says Teams uses multiple layers of encryption for data at rest and in transit, and its security guide describes media encryption using SRTP. Those protections describe the service baseline; they do not mean every meeting is end-to-end encrypted.
For E2EE meetings, Microsoft says the organizer needs Teams Premium. When E2EE is enabled, meeting recording and live captions are unavailable. This can make E2EE unsuitable for meetings where participants need a recording or captions. Consult Microsoft’s Teams security guide and meeting end-to-end encryption guidance to check configuration and feature eligibility.

- Convenient call controls, including mute, volume, and the Teams button, are in-line and easy to reach.
Audio equipment and room setups
A headset is optional, not a Teams requirement. For calls from a home office or shared workspace, compare a “Microsoft Teams headset” by device compatibility, connection method, microphone performance, and comfort for the setting. The official product pages reviewed do not recommend or certify a particular headset model, so check compatibility with your device and operating system rather than treating a product label as an endorsement.
Organizations equipping meeting rooms can also review Microsoft’s Teams Rooms certified devices through its Teams devices information. Room hardware is a separate deployment choice from an individual user’s call setup.
What this review can and cannot establish
Microsoft’s documentation establishes the plan structure, published limits, licensing context, and described security controls. It does not establish independent comparative call quality, real-world reliability, or ease of use; those depend on network conditions, device setup, tenant configuration, and the experience being evaluated. Microsoft’s September 22, 2025 announcement says the company was named a Leader in the 2025 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Unified Communications as a Service for the seventh year in a row. That is Microsoft’s account of Gartner’s recognition, not an independent test of Teams call quality or user experience.
