Its story runs from an Altair BASIC interpreter in 1975 to Windows, Office, Xbox, cloud services and today’s AI ambitions. The key change was not just what Microsoft made: it was how the company connected its software and services to individuals, developers and businesses.
What was Microsoft’s first product?
Microsoft was founded in 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. The company’s first product was an interpreter for the BASIC programming language, created for the Altair 8800 computer. In his anniversary remarks, chairman and CEO Satya Nadella described the founders’ idea as building technology that would let people everywhere build more technology. Microsoft’s own anniversary history presents this beginning as the start of a developer-tools company.

That origin helps explain the company’s later emphasis on platforms: tools and systems that other people can use to make software, rather than only products consumed directly by end users. It is Microsoft’s own retrospective framing, not a claim that the company alone created the personal-computing industry.
How did Microsoft become a major PC software company?
In the 1980s and 1990s, Microsoft moved from developer tools toward software used directly by PC owners and organizations. The company’s anniversary gallery identifies several milestones in that shift:

#1 Best Overall
- March 13, 1986: Microsoft went public.
- June 19, 1989: The first version of Microsoft Office reached the market, according to the company’s gallery.
- Spring 1990: Windows 3.0 arrived.
- August 24, 1995: Bill Gates announced Windows 95.
- October 25, 2001: Windows XP went on sale.
Windows gave Microsoft a central role in the PC operating-system layer, while Office became a major suite of productivity applications. Those products made the company part of both everyday personal computing and business work. The milestone dates above come from Microsoft’s selected anniversary milestones; they show the company’s chronology, not a complete account of the broader PC industry.
Why did Microsoft move beyond Windows and Office?
By the early 2000s, Microsoft was extending its business into new ways of reaching users. Xbox marked an entry into the console market, while Azure represented a later shift toward delivering computing infrastructure as a service. These moves changed Microsoft’s relationship with customers: from selling primarily software for a PC to operating platforms and services used across devices and by developers and businesses.
Xbox brought Microsoft into console gaming
The original Xbox went on sale on November 15, 2001. It was Microsoft’s entry into console gaming, not the invention of gaming or the console business. The company’s anniversary page records the launch date, and Microsoft’s milestone gallery situates it alongside the company’s software history.
Azure began Microsoft’s cloud-services expansion
Microsoft announced Windows Azure in October 2008. The move extended its platform ambitions beyond software installed on a customer’s computer: cloud services let Microsoft provide computing capabilities over the internet. Cloud computing was an industry-wide development; Microsoft’s milestone is its own entry and subsequent expansion in that market.

Surface added Microsoft-designed hardware
The first in-house-designed Surface PC was released on October 26, 2012, according to the company’s anniversary gallery. Surface gave Microsoft a direct hardware presence alongside its role as a software and platform provider.
How did Microsoft’s leadership and mission evolve?
Microsoft identifies Steve Ballmer as its second CEO, appointed on January 13, 2000, and dates Satya Nadella’s transition to the role to February 2014. The company says its mission wording evolved under Nadella in 2015 to “to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.”
At the 50th anniversary, Nadella described the company’s evolution this way: “Our mission has not changed, it’s only expanded.” He also said, “Our future will not be defined by what we have built, but what we empower others to build.” Both statements are leadership’s description of Microsoft’s direction, rather than independent measures of its impact. Microsoft’s current strategic emphasis includes AI, with Copilot and developer agents among the products and capabilities Nadella highlighted in his anniversary remarks. This continues the company’s platform logic: build tools and services that people and organizations can use in their own work and software development. These are ambitions and product directions, not proof that promised benefits have already been realized.

Microsoft’s FY2025 annual report offers a snapshot of the scale and mix of its business. The fiscal year ended June 30, 2025. The figures below are company-reported year-over-year changes for that fiscal year, not measures of social or technological impact.
| Business area | Microsoft-reported FY2025 result |
|---|---|
| Microsoft Cloud revenue | Increased 23% to $168.9 billion |
| Microsoft 365 Commercial products and cloud services revenue | Increased 14% |
| Server products and cloud services revenue | Increased 23% |
| Windows OEM and Devices revenue | Increased 3% |
| Xbox content and services revenue | Increased 16% |
These results show that Microsoft’s present business spans cloud infrastructure, productivity software, Windows-related sales and gaming services. They do not establish how much the company changed society over its first 50 years; no independently sourced 50-year impact measure is established here. The figures are from Microsoft’s FY2025 annual report.
What do Microsoft’s 50 years add up to?
The company’s history is a sequence of shifts in its role: developer-tools maker, PC software company, operating-system and productivity platform provider, gaming entrant, cloud-services operator, and now an AI-focused platform company. Windows and Office brought Microsoft into daily computing at scale; Xbox, Azure and Surface widened how it reached users and organizations. Its next chapter depends on whether AI tools and services deliver practical value to the people and developers the company says it aims to empower.
