Changing Edge’s default search engine away from Bing is a preference, not a PC fault established by Microsoft’s repair guidance. A 2024 report said Microsoft PC Manager’s Repair Tips recommended resetting Edge’s start page and search engine to Bing; Microsoft’s published PC Manager guidance does not document that recommendation or say another search provider harms Windows.
Why is PC Manager telling you to switch back to Bing?
In a report published on May 16, 2024, The Register said that users who changed Edge’s default search engine saw a Repair Tips notification recommending that they “reset start page to new tab page and search engine to Bing.” That is a report of the app’s behavior at the time—not evidence that changing the search provider causes a PC problem.
Microsoft describes PC Manager as a utility for cleaning storage, managing startup apps, and optimizing system performance on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its PC Manager guidance does not describe the Bing prompt. The available sources therefore do not establish whether current versions still show it, or whether accepting it automatically changes Edge settings.
Does choosing another search engine need to be fixed?
Microsoft’s published PC Manager guidance covers storage cleanup, startup management, and performance optimization; it does not identify a non-Bing search engine as a fault. There is no Microsoft-documented repair need in these sources for restoring Bing simply because you selected another provider.

Microsoft does describe benefits of Bing in Edge: “Keeping Bing as your default search engine provides an enhanced search experience in the new Microsoft Edge, including direct links to Windows apps, relevant suggestions from your organization if you’re signed in with a work or school account, and instant answers to questions about Windows.” That is Microsoft’s explanation of its product integration, not evidence that Bing is required for a PC to work properly.
How to change Edge’s default search engine
For a supported provider, Microsoft’s Edge instructions use these steps:
Rank #2
- Google search engine.
- In Edge, search the web using the provider you want to use. This can add a site that supports OpenSearch.
- Open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search.
- Select your preferred provider in the search-engine setting.
This changes Edge’s address-bar search provider. Your homepage or new-tab page is a separate setting, so changing the search engine does not necessarily change which page opens at startup.
Edge search and Windows Search are different
Changing Edge’s address-bar provider does not make Windows Search use that provider for web results. Microsoft says Windows Search work and web results are powered by Bing and links open in Edge. Apps and widgets that depend on Edge use its engine, settings, extensions, and features.
Windows’ default-browser setting is also separate from Edge’s search-engine setting. Microsoft’s default-app instructions address which apps open links and file types; they do not choose the search provider used in Edge’s address bar.
Check whether S mode or an organization manages the device
Windows 10 and Windows 11 in S mode are a specific exception: Microsoft says Edge is always the default browser and Bing is the default search engine. Installing browsers from outside Microsoft Store requires permanently switching out of S mode, and that switch cannot be reversed. This restriction does not apply to every Windows installation.
On a work or school device, organizational policy may also constrain available settings. If Edge does not let you select a provider, check whether the device is in S mode or managed by your organization before treating the restriction as a PC Manager repair issue.

Bing may suit you if you value the Microsoft integrations the company describes, such as Windows app links or work-account suggestions. You can also choose another supported provider if you prefer its results or settings. Microsoft’s privacy statement says that when you search with Bing, it collects search terms and information such as your IP address and location, cookie identifiers, the time and date of the search, and browser configuration. Signed-in Bing users can review activity on Microsoft’s privacy dashboard. This disclosure describes Bing searches; it does not establish that PC Manager’s recommendation itself collects that data.
