The subscription owner can share benefits with up to five others; each person gets their own account and, under the sharing terms described by Microsoft, 1 TB of personal OneDrive storage and desktop Office apps. It is not one shared account or a pool of private files.
What Microsoft 365 Family includes
Microsoft describes the plan as including productivity apps, online protection, and cloud storage. Its US plan page says the subscription supports up to six people, with each person able to use it on up to five devices at once. Apps are available for PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Android, but features vary by platform. Microsoft’s US plan page lists these specifications.

Microsoft’s US Store listing describes it as “a subscription for one to six people that includes advanced security, cloud storage, and innovative apps with Microsoft Copilot.” That description does not mean every feature is shared equally: Microsoft’s sharing guidance says AI features and extended storage in the described arrangement are available only to the subscription owner.
How many people and how much storage?
The owner can share the subscription with up to five other people, for six users total. The plan advertises up to 6 TB of storage overall, allocated as 1 TB per person—not as a single shared 6 TB drive. Each person uses their own Microsoft account and personal OneDrive storage. These are plan specifications on Microsoft’s US page; actual availability can depend on the account and applicable terms. Microsoft’s plan details and subscription-sharing FAQs explain the allocation.

How subscription sharing works
- The owner sends an invitation to share the subscription.
- The invited person accepts and joins the owner’s Microsoft family group. Microsoft’s invitation guidance explains the steps and benefits: Someone invited you to share their Microsoft 365 subscription.
- The accepted member uses their own Microsoft account to access their benefits, including 1 TB of personal OneDrive storage and desktop apps such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
A person who receives a shared subscription cannot share that subscription onward. Microsoft also distinguishes the owner’s benefits from those of invited members: its sharing guidance says AI features and extended storage are limited to the owner in the arrangement it describes. Check the current feature terms if a particular Copilot or storage feature is the reason you are choosing the plan. Microsoft’s sharing-management guidance covers owner controls.
Are family members’ files private?
Yes. Microsoft says members’ personal files, email, appointments, contacts, photos, and notebooks remain private unless a member explicitly shares them. Being in the same Microsoft family group does not itself grant access to another person’s private content. Shared family resources—such as a Family inbox, calendar, or OneNote—may be visible depending on what has been shared. See Microsoft’s sharing FAQs for its privacy explanation.

What happens if sharing ends or the subscription expires?
If the owner stops sharing or the subscription expires, the member loses subscription benefits, including the extra 1 TB of OneDrive storage and full desktop Office app functionality. Microsoft says the member’s files remain intact and storage reverts to its previous allowance. Desktop Office documents can still be viewed and printed, but the apps no longer allow editing or creating new documents after benefits expire. Stopping subscription sharing does not automatically remove the person from the Microsoft family group. Microsoft explains these outcomes in its sharing FAQs.
