Hang up or stop replying; do not pay, click links, or share personal or banking information. Verify any real issue by contacting the agency through details you find independently on its official website or on your official card.
Some agency calls can be legitimate—for example, a callback you requested or contact about an existing application or record. That does not authenticate an unexpected call or its caller ID. A surprising demand for immediate payment is a reason to end the contact and verify independently.
What Social Security and Medicare scams look like
Scammers impersonate government agencies to make a demand seem official. A common pattern is to claim there is a problem or prize, create pressure to act immediately, then dictate how to pay. They may spoof a phone number, use a real employee’s name, or send a fake badge image, letter, or social-media profile. None of those proves who contacted you.
- Social Security threats: A caller says your Social Security number or benefits will be suspended, you will be arrested, or you must pay to avoid legal trouble.
- “Protected account” instructions: Someone tells you to withdraw or transfer money to keep it safe, or arranges to collect cash or precious metals in person.
- Payment demands: The caller asks for gift cards, cryptocurrency, prepaid debit cards, cash, or a wire transfer. These are strong scam signals, and SSA says it does not demand these payment methods or threaten arrest to force immediate payment. SSA’s scam guidance explains the warning signs.
- Medicare number pitches: A caller, email, or visitor asks for your Medicare number to issue a supposedly new card or offers money, gifts, free care, or medical equipment in exchange for it.
- Fake transfer: On July 29, 2026, SSA’s Office of the Inspector General warned that a company or another agency cannot transfer a call directly to SSA or OIG. A caller claiming to do that is a scammer. Read the SSA OIG alert.
SSA says it will not suspend your Social Security number. It also says it will not ask for sensitive or personal information through social media, email, or text message. A message claiming that you must pay to receive a cost-of-living adjustment or benefit increase is not proof of a legitimate agency action.

How to tell whether an agency contact may be legitimate
Do not decide based on caller ID, a badge, a name, or an official-looking document: scammers can imitate or spoof them. Instead, consider the contact’s context and request, then verify through an independently obtained official channel.
Social Security calls
SSA employees may call in some business situations, such as after you recently applied for benefits, when an existing recipient’s record needs an update, or when you requested a phone call. SSA says it typically mails a letter about problems with an SSN or record. A call can fit a legitimate situation and still should not be trusted automatically—particularly if it brings threats or an unusual payment demand. SSA explains how to handle calls from people claiming to be employees.

Medicare calls
Medicare guidance describes limited circumstances for calls, including a return call you requested, certain plan-related calls, follow-up from an agent who helped you enroll, or contact after you reported suspected fraud. A Medicare-related caller’s claim that your card must be replaced does not, by itself, establish that the call is genuine. Medicare’s fraud guidance describes how to protect your information and report concerns.
Your Medicare card has a unique Medicare number, not your Social Security number. Medicare advises protecting that number as carefully as a credit card. Share it only with appropriate providers, plans, or trusted people who need it for Medicare-related work—not with an unsolicited caller, emailer, or visitor.

What to do during a suspicious call, message, or visit
- Pause. Urgency and fear can make a demand feel real. Take time to think and, if useful, talk to someone you trust.
- End the contact. Hang up, stop replying, or close the message. Do not accept a transfer to another supposed agency representative.
- Do not act on the demand. Do not pay, disclose personal or banking details, move money, click links, or open attachments.
- Verify independently. Navigate to SSA.gov or Medicare.gov yourself, or call a number printed on an official agency card or material. Do not use contact details supplied by the suspicious caller or message.
- Report the attempt. Use the Social Security or Medicare reporting route below, and consider reporting a government-impersonation scam to the FTC.
Where to report Social Security or Medicare scams
| Concern | Reporting route |
|---|---|
| Social Security or SSI fraud or scam | SSA Office of the Inspector General: online reporting, or 1-800-269-0271 (TTY 1-866-501-2101), Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Eastern, excluding federal holidays. SSA’s reporting FAQ lists these options. |
| Suspected Medicare fraud or a questionable Medicare claim | Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or the HHS OIG hotline at 1-800-447-8477 (1-800-HHS-TIPS); online tips are accepted at tips.oig.hhs.gov. People in Medicare Advantage or a Medicare drug plan can also contact I-MEDIC at 1-877-772-3379. Medicare lists its reporting options. |
| Government impersonation or consumer scam | Report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC’s reported losses for 2025 covered government-impersonation scams overall, not only Social Security or Medicare scams. The FTC’s September 25, 2026 post describes that reporting data. |
If you are reporting a Medicare claim, gather the service or item, date, amount Medicare approved and paid, the Medicare Summary Notice or claim date, and why the payment seems wrong. For a concern not tied to one claim, note what happened, where and when, and any supporting evidence. Do not delay urgent account protection while collecting details.
