Plant native milkweed for monarch caterpillars and a succession of native nectar flowers for adult butterflies. The right species depend on where you live and your garden’s sun, soil, and moisture, so use a regional plant list rather than treating any nationwide seed mix as suitable everywhere.

Choose plants for both monarch life stages

Milkweed is the host plant monarch caterpillars need: larvae feed on milkweed leaves. Adult monarchs drink nectar from milkweed flowers and many other flowers, so a useful planting pairs milkweed with nectar-producing plants.

Monarch Joint Venture summarizes the mix this way: “The best habitat for monarchs contains a variety of native milkweed as well as nectar plants.” Its habitat FAQ also explains the complementary roles of these plants. Aim for flowers that bloom successively or overlap through the period monarchs are present locally, not a single short-lived burst.

Start with plants native to your area

There is no single best list for every garden. Native ranges, bloom times, mature size, and water needs vary by species and region. Xerces Society’s Monarch Nectar Plant Guides are organized by region and draw on nectaring observations alongside plant range, bloom timing, availability, and garden suitability. The project says its evidence base collated nearly 24,000 observations across 358 native plant species and divided the information into 15 regions; that is a guide-project evidence base, not a current population survey or a claim that every listed plant fits every site.

Xerces’ location tool helps identify native host and nectar plants and filter options by site and aesthetic attributes. It also links plants to nearby or online suppliers. Confirm that a suggested species suits your county and growing conditions before buying.

Regional examples to use as a starting point

These examples come from specific regional guides, not a universal planting recipe. Check each plant’s local range and site requirements before selecting it.

Mid-Atlantic and Northeast

Xerces’ guides for these regions include butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), common milkweed (A. syriaca), and swamp milkweed (A. incarnata) as milkweed options. Nectar-flower examples include wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), narrow-leaved mountain mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium), New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), goldenrods (Solidago spp.), and Joe-Pye weeds (Eutrochium spp.). The regional tables distinguish plants by features such as height, moisture needs, and bloom window; use those details to match species to your site.

Florida

The Florida guide includes aquatic milkweed (Asclepias perennis), butterfly milkweed, and swamp milkweed, plus nectar plants such as blue mistflower (Conoclinium coelestinum), spiked blazing star (Liatris spicata), narrow-leaved sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius), and seaside goldenrod (Solidago sempervirens). Florida’s monarch season is longer than in northern regions, so do not transplant this list wholesale to another state.

Match plant choices to your garden

  • Native range: Check that the plant is native to your location, not merely native somewhere in the United States.
  • Host or nectar role: Include milkweed for caterpillars and flowering nectar plants for adults; nectar flowers alone do not replace the host plant.
  • Bloom timing: Choose a mix with successive or overlapping bloom during your local monarch season.
  • Sun and moisture: Match each plant’s needs to the actual conditions in your garden. Xerces’ regional guides recommend sunny sites and provide growing-condition details.
  • Size and spread: Check mature height and growth habits so the planting fits its location and neighboring plants.
  • Provenance and availability: Prefer regionally sourced native seed or plants when possible, and ask suppliers about pesticide treatment.

When local milkweed is hard to find

Locally appropriate milkweed can be difficult to buy. Xerces’ Milkweed FAQs says fewer than 20 of more than 70 milkweed species native to the United States are typically commercially available, with supplies scarce in several regions. If you cannot find milkweed native to your area, Xerces recommends planting native nectar wildflowers to feed adult monarchs rather than substituting non-native milkweed as though it were locally native.

Ask about pesticides and avoid tropical milkweed

Ask a nursery whether its plants have received systemic insecticide treatments, and avoid applying pesticides in or near monarch habitat. A plant intended to support wildlife can be undermined by pesticide exposure, so supplier practices are part of the planting decision.

Xerces’ regional guides caution against tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica), which is non-native in the United States and can persist year-round in mild climates. The guides say it may foster higher loads of the monarch parasite Ophryocystis elektroscirrha; this is a stated risk, not evidence that every tropical milkweed plant causes disease.

Why regional choices matter

Xerces Society reports an over-80% decline in monarch butterfly populations in recent decades. Its cited page does not specify the measurement year or metric behind that figure, so it should not be read as a precisely dated estimate. Planting habitat is one way to provide food and host plants, but choosing locally suitable species is essential to making that habitat relevant to your area.
