Eight library-injection vulnerabilities disclosed by Cisco Talos affected Microsoft apps for macOS, including Outlook, Office apps, and Teams for work or school. The documented attack requires a malicious app to already be running on the Mac; it is not an attack triggered simply by opening an email or visiting a website. Update your Microsoft apps and review the macOS permissions they have been granted.
How the attacks work—and what they do not mean
In reports published August 19, 2024, Cisco Talos described vulnerabilities that could let a malicious app running locally load a specially crafted library into a vulnerable Microsoft app or helper process. The attacker could then try to use capabilities associated with that Microsoft process. Talos’s Outlook report describes the attack path and potential impact: TALOS-2024-1972.
This is local code injection, not evidence that a remote attacker can compromise a Mac merely by sending an email or hosting a website. The malicious app must already be running on the device, and the reports do not say that all Mac users were affected in practice.
Why macOS permissions matter
Talos discusses the entitlement com.apple.security.cs.disable-library-validation in examined app builds. In those builds, it allowed unsigned libraries to be loaded. If the targeted Microsoft app already had permission to access a sensitive capability, injected code might be able to act through that app without a new prompt. If permission had not been granted, the app could show a prompt that might mislead a user into approving access. The exact implications depend on the app and the permissions involved; this does not establish that every listed capability was exploitable in every app.

Potential consequences described by Talos include access to sensitive data or use of app-associated capabilities such as camera, microphone, photos, file access, or sending email. These are possible outcomes under the documented conditions, not a report of observed attacks or proof that every affected app could use every capability.
Which Microsoft apps and components were listed?
Talos published eight reports covering these macOS apps and components. The reports date from August 19, 2024; the versions they examined are historical examples, not a current inventory of affected or fixed versions.

The UAE Cyber Security Council’s September 4, 2024 advisory also lists Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, and Word, and recommends updating the apps and reviewing their macOS permissions: “Multiple Vulnerabilities in Microsoft macOS Applications”.
What Mac users should do
- Install current Microsoft app updates. Update Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote through the update method used for your installation. If your Mac is managed by an employer or school, ask the administrator to confirm that it receives current Microsoft app updates.
- Review the permissions granted to Microsoft apps. In macOS privacy settings, check whether each app still needs access to sensitive capabilities such as the camera, microphone, photos, or files. Remove access that is no longer necessary. Settings labels and locations can vary by macOS version, so use the privacy controls for the version installed on your Mac.
- Do not treat permission review as a substitute for patching. Restricting unnecessary access can reduce what an app may do, but updating addresses the vulnerable software itself.
Talos gives specific historical fix examples for two issues: OneNote was fixed in version 16.86 (24060916), with a patch release date of June 11, 2024, and the Teams modulehost helper in version 24124.1412.2911.3341, with a patch date of June 7, 2024. These dated examples are not a complete version matrix and should not be used as the current version baseline; install the latest updates available for your apps.

Severity scores and what is not known
Talos reports CVSS v3.1 scores of 7.1 for the examples examined. A CVSS score is an assessment of vulnerability severity, not a count of victims or evidence that exploitation occurred. The cited reports and the UAE advisory provide no population-level incident count, number of affected users, or named study of real-world exploitation.
There is also a record-level difference in the scoring details for Outlook’s CVE-2024-42220. Talos describes a local attack vector in its report, while the National Vulnerability Database record later shows both a Talos-attributed local vector and a different vector added in NIST analysis: NVD: CVE-2024-42220. For the attack conditions described here, Talos’s technical report is the basis for explaining the required local malicious app.
