Measure both feet, use the size chart for the specific brand and country, then judge the shoe on your feet. The best fit leaves room in front of your longest toe while holding your heel and midfoot securely, without squeezing or letting your forefoot slide. A size chart is a starting point—not a substitute for trying the model with your usual running socks.
Start with both feet and the right size chart
Measure the length and width of both feet, then use the longer foot as your starting point if they differ. Check the chart for the brand and country where you are buying: sizing conversions and measurement instructions vary, and a brand’s chart may not predict how a particular model feels.
ASICS Singapore illustrates a method that adds 1.5 cm to the foot measurement. Treat that as guidance for that brand and regional resource, not a universal allowance for every running shoe. Use the chosen shoe brand’s own chart and follow its measurement instructions: ASICS Singapore size guide.
Check the shoe on your foot
Try the shoe with the socks you normally run in. Brooks recommends trying shoes later in the day, when feet may be larger than earlier, and assessing the fit in the actual shoe rather than relying on a chart alone: Brooks UK fit guidance.

Leave room for your longest toe
Stand in the shoe and check the space between your longest toe and the front. Brooks suggests approximately 1/2 to 1 inch; Nike Canada describes roughly a thumb’s width. These are practical brand recommendations, not a standardized measurement or guarantee of a good fit. Check Nike’s regional guidance here: Nike Canada fit guidance.
Keep the heel and midfoot secure
Your heel and midfoot should feel held in place, while the forefoot has room to spread without being squeezed. ASICS describes a snugger heel with a roomier forefoot in its fit advice. A shoe that feels secure in the back but pinches at the toes is not a good fit: ASICS UK fit guidance and ASICS UK shoe guidance.

Choose width separately from length
If the forefoot binds, try a wider width or a different shoe shape before increasing the length. Going longer may add toe room, but it can also leave the heel or midfoot insecure. Width labels and availability vary by brand and model; Brooks describes narrow, medium, wide and extra-wide options in its range, but those labels are not identical across brands. See Brooks UK width guidance.
