If you mainly want local broadcast stations, an HDTV antenna is a separate option—but it does not provide internet streaming channels.
Choose the option that matches what you want to watch
| Option | What you get | What you need | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| External streaming player | Access to streaming apps and their free live or on-demand content | A compatible TV input, power, home internet, and apps supported by the player | Watching internet-delivered channels or shows on a TV without built-in smart features |
| Free streaming apps | Free live or on-demand programming, commonly supported by advertising | A supported TV platform or streaming player, an installed app, and internet | Viewers who already have a compatible device |
| HDTV antenna | Local over-the-air broadcast stations that can be received at your location | An antenna, coaxial connection, and a TV with a tuner | Viewers prioritizing local broadcast stations rather than internet channels |
Check the TV’s inputs and the streaming player’s requirements before buying: a player only works when the television has a compatible connection. Channel availability also depends on the service and, for antenna reception, your location and antenna placement.
Use a streaming player for internet channels
A streaming player adds app access to a compatible TV that does not have smart features built in. Connect the player to the TV and power, select the input it uses, connect it to your home internet, and install the services you want from its app store. Roku’s setup guidance covers choosing the correct TV input for its player: Roku player setup and TV input selection.
Free apps vary by device and location. Google’s Android TV Help identifies Haystack News, Plex, Pluto TV, and Tubi as providers of free live channels, and notes that their apps need to be installed: Google’s guide to watching live TV on Android TV. Tubi lists Roku and Amazon Fire TV among supported media-device families: Tubi supported devices.

Know what “free” includes
Free streaming usually means watching advertising rather than paying a subscription for that service. It does not guarantee that every channel or program shown in a platform’s listings is free. Roku says The Roku Channel offers 500+ free live TV channels, but this is Roku’s advertised count, and Roku notes that some listed channels may require subscriptions. Channel lineups and counts can change. Roku’s The Roku Channel page.
Tubi describes its service as available without a subscription and lists viewing through its website and supported platforms: Tubi. Check the particular channel or program’s terms in the app before assuming it is included at no charge.

Use an HDTV antenna for local broadcast stations
An antenna receives over-the-air broadcasts; it is not a way to access Pluto TV, Tubi, or other internet streaming channels. Connect the antenna’s coaxial cable to the TV’s antenna input, then use the television’s channel-scan function to find stations. Reception and the stations found depend on your location and antenna position. Roku’s support instructions suggest trying a higher position or a spot near a window in the setup context it documents: Roku antenna and Live TV setup guidance.
Roku’s instructions also state that Roku TV Live TV setup and features require internet; that qualification applies to Roku TV’s setup context, not to antenna reception in general. Verify your TV’s tuner and antenna connection before relying on it.

Check compatibility before you set up
- Identify the TV’s available connections. Check the make and model and inspect the ports. Confirm that the streaming player you are considering supports a connection the TV has.
- Connect the player and select its input. Attach it to the compatible TV input, supply power, and use the TV remote’s input/source control to select that connection.
- Connect to home internet. Follow the player’s on-screen network setup. Internet is required for internet streaming apps.
- Install a free service. Open the device’s app store, find an app supported on that device, and install it. Service availability can vary by platform and region.
- For local stations, connect and scan an antenna instead. Attach the coaxial cable to the TV’s antenna input and run a channel scan; adjust the antenna if reception is limited.
Set expectations before choosing
- For internet channels and on-demand libraries: use a compatible streaming player and supported apps; expect ads on free services.
- For local broadcasts: use an antenna and check reception at your address; the available stations are not guaranteed by the antenna alone.
- For a service’s channel count: treat the platform’s own figure as its claim, not an independent comparison, and confirm current listings in the app.
- For compatibility: verify the exact TV inputs and device requirements rather than assuming every older television can connect to every player.
