For current PlayStation console exclusives, choose a PS5-family console. The standard PS5 is the direct route to PS5 games; choose a disc-equipped model if you own or want physical games, and consider PS5 Pro if you want enhanced visuals or performance in games that specifically support its features. Pro is not required to play PS5 titles. Before buying, check that each must-play game is available on PlayStation console and whether it has Pro enhancements.
Which PlayStation should I buy for exclusives?
For access to current PS5 console exclusives, the choice is among the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro. Sony’s product pages describe PS5 games and the current PS5 lineup, but they do not establish a complete, permanent list of games exclusive to PlayStation consoles. Check the current platform listing for every game that matters to you, including whether a PC or other-platform release has been announced.

Capacities and drive compatibility above are from Sony’s US buying page and apply to the configurations it lists; check the current local product listing for the exact model, capacity, drive compatibility, price, and bundle. An optional drive requires internet access to pair during setup. Compare the total local cost, including a required drive if you need disc playback, rather than assuming one model is always the better value.
Do I need a disc version?
Choose a disc-equipped PS5 if you have physical PS5 or PS4 games, or want the option to buy and play games on disc. Sony says PS4 game discs cannot be used with PS5 Digital Edition. Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive, so buying a digital copy is not the same as using a disc you already own.

Sony lists an optional removable disc drive for specific slim Digital Edition model groups and PS5 Pro. Do not assume it fits every Digital Edition: confirm the exact console model group and compatible drive on Sony’s current product information before purchasing. If you use a PS4 game disc on a compatible PS5, keep the disc inserted while playing.
Is PS5 Pro worth it for exclusives?
PS5 Pro plays PS5 games, but its extra visual and performance features are game-dependent. Sony identifies PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), advanced ray tracing, and the possibility of higher or more consistent frame rates in supported titles. Sony also says Pro features are available only in select enhanced games and vary by game. Check whether your preferred titles are listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced before paying for the upgrade.

For example, Insomniac Games’ Core Technology Director Mike Fitzgerald described new PS5 Pro modes for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, including a Performance Pro mode combining the game’s crisp 4K resolution and ray-tracing features with 60 frames per second. That is a statement about a named game and mode, not a general performance guarantee for other titles.
Sony’s PS5 product page states compatibility with over 8,500 PS4 games, while its support page says the overwhelming majority of 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5. Those are Sony’s published figures on different pages; they do not mean every game works identically or that Pro is needed for backward compatibility.

Can I play my PS4 games on PS5?
Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. Compatibility is extensive, but not absolute: Sony lists exceptions and warns that some games may have missing functions or unexpected behavior. Check the specific title in Sony’s compatibility information before buying a console if it is important to you.

- Physical PS4 games: You need a disc-equipped PS5 or a supported optional drive. PS4 game discs do not work on PS5 Digital Edition without a compatible drive.
- Digital PS4 games: Check the title’s compatibility and use the PlayStation account associated with the purchase.
- PS3 games: PS5 does not support PS3 discs. Do not buy a PS5 expecting to play a PS3 disc collection.
- Store listings: Sony uses a “PS4 only” label for games that cannot run on PS5.
How to choose for your own game list
- Check each must-play game’s platform. Confirm it is available on PlayStation console and review current release information; do not rely on a broad claim that every PlayStation Studios game is console-exclusive.
- Sort your library by format. List PS5 and PS4 discs you own or expect to buy. If you need them, choose a disc-equipped PS5 or verify that Sony supports an optional drive for your exact Digital Edition or Pro model group.
- Look up PS4 compatibility title by title. Use Sony’s compatibility guidance, especially for games you plan to play from disc, and note any limitations.
- Check Pro enhancement status for the games you care about. Buy Pro for the supported presentation improvements you value, not because it unlocks the PS5 library.
- Compare current local totals. Check local pricing, stock, bundles, and the cost of any optional disc drive. Sony’s buying page is US-specific, so its configurations or notices should not be treated as local pricing guidance.
