A cardigan or pullover should match the silhouette you want, leave room for the layer you plan to wear, and let you move comfortably. Check its measurements and construction rather than relying on a size label alone; for a cardigan, assess how it fits both open and closed if you wear it both ways.
Start with the silhouette you want
Decide whether you want a relaxed, standard, tailored, or deliberately oversized look. Fit labels are not universal: for example, Peter Millar describes its own Classic sweater fit as more relaxed through the sleeve, shoulder, chest, and waist, with a slightly longer body, and its Tailored fit as trimmer through those areas and slightly shorter. Treat those terms as descriptions of that brand’s categories, not as sizing standards shared across brands.
Ease is the difference between your body measurement and the garment measurement. Positive ease means the garment is larger than the body; negative ease means it is smaller. How much ease feels right depends on the look, the knit, and the intended layers. Pattern-making guidance, including Lion Brand’s ease categories, is useful context but should not be treated as a universal shopping rule.
Check the fit over the layer you will wear
Try the sweater over its intended layer: a thin base layer takes up less room than a shirt or thicker layer. Check it standing and moving, and look for tugging or restriction when you reach and bend. A fit guide from Berroco recommends measuring over a thin base layer; for shopping, the practical point is to judge the garment over the layer you actually expect to wear.

For a cardigan, button it if that is how you will wear it. The fronts should meet without strained buttons or pulling across the chest or body. If you often wear it open, check that it hangs the way you want rather than falling awkwardly or feeling too loose.
Assess shoulders, sleeves, and movement
Read the shoulder line according to the garment’s construction. A set-in sleeve has a shoulder seam whose position you can assess; a raglan has a diagonal seam, while a dropped shoulder is designed to sit farther down the arm. These constructions create different silhouettes, so do not apply a set-in-sleeve shoulder rule to every sweater. Look for the intended shape and make sure the armholes and sleeves allow comfortable movement.

With your arms relaxed, check sleeve length and shape. Consider where the cuffs sit and whether the sleeves bunch excessively or feel restrictive when you move. The preferred length varies with style and personal preference.
Compare garment measurements with a sweater you like
When choosing a size online, use the product’s own chart and its measurement definitions. Body measurements describe the wearer; finished-garment measurements describe the item itself. For a useful comparison, measure a sweater that already fits the way you want and compare its chest or bust, sleeve, and body length with the product’s stated dimensions.

Product sheets can define measurements differently, so check how each value is taken. SanMar’s sheet for a particular Port Authority cardigan, for example, gives body length, bust, and sleeve dimensions and explains how those measurements are taken. Its figures apply to that product and its listed sizes, not to cardigans generally. Likewise, do not assume that two brands’ “medium” sizes or fit names are equivalent.

There is no single ideal hem position for every cardigan or pullover. Consider your proportions, the layer underneath, and how you want to style the garment. For an online purchase, use the actual product’s body-length measurement and compare it with a sweater you already wear comfortably.

A quick fit check
- Choose the silhouette you want, without assuming a fit label means the same thing across brands.
- Try the intended underlayer and check for comfortable movement.
- Assess the shoulder and sleeve in light of the garment’s construction.
- Check chest and body ease against a sweater you like.
- For a cardigan, test both closure and open drape if you expect to wear it both ways.
- For online shopping, compare the product’s finished measurements and definitions—not just its size name.
