Yes—Gran Turismo 7 is worth playing if you want structured circuit racing, car collecting, tuning, and a long-term progression loop. Choose PS5 for the listed next-generation features and access to PS VR2; PS4 is a supported option if you already own that console and do not need VR. The key caveat is that only Arcade Mode is available offline.

Does GT7 require a PS5 for VR?
Yes. The PS VR2 experience requires both the PS5 version of Gran Turismo 7 and a PS VR2 headset; PS4 cannot run this mode. The official product page describes races, online events, and game modes in VR, except for two-player split screen. Its listed VR features include eye-tracked foveated rendering, dynamic 3D audio, and a VR Showroom. Check the official product information for details.

VR is a meaningful reason to choose PS5 if immersive driving is a priority, but it is not essential to play the game. The PlayStation Store also cautions that some players may experience motion sickness.
What is in the game, and is it still receiving updates?
Polyphony Digital’s current Gran Turismo 7 product page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists over 550 cars from more than 70 automotive manufacturers. Its Spec III summary says the December 2025 update added eight cars, two real-world circuits, a Data Logger, enhanced Weekly Challenges, and new Café Menus.

Sony Interactive Entertainment reported that update 1.71 added four cars and three World Circuits on August 19, 2026, along with Whistler as a featured Scapes curation. The announcement is on PlayStation Blog.
On September 3, 2026, Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi announced a free Spec IV update planned in two parts, for October and December. Announced content included Sportsland SUGO in October, Autumn Ring in December, 12 cars across both updates, online Drift Trials, Shuffle Races, new Driving Experiences, an expanded Car Viewer, progression features, and a Concierge feature for buying cars. Family Mode was planned for December. These were announced plans; the October update’s release is not confirmed by the announcement itself. How much does offline play matter?
Gran Turismo’s official product information says that only Arcade Mode is available offline. If you want a campaign and broader game modes that remain playable without an internet connection, this is a substantial limitation and may make GT7 a poor fit. See the official product information.
Can you upgrade from PS4 to PS5?
The official product page says a PS4 digital version can be upgraded to PS5 for a fee. If you own the PS4 disc, you must keep it inserted to use the upgraded digital version; that route does not work on a disc-free PS5. Because eligibility and fees may vary by region and change over time, check your local PlayStation Store before buying or upgrading.

Who is GT7 most likely to suit?
- Choose GT7 if you want circuit-focused racing, car collecting, tuning, and a sustained progression loop.
- Choose PS5 if its listed rendering, controller, and audio features matter to you, or you want PS VR2.
- Stick with PS4 if you already own one and want the base game without VR; the available official information does not establish a quantified performance comparison.
- Add PS VR2 only if immersive cockpit racing is a priority and you are comfortable with VR.
A racing wheel is optional, not a requirement. A TechRadar racing-games guide describes GT7 as a content-rich console racing sim, praises its solo experience and progression, and says it pairs well with PS5 racing wheels; that is editorial judgment, not a compatibility assessment of a particular wheel model. Its PS5 racing-games guide also rates GT7 highly as a PS VR2 racing game, citing the cockpit perspective and free VR update. The US PlayStation Store snapshot accessed October 4, 2026 showed 4.37 out of 5 from 46,044 ratings; that is a changing user-rating snapshot, not a critic score or fixed satisfaction measure.
