There is no fixed file size for a downloaded movie or TV episode. The storage it uses depends on the title’s length, the service, the selected download quality, and the device. Higher-quality downloads generally take more space, and Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube do not publish a universal size table that can reliably answer how many gigabytes a particular title will need.
What determines a download’s size?
- Video quality: Higher quality generally means a larger file. Netflix says its Standard download option uses less storage than its higher-quality option, and YouTube says higher-quality offline videos take up more device space. Netflix download quality and YouTube offline video guidance explain these trade-offs.
- Duration and title: A longer movie or episode will generally need more storage than a shorter one, but there is no reliable cross-service amount per minute. Encoding and other title-specific factors also affect the saved file.
- Service, device, and availability: Download options depend on the app, title, and device. A download is stored on the device used to download it; Netflix notes that users can download episodes individually or download a season. See Netflix’s offline-download instructions.
How to estimate space for a movie or season
- Open the service’s download settings for the title and review the available quality options. If the app displays an expected file size, use that title-specific estimate.
- Check how much free storage is available on the device before starting a large download. Disney+ documents an in-app storage check for supported mobile devices in its download guidance.
- If no size estimate appears, download one representative episode at the quality you plan to use, then check the device’s storage again. The change gives you a practical estimate for that episode and setup.
- For a season estimate, multiply the representative episode’s size by the number of episodes. Treat the result as approximate: episodes may differ in length and encoding.
There is no dependable universal calculation for “episodes per 10 GB” because the file size varies by title, quality, service, and device.
How download controls differ by service
| Service | Storage-related controls or details |
|---|---|
| Netflix | Standard downloads use less storage than the higher-quality option. Downloads are available on the device used to save them; shows can be downloaded by episode or by season. Quality help and download help. |
| Disney+ | Offers download-quality settings and documents how to view available storage on supported mobile devices. Disney+ Downloads. |
| Prime Video | Supported titles can be downloaded. On Android and Windows, the help page describes choosing where downloads are saved; it does not provide universal title sizes. Prime Video download help. |
| YouTube | Offline video quality can be configured, and higher quality uses more space. On supported devices, downloads can be saved to an SD card. Purchased movies and TV episodes have selectable available qualities; UHD is not available for download under the documented feature. Availability can vary by device and region. Offline video help, SD-card instructions, and purchased movie and show downloads. |
These differences do not establish that one service’s downloads are always smaller than another’s. Compare the quality choices, whether your title and device support downloads, whether the app shows free space or an expected size, and whether you can change or expand the download destination.

Ways to keep downloads from filling your device
- Choose a lower download quality if saving space matters more than image detail and the app offers that choice.
- Remove watched or unwanted downloads using the service’s download-management controls. Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube provide deletion or download-management guidance in their respective help pages.
- If your phone or tablet supports it, YouTube can save downloads directly to an SD card. This is device-dependent; it is not an option on every phone or tablet. See YouTube’s SD-card instructions.
- Use Wi-Fi if you want to limit mobile-data use. That affects data transfer and charges, not the storage footprint of the saved version.
