Your flex is a starting slot; your bench is not. To decide whether a bench player should replace your flex starter, first confirm that the player is eligible and compare the candidates’ projected points and expected roles under your league’s scoring rules. Use matchup as a tiebreaker, then check injury status and lineup-lock timing before kickoff. Without your league settings, week and player options, there is no reliable player-specific pick.
What is the difference between a flex and the bench?
A flex position is part of your starting lineup. The bench holds players who are not in starting slots. A benched player can score in their real game, but those fantasy points do not count toward your weekly total. NFL.com describes flex eligibility as commonly including running backs and wide receivers, with some leagues also allowing tight ends or quarterbacks; your league settings determine what qualifies.
That distinction matters when making a replacement: a player must be eligible for the flex slot, and they must be placed in a starting position before the relevant lineup deadline for their points to count.
How to choose a replacement starter
- Check eligibility and scoring. In your league settings, confirm which positions can fill the flex and whether scoring is standard, half-PPR, PPR or customized. Note any special scoring, such as a tight-end premium, and check whether the slot is a regular flex or a superflex.
- Compare the actual candidates’ weekly projections. Start with the players available to you and eligible for the slot. A projection is an estimate, not a promise; compare candidates under your league’s scoring rather than relying on a generic ranking.
- Evaluate expected role and opportunity. Consider each player’s likely workload and recent usage as context. A matchup or recent box score alone does not establish what a player will do this week.
- Use opponent and game context to separate close options. Opponent information can help refine a comparison, but do not let opponent rank outweigh a meaningful difference in expected role or projected points. The available comparison sources do not establish a universal formula for weighting matchup.
- Recheck health, inactives and lineup lock. Review the latest availability information, then confirm your platform’s roster deadline. Keep a legal later-playing alternative available where your roster rules allow it, especially if your preferred option plays in a later game window.
What to compare when two flex options are close

Why scoring format can change the flex choice
Reception scoring can shift comparisons between running backs and wide receivers. NFL.com reported that across a six-season span, the WR25–WR36 group averaged 2.3 more PPR points per game than the RB25–RB36 group. In non-PPR scoring over that stated span, the RB group averaged 0.4 more points per game than the WR group. These are historical averages for player bands, not a current ranking or a rule to start one position over another. Apply your own league’s scoring to the actual players available.

Use lineup tools as comparisons, not guarantees
NFL Fantasy’s Best Available feature uses projections and displays the projected point difference between using a player as a starter or bench option. Its filters include “This Week,” “Rest of Season,” “Playoffs” and future weeks. For a one-week flex decision, focus on the weekly view and treat the displayed difference as a projection, not a guaranteed result. See NFL Fantasy Best Available.

What to do if your starter may be inactive
NFL Fantasy says NFL teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before kickoff. Its Auto-Swap Inactives feature is described as replacing only players projected to score zero, using a backup list ordered by the manager. Do not assume your platform handles inactive players the same way: check its settings, eligibility rules and substitution deadline, and verify the lineup yourself when possible. A defensible pick depends on the week, eligible player options and league settings. To narrow it down, compare the candidates’ current weekly projections and expected roles under your scoring format, then account for availability and lock time. Without those details, a general article cannot identify a specific player to start.
