MLB’s public information shows a path to postseason eligibility, but it does not disclose a complete formula for choosing umpires for each playoff series. Qualified Minor League umpires can receive Major League call-up assignments; MLB says umpires hired to full-time Major League status are eligible for All-Star and World Series games. The league then announces postseason crews by round and series, naming crew chiefs and, in some announcements, explaining how the crew rotates.
How an umpire becomes eligible
MLB describes a development path that begins with umpire camps and an invitation-only prospect development camp. Candidates are evaluated by umpire development staff, enter Minor League Baseball, and may advance through levels based on performance and potential. Qualified Minor League umpires can be offered Major League assignments as call-up umpires for Spring Training and regular-season games. Call-ups may be offered full-time MLB status based on availability. MLB says full-time Major League umpires are eligible for All-Star and World Series assignments. MLB’s umpire information and a 2023 MLB account of umpire development describe evaluation and advancement, but not a postseason scoring rubric.
How MLB announces postseason crews
MLB publishes dated announcements identifying crews for particular postseason rounds and series. The 2026 announcements, for example, name crew chiefs and assign umpire groups to Wild Card and Division Series matchups. These releases establish who was assigned and where; they do not explain why each eligible umpire was selected. 2026 Wild Card crews · 2026 Division Series crews.
Crew chief and crew members
The announcements identify a crew chief for each crew. That is a leadership role within an assigned group; the published announcements do not provide a detailed account of how MLB chose the chief or distributed every individual’s on-field duties for all rounds.

Seven-person crews and rotation
For the 2025 League Championship Series, MLB announced seven umpires for each league. It explained: “Placing seven umpires on each LCS crew allows for distinct home plate assignments in a potential seven-game series, with one umpire off the field in each game.” MLB’s 2025 LCS announcement describes the rotation for those crews.
A 2023 World Series announcement likewise described a seven-umpire crew and the benefit of rotating home-plate assignments, with one umpire off the field in each game. It also reported that all seven umpires assigned to that World Series had worked the Division Series earlier that postseason. What is known about selection—and what is not
MLB’s development descriptions say umpires are evaluated, and its 2023 account describes yearlong evaluation and temporary Major League opportunities for Triple-A umpires. Those details concern development and advancement; they do not establish how postseason selections are ranked.
The official announcements reviewed disclose crews, crew chiefs, rounds, series assignments, and—in specific cases—rotation details. They do not state a complete selection formula, performance thresholds, a seniority rule, geographic balancing criteria, or a team-conflict policy. It is therefore not possible to infer a universal ranking system from an umpire’s tenure or from one season’s crew list. The supported answer is that full-time MLB umpires are eligible, and MLB makes and announces specific postseason assignments, while its detailed selection criteria are not public in these sources.
