Scientists usually do not get a dinosaur’s age by reading a date from its bones. They work out when the fossil-bearing rock formed by combining the order of rock layers, the fossils found in them, and numerical ages measured from suitable associated rocks. That gives a geological age for the remains—not necessarily the age of the individual dinosaur when it died.

What does “how old is that dinosaur?” mean?

The question has two different answers. A dinosaur’s age at death means how long the animal had lived. The geological age of its fossil means when the remains were buried or preserved, as inferred from the surrounding rocks. Scientists commonly estimate the first from growth patterns in bone and the second from geology.

The animal’s age at death

Thin sections of fossil bone can preserve annual growth lines. Counting and interpreting them can help estimate how many years the animal grew before it died, as well as reveal aspects of its growth pattern. Those lines do not independently date the rock formation around the fossil.

The fossil’s geological age

Most fossils are found in sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone, limestone, and shale. Those rocks are not usually dated by measuring an isotope clock in the fossil itself. Instead, geologists establish the fossil layer’s position in the rock sequence and relate it to materials that can be dated numerically.

How do scientists determine a fossil’s geological age?

1. Reconstruct the sequence of rock layers

In an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rocks, lower layers were deposited before the layers above them. Geologists use this principle of superposition to establish relative order, while examining whether folding, tilting, erosion, or other events have changed the original arrangement. The Smithsonian Institution’s Human Origins Program explains the principle in its dating overview.

Fossils add another kind of relative evidence. Fossil types can help identify and compare layers at different locations, placing them within a broader sequence even when the outcrops are far apart. This establishes which layers are older or younger, not by itself an age in years.

2. Connect the sequence to a numerical clock

Radiometric dating measures the proportions of certain radioactive parent isotopes and their daughter products in suitable rocks or minerals. Because the decay rate is known, those measurements can be used to estimate when the material formed. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) describes radiometric dating and the isotope clock in its Geologic Time: Radiometric Time Scale.

To date a fossil-bearing sedimentary layer, geologists may use datable igneous rocks associated with it. A dated layer below the fossil horizon can constrain the fossil-bearing layer to be younger than that material; a dated layer above can constrain it to be older than that material. Together, the relationships can bracket the fossil layer’s age, provided the local sequence and contacts are correctly understood. As the USGS puts it in Fossils, Rocks, and Time: The Numeric Time Scale, “a rock that can be dated isotopically is found together with rocks that can be assigned relative ages because of their fossils.”

3. Check the interpretation

A numerical measurement is only useful if the sampled rock or mineral is suitable and its geological history is understood. Scientists interpret the result alongside the field context, layer relationships, and fossil evidence; where feasible, they may use more than one analytical method to check it. Numerical ages carry uncertainty and can be revised as measurements or geological interpretations improve. They should not be mistaken for an exact birthday for an individual dinosaur.

What each dating method tells you

Evidence or method What is examined What it can tell you
Stratigraphy The sequence and relationships of rock layers Relative order: which layers formed before or after others
Fossil succession and correlation Fossils in rock layers, including fossils used to compare layers across locations Relative placement of layers within a broader sequence
Radiometric dating Parent and daughter isotopes in suitable rocks or minerals, often associated igneous material A numerical estimate for when the measured material formed, which can constrain the fossil-bearing layer
Bone growth lines Growth patterns in a thin section of fossil bone An estimate of the animal’s growth and age at death, not the enclosing rock’s geological age

These approaches answer different questions and work best together: relative evidence organizes the sequence, and radiometric dates attach numerical ages to parts of it.

Why carbon-14 cannot date non-bird dinosaurs

Carbon-14 enters living organisms through the carbon cycle and begins to decay after death. Its half-life is 5,730 years, and the USGS describes radiocarbon dating as useful for events within roughly the past 50,000 years. Non-bird dinosaurs lived tens of millions of years ago, far beyond that practical reach, so scientists cannot carbon-date their fossils to determine their geological age.

When did dinosaurs live—and did they all live together?

The Natural History Museum in London gives the approximate span for non-bird dinosaurs as 245–66 million years ago, during the Mesozoic Era. That range covers the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods; it does not mean every dinosaur species lived at the same time.

For example, the USGS notes that Stegosaurus was extinct for approximately 80 million years before Tyrannosaurus appeared. Fossil layers and their dated geological context allow scientists to distinguish these separate periods rather than treat “the dinosaurs” as one contemporaneous group.

Is a dinosaur bone ever dated directly?

The standard approach is to infer a fossil’s geological age from its rock context and associated datable materials, rather than treat direct radiometric dating of dinosaur bone as routine. A 2012 comment on a claim involving direct U-Pb dating of Cretaceous and Paleocene dinosaur bones from New Mexico questioned the stratigraphic interpretation and whether the reported analytical details were sufficient to assess alteration and recrystallization. That case-specific critique does not establish that every direct-dating attempt is invalid; it is a reason to evaluate the material, method, and geological context carefully rather than assume the bone itself supplies an uncontested date.
