Cheese crackers can taste saltier or cheesier because their makers use different cheese ingredients, seasoning blends and salt-application methods. Product labels can help explain those differences, but they do not establish a reliable taste ranking between brands.
What can make one cheese cracker taste saltier?
Salt may be applied differently
Cheez-It says it spreads salt across the dough sheet before baking. That describes the company’s process; it does not prove Cheez-Its taste saltier than another brand’s crackers. Cheez-It’s FAQ describes salt being layered across the dough before the sheets enter the oven.
Sodium on the label is a clue, not a taste verdict
A Cheez-It Original SmartLabel listing reports 230 mg of sodium per serving, according to SmartLabel / Kellanova, accessed October 4, 2026. That is one product-label figure, not a cross-brand comparison. To compare crackers, check the current packages and compare sodium for equal serving weights; serving sizes can differ. Cheez-It directs consumers to its SmartLabels for the most recent ingredient information, and recipes or nutrition facts may change.
What can make one cheese cracker taste cheesier?
Cheese ingredients and seasonings vary
Cheez-It Original lists cheese made with skim milk, while other varieties may use additional cheeses or seasonings. The company positions Cheez-It Extra Cheesy as a stronger-cheese-flavor option. That is useful product information, not an independent measurement of how cheesy it tastes.

Brands offer different flavor styles
Pepperidge Farm describes Cheddar Goldfish as baked with real cheese and sells standard Cheddar alongside Flavor Blasted and Mega Bites varieties. Those names show how the range is positioned; they do not provide a measured comparison against Cheez-It or other crackers.
Why can the flavor seem savory beyond salt and cheese?
Saltiness and cheese flavor are not the only parts of a savory taste. Pepperidge Farm explains that monosodium glutamate (MSG), when used with salt, can create a clean savory taste, and notes that MSG occurs naturally in foods including cheese. How to compare cheese crackers fairly
- Compare sodium per equal weight. Use the current package and account for different serving weights rather than comparing the headline milligrams per serving alone.
- Read the cheese and seasoning ingredients. Note the named cheeses and seasonings, but do not treat ingredient order by itself as a taste ranking.
- Check the variety description. Labels such as Extra Cheesy or Flavor Blasted indicate how a product is marketed, not a controlled sensory score.
- Use your own taste test for the final call. The product descriptions and label information explain potential differences; they do not establish a controlled side-by-side ranking of Cheez-It and Goldfish.
