Neither biochar nor activated carbon is universally better for removing chromium from water. Results depend on the specific carbon, chromium species measured, pH, salinity and other water chemistry, and whether the test measures chromium transferred to a solid or only a change in Cr(VI). A direct comparison found higher capacity for its granular activated carbon than for its South African coal char—but coal char is not biochar, so that result does not establish a general ranking of activated carbon against biochar.
What counts as chromium removal?
Chromium in water may be measured as hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), or as total chromium, which includes Cr(VI) and trivalent chromium, Cr(III). Some carbon materials can reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III), adsorb chromium onto their surfaces, or do both. Reduction changes chromium’s form, but it does not by itself show that chromium has left the water: dissolved Cr(III) still contributes to total chromium.
The U.S. EPA’s 1979 report on activated-carbon treatment describes two mechanisms: adsorption of hexavalent chromium onto carbon and reduction to the trivalent state. It also reports batch and continuous-flow packed-column laboratory work, underscoring that a result from one test setup may not predict performance in another. EPA report abstract
- Cr(VI) removal: indicates that less hexavalent chromium remains, but does not alone establish a decrease in total chromium.
- Total-chromium removal: requires measuring total chromium in the treated water, not just a change in chromium’s oxidation state.
- Transfer to a solid: adsorption can move chromium from water onto carbon, leaving chromium-bearing spent media that must be managed.
What does the direct comparison show?
Di Natale, Lancia, Molino and Musmarra’s 2007 study compared granular activated carbon (GAC) with a char made from South African coal. The EPA HERO record reports a maximum capacity of about 7 mg/g for the tested GAC near neutral pH and at low salinity, versus about 0.3 mg/g for the tested coal char. These are results for those experimental materials and conditions, not universal capacities for activated carbon and biochar. Crucially, the comparator was coal char—not biomass-derived biochar. | Tested material | Reported result | What the result does—and does not—establish |
|---|---|---|
| Granular activated carbon in the 2007 study | Maximum capacity about 7 mg/g near neutral pH and at low salinity. | Higher capacity than the coal char in that experiment; the authors also report strong dependence on pH and salinity. It is not a universal GAC value. EPA HERO |
| South African coal char in the same study | About 0.3 mg/g; its smaller capacity declined slightly as pH and salinity increased. | This was a coal-derived char, not biochar made from biomass, and it cannot stand in for all biochars. EPA HERO |
The same study attributed much of the coal char’s uptake to Cr(VI) reduction followed by sorption of Cr(III); the authors reported similar behavior for GAC below pH 3. Above pH 7, they noted that competition involving Cr(VI), hydroxide and chloride must be considered. Those mechanisms help explain why a single capacity figure cannot settle which material is better across different waters. EPA HERO record
How do pH and water chemistry change performance?
pH is a central operating variable in the cited studies. The 1979 EPA report found that adsorption for its tested activated carbon was greatest at pH 2.5 and decreased rapidly between pH 2.5 and 7.1. Below pH 2.5, rapid reduction and the formation of cationic Cr(III) changed the observed behavior. These acidic experimental conditions are not a household treatment recipe and should not be assumed to describe neutral tap water. EPA report text hosted by NEPIS

- [Filter Replacement and Long Lifespan] This system may be upgraded with a UF or a MZ filter to meet your water needs. It is compatible with several filters with various functions. Each system has a maximum service life of 12 months when used with municipal water, which is sufficient to cover the needs of an entire household. Before going on vacation, please Put the filters in separate sealed plastic bags, and store the bags in your refrigerator (NOT the freezer) to keep it fresh in 30 days.
The direct GAC–coal-char comparison also found pH and salinity affected capacity. Competition from dissolved species can further influence uptake. Therefore, a meaningful comparison needs water chemistry relevant to the intended application, rather than a ranking based only on the carbon name or a result from strongly acidic test water. What have biochar studies found?
Biochar results vary with feedstock, production and modification. The studies below illustrate that variability; their figures come from separate experiments and should not be treated as a head-to-head comparison with GAC.

| Biochar tested | Study conditions and reported finding | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Eucalyptus-bark biochar | A 2017 batch study reported complete aqueous Cr(VI) removal at pH 1–2. At pH 2, about 55% of total chromium was sorbed onto the biochar; XPS analysis of sorbed chromium reported about 82% Cr(III) and 18% Cr(VI). | At pH 1, sorption was negligible despite complete aqueous Cr(VI) removal, illustrating why a Cr(VI) result is not interchangeable with total-chromium removal. The biochar was made by oxygen-free pyrolysis at 500 °C; the authors described carboxylic groups as important to sorption, phenolic groups as contributing to reduction, and dissolved organic matter as facilitating aqueous reduction. EPA HERO record for the 2017 study |
| Magnetic and unmodified rice-husk biochar | In one 2018 study, the magnetic composite achieved 84.3% Cr(VI) removal and an equilibrium capacity of 8.35 mg/g; unmodified rice-husk biochar achieved 26.5% and 2.63 mg/g. | These are paired results within that study, attributed chiefly to iron oxide and reactive carbon features; they do not show that magnetic biochar generally outperforms activated carbon. EPA HERO record for the 2018 study |
| Oak-wood biochar | A 2019 study reported aqueous Cr(VI) falling from approximately 50 mg/L to below 0.02 mg/L after one day, at an initial pH of 2. | This is a result for that material and acidic test condition, not a general performance estimate or evidence of household drinking-water performance. How should you compare two actual media?
For a treatment decision, compare the proposed media using the same water and a clearly defined endpoint. A useful evaluation should document:
- Chromium measurement: whether the test reports Cr(VI), total chromium, or both—and whether chromium that remains dissolved as Cr(III) is counted.
- Material identity: feedstock, production conditions, particle form and any modification, such as iron-oxide treatment. “Biochar” and “activated carbon” each cover materials that can differ substantially.
- Water chemistry: pH, salinity and relevant competing dissolved species. Results from highly acidic water should not be transferred to neutral water without supporting data.
- Test design: starting chromium concentration, media dose, contact time, and whether the study used a batch test or a flow-through column.
- Chromium fate and media handling: whether chromium was adsorbed, reduced, or both; what remains in the treated water; and how spent media will be managed. The EPA’s historical report investigated thermal and chemical regeneration, but that does not establish a universal safe reuse or disposal method. EPA report abstract
Without comparable tests that control these factors, a study’s capacity or percentage-removal figure is evidence about that experiment—not a reliable way to rank every product in either category.

Does either material make a proven household drinking-water filter?
The cited studies describe experimental media and laboratory treatment, including acidic conditions; they do not validate an ordinary retail carbon product for household drinking-water treatment. A real system would need product-specific performance data for the relevant chromium species and water chemistry, plus appropriate testing of the treated water. A generic carbon label, or a research result for a different feedstock or modified material, is not evidence that a particular filter will control chromium.
