Start by asking your employer or recruiter whether they provide, subsidize, or arrange accommodation. Get the full cost and terms in writing. If you need to find a place yourself, compare furnished rooms and shared flats as well as whole apartments, and judge each by its total monthly cost, length of stay, commute, and fit with your work dates—not rent alone.
Ask about employer-arranged housing first
Contact HR or your recruiter before booking anything. Ask whether housing is supplied, subsidized, or simply arranged on your behalf; who pays each charge; how many people share the accommodation; and how long you may stay. Request written terms covering rent, utilities, furnishings, occupancy, the address or area, and the date you must leave. Check that the accommodation dates cover your actual work period and any gap before or after it.

An employer may offer housing as a practical benefit, but do not assume that every Spanish employer has a general obligation to house employees. A specific rule applies to covered circular seasonal hiring from origin, described below.
Use the right benchmark for your city and contract
There is no worker-specific national average price or verified live inventory in the cited sources. For a broad, dated comparison, ULI Knowledge Institute’s 2025 publication reports median rents for new contracts in 2024Q4 of €1,300–€1,600 per month in Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia, compared with €750–€950 in Alicante, Seville, Zaragoza, and Murcia. These are city-level new-contract medians, not current room prices, a guarantee of availability, or a measure of what a particular worker can afford. See ULI’s report.

Use official rental measures as context, then check current offers directly. The Tax Agency’s declared-rental statistics provide municipal data and, for some large municipalities, postal-code breakdowns; its statistics page shows the 2024 edition as the latest. SERPAVI can also serve as a reference point. Neither is a live accommodation listing, so confirm the asking price and what it includes with the provider. Tax Agency rental statistics · SERPAVI.
Why an existing rent may not match a new offer
Banco de España distinguishes rental-stock measures and contract updates from prices on new contracts, as well as homes entering or leaving the rental market. Those measures can move differently, so an average across existing leases may not describe the price a new arrival is quoted. Its Annual Report 2025 found average annual real-price growth of 4.5% for new rental contracts in Valencia over 2019–2024 and an entry premium of more than 20% in its analysis. These are historical findings, not 2026 rent quotes. Banco de España, Annual Report 2025.

Use Barcelona data only for Barcelona
Barcelona’s official housing dashboard offers local trend and temporary-rental context. It reports average rents above €1,000 per month from the second half of 2022, 8,795 seasonal rental contracts in 2025 (4.6% more than in 2024), and seasonal contracts equal to 15.8% of new rental contracts in the first quarter of 2026. These figures describe Barcelona and different periods; they do not establish staff-housing supply or prices in other cities. Barcelona rental-market dashboard.
Compare rooms, shared flats, and whole rentals by total cost
For a work-related stay, compare the accommodation types that fit your duration and budget. A room or shared flat may have a lower headline rent than an entire apartment, but only a written offer can establish its actual cost and terms. Make a like-for-like comparison using the same stay dates and commute needs.

- Recurring cost: Record rent and ask whether utilities, internet, cleaning, or other charges are included. Compare the monthly total rather than the advertised rent alone.
- Furnishings and occupancy: Confirm what is furnished, how many people share the property, and whether the offered room is private.
- Duration: Match the agreement to the work contract. Check the earliest move-in date, required end date, and any gap between the accommodation end date and your last work day.
- Commute: Check the actual address against the workplace and expected shifts. A lower rent may not suit the job if travel time or transport costs are impractical.
- Agreement and provider: Verify who is offering the accommodation, inspect the room or property, and get the price, charges, duration, and occupancy terms in a written agreement before committing.
Search with location and stay length in mind
Search by the workplace area and the expected length of stay, not just the city name. Useful Spanish queries include “alojamiento para empleados,” “habitaciones para trabajadores,” “piso compartido amueblado,” and “alquiler temporal cerca del trabajo.” Add the municipality or neighborhood and your expected stay length. Treat search results as leads to verify, not as evidence that a provider or listing is reliable or currently available.
Market-wide landlord data do not identify suitable worker accommodation. A Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030 analysis published in 2026, based on 2023 household-panel data, reports that multi-landlords account for 60.8% of landlords in Barcelona and 56.4% in Madrid. Those figures describe market structure; they do not show whether a property is available, appropriate for workers, or offered at a particular price. Ministry analysis of the rental market.

Check whether the circular seasonal-hiring rule applies
Spain’s 2026 collective hiring-from-origin order contains a housing requirement for employers participating in the covered circular-migration scheme. Article 7 states: “La persona empleadora estará obligada a garantizar un alojamiento durante todo el periodo de actividad y en cada uno de los llamamientos sucesivos”. That rule applies within this scheme; it is not a general housing mandate for all employees or ordinary relocations. Order ISM/1547/2025 in the BOE.
For covered workers, the order says accommodation is preferably free or governed by the applicable collective agreement. If rent and utilities are charged, the order sets documentation requirements and IPREM-linked limits, with written terms. Check the order and official migration guidance for the conditions that apply to the specific hiring arrangement rather than assuming the same terms apply to another job.
