Google AI Overviews are not a guaranteed SEO ranking penalty, but they can change whether searchers click through to websites. Google says Overviews draw on its Search ranking systems and that normal eligibility rules apply; eligibility does not guarantee a page will appear as a supporting link. Studies have found fewer conventional result clicks on searches with summaries, though the size of the effect depends on the query, user, and measurement method.

Do Google AI Overviews hurt SEO rankings?

Not by definition. Google says AI Overviews use its core Search ranking and quality systems. A page still needs to be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link, and meeting those requirements does not guarantee it will be selected. Google does not say that an Overview automatically demotes pages in conventional organic results.

That distinction matters: ranking position and click-through are separate outcomes. A page may remain eligible or hold a similar average position while receiving fewer visits if the summary answers the searcher’s question before they click. Conversely, a page may be cited in an Overview without that citation producing a visit.

Can AI Overviews reduce organic clicks?

Yes, they can reduce clicks from some results pages, but no single published percentage describes the effect for every site, query, or country. Two kinds of evidence illustrate both the potential for displacement and the limits of generalizing from studies.

Observed behavior in Pew’s U.S. sample

Pew Research Center analyzed browsing data from 900 U.S. adults for March 1–31, 2025. In that sample, users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% when it did not. A link inside the summary was clicked in 1% of visits with a summary. The study also found that 26% of visits ending on a results page with a summary ended the browsing session, compared with 16% when there was no summary; Pew defined ending a session as leaving the browser for at least five seconds.

These are observed actions in a particular U.S. sample and period, not a causal estimate for an individual publisher. Pew recorded 68,879 unique Google searches; 12,593 corresponded to a results page with a summary in its sample. That 18% share is not a current or global Overview trigger rate. The result pages were scraped April 7–17, after the browsing month, and search features can change. Pew Research Center’s study and methodology provide the full context.

Evidence from a 2026 field experiment

A preregistered U.S. field experiment by Wang, Gleason, Bart, Wilson, and Metaxa, involving 1,100 Google users who searched during the experiment, reported an 8.8 percentage-point increase in external click-through when AI Overviews were removed. The result adds causal evidence under the tested conditions, but Google changed its page HTML during the experiment and broke the extension used to hide Overviews; the median participant had half of the Overviews hidden. That treatment-delivery problem limits how broadly the result can be applied.

The same experiment reported an 18.8 percentage-point reduction in click-through for users assigned to AI Mode-only search. That was a separate AI Mode condition, not an estimate of the effect of AI Overviews alone. The authors’ paper describes the experiment and its limits.

Why Google’s traffic statement does not settle the question for your site

In an August 6, 2025 statement, Google said that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” Google also said average click quality had increased. These are Google’s aggregate characterizations; the statement does not publish the query-level data needed to calculate the effect for a particular website, nor does an aggregate trend rule out losses for individual sites.

Google’s account and the studies above measure different things: an aggregate company view, observed behavior in a U.S. browsing sample, and an experiment with imperfect treatment delivery. Treat claims about “AI traffic loss” cautiously unless they specify the outcome (such as clicks, sessions, or conversions), time period, geography, query mix, and method. Google’s statement does not provide a universal site-level forecast.

How to diagnose a traffic change without blaming the Overview too soon

A drop in organic visits with stable rankings can be consistent with click displacement, but it does not prove that AI Overviews caused the change. Search demand, seasonality, technical or indexing problems, site changes, and ranking updates can also affect traffic. Use first-party data to establish what changed before assigning a cause.

  1. Compare matched periods in Search Console. Open the Search results performance report, compare equivalent date ranges, and segment by query and page. Check impressions, clicks, click-through rate (CTR), and average position; also examine country and device. Matching comparable periods helps avoid mistaking ordinary seasonal changes for a product effect.
  2. Use Google’s generative AI reporting where available. Google recommends its Generative AI performance report to understand discovery through generative AI features. The general Web performance data includes AI-feature traffic rather than breaking all such clicks out as a separate overall Search traffic total. See Google’s documentation on AI features and site performance.
  3. Separate query types. Compare queries that do and do not trigger Overviews when you can observe that reliably. Segment branded and non-branded queries, and informational and transactional intent, rather than assuming a site-wide average isolates the effect. In Pew’s March 2025 sample, question-form and longer full-sentence searches were more likely to produce a summary; this is context for grouping queries, not a prediction for any specific search.
  4. Connect search visits to outcomes. Pair Search Console data with analytics for conversions and time on site. Google says visits from result pages with AI Overviews have been higher quality by its measure of users spending more time on the site, but the sources cited here do not establish a quantified, independent conversion effect.
  5. Check alternative causes. Review seasonality and demand, indexing and crawlability, recent site changes, and Google ranking updates. The studies discussed here cannot diagnose a particular site’s decline.

What site owners should do for AI Overviews

Google does not prescribe a separate AI SEO hack. Its guidance is to continue with ordinary SEO fundamentals: make pages crawlable and discoverable through internal links, provide accessible text and useful media, maintain a good page experience, and ensure structured data matches visible page content. A page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link, but eligibility is not a promise of inclusion.

  • Publish distinctive, useful content that serves the reader’s need rather than rephrasing an existing summary.
  • Keep important pages accessible to Google and use clear internal links and site structure.
  • Use structured data only when it accurately describes visible content; Google says no special schema is required for AI features.
  • Do not assume AI-specific writing formats or “chunking” are necessary. Google says no special writing style is required.
  • Do not treat llms.txt as a Google ranking signal: Google says Search does not use it as a special signal.

Google’s AI features guidance and helpful content guidance explain the current official position. Google also cautions that third-party tools do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems, so outside estimates should be treated as estimates—not privileged data about which pages will appear.

How to compare claims about AI-driven traffic loss

Before applying a headline statistic to your own site, check what it actually measures. A ranking study, a click study, a referral-session analysis, and a conversion analysis are not interchangeable.

What to check Why it matters
Outcome Position, impressions, CTR, external clicks, sessions, and conversions answer different questions.
Method An observational panel, Google’s aggregate statement, query-level analysis, and randomized field experiment have different strengths and limitations.
Population and geography Pew’s study and the field experiment were U.S.-based; their results do not automatically represent other markets.
Period and product condition Search features change, and an AI Overview condition is not the same as AI Mode-only search.
Unit and confounding A search visit, query, user, publisher, or site is a different unit of analysis. Query mix, changing result pages, imperfect treatment delivery, and other traffic causes can affect results.

Sources and scope

Google’s guidance cited here was accessed October 4, 2026; its documentation and Search features may change. The Pew figures describe its March 2025 U.S. sample, while Google’s statement describes its own aggregate data in August 2025. The field experiment is a 2026 U.S. study with a reported limitation in treatment delivery. None supplies a universal forecast for an individual website.
