Scan the point’s QR code or enter its setup code, then follow the prompts until the app confirms it is connected. First check that the point is compatible with your existing mesh and, if it was used on another network, reset it before setup.
Check compatibility and prerequisites
Google Wifi is a mesh system, not a universal Wi-Fi repeater. It can mesh with Google Wifi and compatible Nest Wifi hardware. Nest Wifi Pro cannot be combined in the same mesh with Google Wifi or Nest Wifi Wi-Fi 5 units. If you have a third-party router and want to extend its signal, a Google Wifi point will not simply join that router as an extender. See Google’s Google Wifi overview and compatibility guidance.
Before you begin, have the following ready:
- An internet-connected modem and an existing Google Wifi or compatible Nest Wifi network.
- A Google Account and the latest Google Home app.
- A phone or tablet running Android 9.0 or later, or iOS 17.0 or later.
- The point’s QR code or setup code, printed on the device.
A point previously configured on another network may need a factory reset before it can be added. Do not reset a point that is already part of your network unless troubleshooting calls for it: a factory reset erases its device settings.
Add the Google Wifi point in Google Home
- Choose a starting location and power the point. Put it in an open spot about one to two rooms from another point as a starting position. Avoid placing it inside a cabinet or behind large obstructions. You can adjust its location after setup if the mesh test or coverage indicates the connection is weak.
- Open Google Home. Tap Add > Device. If Google Home presents a setup card for the point, select Set up or Next for the correct device.
- Identify the point. Scan the QR code on the device. If the camera cannot scan it, choose Use setup code and enter the printed code. Google’s setup flow may also offer Add a different way to search for the device.
- Complete the in-app prompts. Wait for Google Home to show Connected, then finish any remaining instructions. When all points have been added, Google Home runs a mesh test.
Google’s full Google Wifi setup instructions cover the app flow and setup alternatives. This procedure is for adding an extra point; when creating a network from scratch, the primary Google Wifi point connects to the modem by Ethernet. An additional point may connect wirelessly or by Ethernet where supported.

#1 Best Overall
- Google Wifi is a scalable, flexible mesh Wifi system that blankets your home in reliable coverage and keeps buffering at bay; 1 Google Wifi point replaces your router and additional points expand your network to keep the connection fast in every room[1]
- Google Wifi gives you whole home coverage[1]; 1 Pack covers up to 1500 square feet and 3 Pack covers up to 4500 square feet; points work together to create a mesh network for more coverage
- Intelligently works behind the scenes to make sure your Wifi remains fast, so you can stream with speed[1]
- Simple setup in a few steps; use the Google Home app to create your network and get online in minutes[2]
- Parental controls let you manage screen time, restrict certain kinds of adult content, and pause Wifi to specific devices on your mesh network whenever you want
Place the point for useful coverage
Google recommends placing points in open locations roughly one to two rooms apart. Treat that as a starting guideline, not a guarantee: home size, wall materials, layout, point position, and internet service all affect the result. A thick wall or an awkward floor plan may make a closer or otherwise different position work better.
Google says that using more than five points may degrade performance and is not recommended. That is general product guidance, not a measurement or performance promise for an individual home. If coverage remains poor, try a more open position with a clearer path to another point before adding still more hardware.

If Google Home cannot find the point
Work through these checks in order. Reset only after the simpler discovery steps fail or you know the point belongs to a different setup.
- Confirm setup readiness. Make sure the point has power, then close and reopen Google Home. Wait for the setup-ready pulsing light: Google Wifi uses blue, while Nest Wifi uses white.
- Check phone permissions. On an iPhone or iPad, turn on Bluetooth and allow Google Home to access Local Network in the device’s settings.
- Restart the point and check its connection. Unplug it, wait briefly, and power it again. Check any required Ethernet connection. Google Wifi points can be wired; Nest Wifi points do not have an Ethernet port.
- Try the device’s setup Wi-Fi. If the app still cannot discover the point, connect the phone to the setup Wi-Fi name printed on the device sticker and use the setup code as its password. Return to Google Home and continue.
- Reset only if necessary. A point already used on another network may need a factory reset. Google says the reset process can take up to 10 minutes; wait for the ready light before trying setup again. Follow Google’s factory-reset instructions for Wifi devices. A reset deletes device settings.
For additional device-discovery checks, consult Google’s guide to when the Google Home app cannot find Wifi devices.
