Google’s English-language U.S. Privacy Policy is marked effective October 1, 2026. Compared with Apple’s worldwide English policy, updated July 30, 2025, and Microsoft’s U.S. Privacy Statement, last updated September 2026, it describes a similar broad trade-off: personal data helps provide and improve services, while the companies differ in how they describe advertising, sharing, retention, and user controls. These company-authored policies are not independent audits, and their different dates, regions, and product scopes make a single “most private” verdict unreliable.
Which policies are being compared?
This comparison uses Google’s English U.S. policy, Apple’s reviewed worldwide English policy, and Microsoft’s U.S. English statement. Google’s policy is locale-sensitive; terms and legal rights may differ by country. Apple says its policy covers Apple and affiliated companies across websites, apps, and in-person interactions, but not third-party apps or services. Microsoft says collection depends on context, choices, settings, and the products or features used. Each company also points to product-specific notices or settings that can add detail.
| Company and document | Region and date shown | Scope qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google Privacy Policy | English U.S.; effective October 1, 2026 | Collection and use vary with services used and privacy controls; the policy page is locale-sensitive. |
| Apple Privacy Policy | Worldwide English; updated July 30, 2025 | Covers Apple and affiliated companies, not third-party apps or services. |
| Microsoft Privacy Statement | U.S. English; last updated September 2026 | Collection depends on context, settings, choices, and products or features; Microsoft also says it receives data from affiliates, subsidiaries, and third parties. |
The effective or update date identifies the version reviewed; by itself, it does not establish that every practice changed on that date.
What information do the policies say they collect?
All three describe collection as dependent on how people interact with their services, but their stated scope differs. Google says information can include data about apps, browsers, and devices, and that collection and use vary with service use and privacy controls. Apple describes categories of personal data collected through interactions with Apple. Microsoft lists possible categories including identifiers, credentials, demographic information, and payment data, with collection shaped by product, feature, settings, and context.

Those descriptions do not establish that every category is collected from every user. The relevant service, account choices, and product-specific notice matter.
How do they describe using data, including for ads and AI?
Google says it uses data to provide services and show more relevant ads. It also says content in Drive, Gmail, and Photos is not used for advertising. That statement is specific to those services and does not mean Google does not use other data for advertising-related purposes.

Apple
Apple lists service delivery, transactions, communications, security and fraud prevention, legal compliance, and some personalized services among its purposes. The reviewed policy does not describe the same explicit AI-model-development purpose highlighted in Microsoft’s statement.
Microsoft
Microsoft says it uses data to provide services, develop products, train AI models, and personalize advertising. It says certain email, human-to-human communications, and personal file content are not used to target ads. These are policy statements about specified types of content and uses, not a claim that Microsoft does not use data for advertising at all.

What do they say about advertising, sale, and sharing?
“Not sold” and “not used for ads” are different claims. Google says, “We never sell your personal information to anyone,” while also saying it uses data for more relevant ads and does not share identifying information with advertisers unless the user directs it to. This is Google’s own characterization; it should not be read as a promise that no data is processed for advertising.
Apple says it does not share personal data with third parties for their own marketing purposes and does not sell personal data under the relevant state-law definitions described in its policy. It also describes sharing in specified cases with affiliates, service providers, partners, and others.

Microsoft describes personalized advertising, opt-out controls, and disclosures to affiliates, vendors, and for advertising. The policies therefore use different language and define different boundaries; none of the statements alone provides a neutral measure of how much data is shared in practice.

Google describes account controls, including auto-delete for activity data. Its Safety Center says Location History and Web & App Activity defaults for new accounts are 18 months, subject to product and account context. That default is not a universal retention period for all Google data.

Apple
Apple says it retains data only as long as needed for the purposes in its policy or to provide services, or as required by law. Service-specific notices may supply additional terms.
Microsoft
Microsoft says retention depends on purposes such as providing services, completing transactions, business and legal needs, security, improvement, and resolving disputes. It gives OneDrive content as an example that remains until the user deletes it.
What controls can users use?
- Google: Review, download or move, and delete data, and adjust privacy settings. Activity controls include auto-delete options; available controls depend on the data and service.
- Apple: The policy describes rights to access, correct, transfer, restrict, and delete personal data, subject to legal exceptions.
- Microsoft: The privacy dashboard and product-specific tools can provide ways to access, correct, erase, or port data, and to object to or restrict some processing. Availability varies by data and product.
What should you check in your Google account?
- Open Google’s Google Account and review the privacy controls and activity settings relevant to the services you use.
- Check whether auto-delete is available and appropriate for your activity data; review the setting for each applicable activity category rather than assuming one choice covers everything.
- Use Google’s available tools to review, download or move, and delete account data. Deleting account activity is distinct from changing what data a service collects going forward.
- Read the notice for any Google product whose handling matters to you, and confirm the policy and legal terms for your country and account type.
Which policy is more private?
The documents support a comparison of stated purposes and controls, not a universal ranking. Google expressly addresses relevant advertising and says it does not sell personal information; Apple emphasizes limits on third-party marketing sharing and lists user rights; Microsoft explicitly includes advertising and AI model development among its stated uses and describes dashboard and opt-out mechanisms. The wording reflects different policy scopes, and the pages are company-authored rather than independent assessments of actual handling.
For a decision about your own data, compare the policy that applies to your location and account with the settings and notice for the specific service you use. A worldwide policy, a U.S. statement, and a locale-specific policy page should not be treated as interchangeable legal documents.
