Neither solo running nor joining a club is automatically better. Running alone gives you more control over your schedule, route, pace, and attention; a club can add a recurring commitment, social support, and shared training. Choose based on the session you need and what helps you keep running—not on an assumption that other runners will make you faster.
How running alone and club running differ
| What matters | Running alone | Running with a club |
|---|---|---|
| Schedule and route | You decide when and where to run. | You may need to fit a scheduled meetup and group route; arrangements vary by club. |
| Pace and workout control | You can follow your own pace and session plan without negotiating with a group. | A suitable pace group or structured workout may help, but offerings differ. Check whether the club supports your pace and training goal. |
| Consistency and accountability | Flexible, but you have to create your own reminders and commitment. | A regular meetup and familiar people may make it easier to show up. This is a possible support, not a guarantee. |
| Social connection | You can run by yourself while still being part of a wider running community. | You have more direct contact with other runners during the session, if you want it. |
| Pressure and fit | Less risk of being pulled toward someone else’s pace or workout. | A pace mismatch or unwanted social pressure can make a run less comfortable; ask how groups are organized before joining. |
Can a running club help you stay consistent?
It may. In a three-wave panel study of more than 800 first-time registrants for the 2019 Seven Hills Run in the Netherlands, increases in the number of a runner’s co-runners over time were related to increases in weekly running sessions. The likelihood of showing up for the event was also positively related to having certain co-runners of equal or lower competence and people with whom important matters were discussed. The authors concluded that social networks can support consistent training and race follow-through (Franken, Bekhuis, and Tolsma, 2022).
That finding describes relationships in a particular group of race registrants; it does not show that every club causes better adherence. A club’s practical value may be as simple as making a run a standing appointment or giving you people to check in with. If you prefer quiet, running alone can still work well alongside other forms of community or accountability.
Will joining a club make you faster?
There is not enough evidence here to say that club membership itself makes recreational runners faster. A small randomized-order experiment had 24 recreational runners run alone, with a familiar peer, and with an unfamiliar peer. Researchers found no statistically significant effect of those social conditions on voluntary duration, distance, speed, enjoyment, or perceived exertion. The sample was small, and the experiment does not settle what happens in every club, workout, or race (study record).

Separate observational analyses have examined club membership and London Marathon performance, and training and social support in relation to performance. Such studies can identify associations, but they cannot by themselves establish that joining a club caused a faster time (London Marathon analysis; training and social-support study). If speed is your goal, look for a club that actually offers sessions suited to your training plan and ability; do not assume that membership alone will improve performance.
Does running alone mean missing out on community?
No. Direct training partners and a sense of community are different things. In a study of UK parkrun participants, social factors—including meeting friends or family, spending time with others, and feeling supported and integrated into the community—were positively associated with enjoyment, energy, and performance. Participants primarily reported running on their own. These are associations from a specific event setting, not proof that running with a pack produced those outcomes (UK parkrun study).

A survey of 539 running participants in Taiwan also found positive quality-of-life associations with collective action and social connections among people who ran alone as well as those who ran in groups. The survey reported subgroup differences, so it does not establish one format as best for particular demographic groups (Taiwan study).

Online communities can provide a form of social feedback without sharing the same road or session. In a study of 329 runners in five virtual Strava clubs, receiving kudos for recorded activities was associated with running more and more often. That platform-specific association does not mean an app or virtual club will motivate every runner (virtual Strava-club study).

How to choose a format for your training
- Choose solo for a specific personal workout. It is easier to control pace, route, and duration when the plan needs to be your own.
- Try a club when a shared appointment could help. A scheduled run and familiar faces may support consistency, especially if you have a goal such as completing an event.
- Ask what the club actually provides. Check meetup times, routes, pace groups, workout structure, and whether beginners or your experience level are accommodated. Coaching, safety practices, and pace matching are not guaranteed features.
- Mix formats if that fits. You can use a club for social or structured sessions and run alone when flexibility or precise pace control matters more.
- Review the fit after trying it. Notice whether the group’s schedule, pace, and social atmosphere support your goals or make running feel harder to sustain.
