First, tell a paused download from a slow one
A download that appears stuck may be paused rather than failing. Nintendo Support says some games and software pause downloads while they are being played, generally to preserve the experience when using online features and services. Save your progress and close the running software before trying to resume the download.

If the download is moving, even slowly, check the connection speed and storage separately. Those are different problems and call for different fixes.
Resume a download that has stopped
- Check the internet connection. If the console’s connection test reports an error code, follow Nintendo’s guidance for that specific code: Nintendo Switch 2: How to Check for Error Codes.
- Save and close running software. Some games pause downloads while they are in use, so return to the HOME Menu and close the game or software.
- Request a progress update. From the HOME Menu, select the user page, open User Settings, then choose Update Download Progress.
- Restart if it remains paused. Restart the console, let it reconnect to the internet, and check progress again before opening software that might pause downloads.
These are Nintendo’s targeted steps for a download that is not progressing: Nintendo Switch 2: A Game or Software Download Is Stuck or Not Progressing.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Diagnose a download that is moving slowly
Measure the Switch 2 connection
On the console, open System Settings → Internet → Test Connection. Note the displayed download and upload speeds. Nintendo’s troubleshooting guide uses 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as comparison values; these are diagnostic reference values, not a promised Switch 2 speed or a way to predict how long a particular game will take. The accessed support page does not state a year for these values.
Compare the console’s result with another device on the same network. If both are slow, the connection or service is a more likely bottleneck than the console alone. Nintendo lists slow internet service, unresponsive network equipment, weak or interfered wireless signal, and other devices using substantial bandwidth among common causes. See Nintendo’s guide to improving slow download speeds.

- NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
- READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
- DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
Improve Wi-Fi before changing equipment
- During troubleshooting, bring the console within roughly 10–15 feet of the router.
- Move metal objects and electronics that may interfere with the wireless signal.
- Create a fresh internet connection on the console, and try the other Wi-Fi band if your router provides both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
- Power-cycle the modem and router, then run the console’s connection test again.
If several devices remain slow, contact your internet service provider or network administrator about the service and network. If you continue troubleshooting the router, Nintendo suggests asking its manufacturer about firmware or a factory reset.
Compare with a wired connection
A wired test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi issue from a broader connection problem. The Switch 2 must be in its dock, with a LAN cable connected between the dock and router. Nintendo recommends setting up wireless as well, so the console can connect when it is out of the dock. If an existing wired connection is slow, Nintendo suggests power-cycling the network, testing directly to the modem as a diagnostic, and trying a different Ethernet cable. See Nintendo’s wired-internet setup instructions.

Check whether there is enough storage
A download may fail to fit even when the internet connection is fine. Check the game’s stated capacity and the free space in the console’s system storage or microSD Express card. Update data may require additional room, so having space equal to the game’s listed size may not always be sufficient.
A compatible microSD Express card can expand storage if capacity is the problem; it does not increase network bandwidth or make a slow connection faster. Nintendo’s download information notes that large data volumes may take time to download depending on the internet environment: Nintendo Switch 2 software download information.
When to contact support
- If the console reports an error code, use Nintendo’s instructions for that exact code.
- If speeds are poor on multiple devices, ask your ISP or network administrator to investigate the connection.
- If other devices have normal speeds but the Switch 2 continues to fail after the checks above, contact Nintendo Support with the error details and connection-test results.
- If general troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, check Nintendo’s current maintenance information before concluding that the console is faulty.
A network test that looks normal alongside a recurring console-only failure is useful information to provide to support; avoid repeatedly deleting or reinstalling software unless Nintendo’s instructions for the specific error recommend it.
