Before you go, check current Hawaiʻi State Parks notices and DLNR announcements for the island, park, trail, and access segment you plan to use. Stay on designated trails, obey barriers, and keep well back from cliff edges and rocks reached by waves. Recheck conditions before departure; if someone is swept into the ocean, call 911 and do not enter the water to attempt a rescue.
Why Hawaiʻi’s sea cliffs can be dangerous
Cliffs, ledges, and shoreline rocks can be slick when wet, while waves can knock people down or sweep them into the ocean. At scenic lookouts, high surf or blowholes may send water into places that appear to be far from the shoreline. A calm-looking moment does not establish that the area is safe. Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety advises following warnings and staying outside areas restricted by signs, fences, or other barriers. Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety: Safety Around the Shoreline
Hawaiʻi State Parks also warns of vertical sea cliffs, large breaking waves, and wet, slippery surfaces. Check weather and surf reports, observe posted ocean-condition signs, face the ocean, and keep away from wave-dampened rock. Steep valley walls, cliffs, and waterfalls can also be affected by rock slides and falls; vegetation may hide steep drop-offs beside trails, and wet ground or loose, crumbly soil and rock call for extra caution. How to check whether your trail and access point are open
- Identify the exact route. Note the island, park, named trail, and access point. A road, parking lot, trail, and shoreline section in the same park may have different access status.
- Check State Parks operational notices. Find the notice for the relevant park and read the details about closures and reopenings. Hawaiʻi State Parks operational notices
- Check DLNR announcements and emergency directions. Look for weather- or hazard-related closures, and follow county emergency management directions during severe weather. DLNR: Tropical Storm Lala closures (August 14, 2026) DLNR: Severe-weather caution (March 10, 2026)
- Read the full notice, including its date and scope. A partial reopening may apply only to a facility or one part of a park. For instance, a State Parks notice dated September 14, 2026, said Kaʻena Point State Park’s Keawaʻula section had partially reopened to the comfort-station parking lot while the Keawaʻula Trail remained closed. That dated example does not establish present access; parking access is not proof that the trail is open. Kaʻena Point State Park operational notice
- Recheck just before setting out. Surf, weather, storm damage, and post-storm inspections can change access. Do not enter an area that is closed, even if another part of the park is open.
Precautions on an open route
- Stay on the designated trail and follow all signs, fences, and other barriers. Vegetation can conceal a drop-off, and unofficial shortcuts may put you on unstable ground.
- Keep well back from the edge and from rocks reached by waves. High surf, blowholes, and slippery surfaces can expose people to sudden water or falls.
- Check weather and surf reports and heed posted ocean-condition signs. Do not use a calm-looking moment or apparent distance from the water as a safety test.
- Wear proper shoes and clothing for the designated trail. Footwear does not make a closed route, unstable cliff, or hazardous shoreline safe.
- During severe weather, avoid exposed coastal and forested areas when authorities advise against access. DLNR warnings identify possible hazards including flooding, falling trees, storm surge, high surf, rockfall, and landslides.
What to do if someone is swept into the ocean
Call 911 immediately; do not jump in to rescue the person. Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety advises calmly describing what happened and giving your location, then moving to a safe area and waiting for help. Hawaiʻi Ocean Safety: Safety Around the Shoreline
