Fortinet’s emergency patch story was published on December 12, 2022. It concerned CVE-2022-42475, a critical FortiOS SSL-VPN vulnerability that Fortinet said was being exploited in the wild. The 2022 version numbers below document the original fix guidance; they are not current upgrade instructions. Administrators should check Fortinet’s current PSIRT advisory and product lifecycle information before choosing a release.

What happened in December 2022?

Fortinet issued an emergency patch for a heap-based buffer overflow in FortiOS SSL-VPN, identified as CVE-2022-42475. SecurityWeek reported on December 12, 2022, that Fortinet was aware of exploitation in the wild and gave the vulnerability a CVSS score of 9.3 out of 10.

SecurityWeek reproduced Fortinet’s description: “A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability [CWE-122] in FortiOS SSL-VPN may allow a remote unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code or commands via specifically crafted requests.” In practical terms, the risk involved a specially crafted request to an exposed VPN service potentially enabling code or command execution without the attacker first authenticating.

The report established that Fortinet knew of an instance of exploitation; it did not quantify attack volume or the number of affected organizations. The headline is a historical 2022 disclosure, not a newly announced October 2026 vulnerability.

The advisory information available here does not establish which branches remain supported or which release Fortinet recommends for a particular appliance today. Check Fortinet’s live PSIRT guidance and product lifecycle information, then follow your organization’s tested upgrade process rather than treating a 2022 fixed version as a current target.

How should administrators remediate?

Choose a supported upgrade using current vendor guidance

The 2022 advisory’s primary recommendation was to patch as soon as possible. For an operational decision now, identify the appliance model and installed FortiOS branch, consult Fortinet’s current advisory for CVE-2022-42475 and lifecycle status, and use the supported upgrade path for that device. Plan and validate the change under your normal maintenance and recovery procedures.

Consider temporary exposure reduction carefully

Kudelski Security’s 2022 advisory suggested considering disabling SSL-VPN if it was not essential while a patch was being validated and implemented. Treat that as a historical mitigation, not a blanket instruction: assess whether disabling it would interrupt required access, and check current vendor guidance before changing a production service.

How can you investigate possible compromise?

Kudelski Security listed the following as investigation leads. Preserve relevant logs and evidence, and correlate any findings with broader device, network, and security telemetry. A single crash log or artifact is not, by itself, proof that an appliance was compromised.

Review crash logs

  • Look for repeated entries containing Logdesc="Application crashed".
  • Review any associated sslvpnd signal 11 backtrace.

A crash may be consistent with an attempted or successful exploit, but the log alone cannot establish which occurred.

Review historical outbound connections

The advisory also identified outbound connections from FortiGate devices to particular IP addresses and ports as leads for threat hunting. The address-and-port list is not reproduced here; its indicators may have rotated and should not be treated as a complete, current detection list. Use the original Kudelski Security advisory for those specific indicators, and interpret any match in context.

Escalate when integrity is uncertain

Retain logs and other relevant evidence before making changes that could erase it. Compare the installed version with current vendor guidance, investigate indicators alongside broader telemetry, and involve qualified incident-response support if you find signs of compromise or cannot establish the appliance’s integrity. Kudelski Security said its Cyber Fusion Center created a hunt campaign for potentially compromised Fortinet systems and contacted its security-device-management clients about emergency patching sessions.
