Use WPA3-Personal if your router and the devices that need Wi-Fi all support it. If an older device will not connect, try WPA2/WPA3 transition mode. If WPA3 is not available, choose WPA2-Personal with AES and keep your router updated. Do not switch to WEP or the original WPA for compatibility.
What changes between WPA2 and WPA3?
The most relevant comparison for a home network is WPA2-Personal versus WPA3-Personal. WPA2-Personal uses a pre-shared-key authentication exchange. WPA3-Personal uses Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE), which improves resistance to password-guessing attacks when correctly implemented. A strong, unique Wi-Fi password still matters: WPA3 does not make a weak password a good choice.
WPA3 also requires Protected Management Frames (PMF). These help protect management traffic—such as connection and disconnection actions—from being forged or replayed to disrupt a network. The NSA’s June 2018 technical report says, “PMF ensures integrity of network management traffic.” These protections address specific attack opportunities; they do not make a network invulnerable or replace router updates and secure administration. Which router setting should you choose?
WPA3-Personal only
Choose this when the router and every device that must connect support WPA3. It is the clearest choice for a household able to make the transition. Before changing the setting, account for phones, computers, printers, smart-home equipment, and any other devices that need to stay connected.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
WPA2/WPA3 transition mode
Use transition or mixed mode when WPA3-capable devices and older WPA2 devices both need access. WPA3 clients can use WPA3 while compatible legacy clients may connect with WPA2. Wi-Fi Alliance described the mode as maintaining interoperability with WPA2 devices, but that is its intent, not a guarantee that every older device will work. The device’s Wi-Fi hardware, operating system, driver, firmware, and router configuration can all affect whether it connects. Wi-Fi Alliance announcement, June 26, 2018; Wi-Fi Alliance WPA3 deployment guide, version 1.1 (2025; secondary-hosted copy).
WPA2-Personal with AES
If your router or an important device does not support WPA3, WPA2-Personal with AES remains the practical fallback. Use a strong, unique passphrase and current supported router firmware. Avoid WEP, original WPA, and TKIP rather than downgrading to obsolete security options.

- Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
WPA3-Enterprise
WPA3-Enterprise is designed for managed organizational networks, not the usual home-router setup. It is used with enterprise authentication such as 802.1X and a RADIUS server. For a typical household, look for WPA3-Personal rather than Enterprise. Microsoft Support: Windows Wi-Fi connection icons and their meanings.
How to check compatibility before changing the setting
- Check the router or access point. Look in its specifications or management interface for WPA3-Personal and transition-mode support. A vendor’s model-specific documentation is the best guide to its available labels and behavior. Certification records can confirm support for a particular product, but do not establish that every router supports WPA3. Wi-Fi Alliance product finder.
- Check the clients you rely on. Confirm support in each device’s specifications and keep its operating system, Wi-Fi driver, and firmware current. Microsoft says Windows 11 supports WPA3, but that alone does not establish compatibility for every Windows computer; its adapter and driver, as well as the access point, must also support it. Microsoft Support.
- Change the router mode and test essential devices. Start with WPA3-Personal if all essential clients support it; otherwise use transition mode if offered. Reconnect devices and check that each required one can reach the network.
- Recover if a device will not connect. If WPA3-only prevents an essential older client from joining, change the router to transition mode. If that is unavailable or still fails, use WPA2-Personal with AES. Router menus and recovery procedures vary by manufacturer, so follow the documentation for your model.
Does WPA3 make Wi-Fi faster?
No speed increase should be expected just from switching the security mode. WPA3 changes authentication and security protections; it is not a Wi-Fi generation or an internet-service upgrade. The cited sources establish security differences, not a controlled throughput comparison, so they provide no evidence-backed speed figure for switching from WPA2 to WPA3. Wi-Fi generation, radio conditions, router capacity, client hardware, and broadband service are separate factors.
