Microsoft confirmed that a misconfigured endpoint exposed business transaction data involving Microsoft and prospective customers in 2022. The company said it fixed the issue and notified impacted customers, but disputed SOCRadar’s much larger figures, saying its own analysis found duplicate records. The available reporting does not establish a definitive count of unique affected people or organizations.
What happened in the Microsoft BlueBleed incident?
On October 19, 2022, Microsoft said an inadvertently misconfigured endpoint had exposed “business transaction data corresponding to interactions between Microsoft and prospective customers.” Microsoft described the endpoint as one not used across the Microsoft ecosystem and said the incident was not caused by a security vulnerability. It said it corrected the misconfiguration and notified impacted customers. Microsoft Security Response Center
Microsoft said the exposed information could include names, email addresses, email content, company names, phone numbers, and potentially attached files related to business between a customer and Microsoft or an authorized Microsoft partner. The statement describes what the data could contain; it does not establish that every listed data type appeared in every record.
What numbers did SOCRadar report, and what did they count?
SOCRadar reported its findings from six exposed cloud storage buckets in a broader BlueBleed report. Its figures describe different scopes and data types, so they should not be combined into one count of affected customers.

| SOCRadar-reported figure | What it describes |
|---|---|
| 150,000 companies across 123 countries | All six buckets in SOCRadar’s broader BlueBleed report, not just the Microsoft bucket. SOCRadar |
| More than 65,000 entities in 111 countries | The Microsoft Azure Blob Storage instance identified by SOCRadar. The report does not establish that these are 65,000 unique customers. SOCRadar |
| 2.4 TB of files collected between 2017 and August 2022 | The size and collection period SOCRadar attributed to the exposed Microsoft data set. SOCRadar |
| More than 335,000 emails; 133,000 projects; 548,000 users | Categories and totals SOCRadar reported for the data. These are not interchangeable measures of unique people or organizations. SOCRadar |
SOCRadar also described proof-of-execution and statement-of-work documents, user information, product orders and offers, project details, and personal information. Those descriptions and counts are SOCRadar’s reported findings, not a Microsoft-confirmed tally. SOCRadar
Why did Microsoft say the numbers were exaggerated?
Microsoft said its in-depth investigation found duplicate information, including repeated references to emails, projects, and users. The company’s explanation is that SOCRadar’s reported totals counted duplicate material rather than representing the same number of distinct people or entities. SecurityWeek

The disagreement does not produce a verified alternative total: the available statements do not give a final deduplicated count. “More than 65,000 entities,” “548,000 users,” and “335,000 emails” refer to different categories, and none should be presented as the confirmed number of affected individuals.
Does the incident establish that attackers accessed or misused the data?
The cited statements establish that data was exposed because of a configuration error. They do not establish malicious access, theft by an attacker, or downstream misuse. Exposure and confirmed attacker access are different claims; the available incident reporting supports the former, not the latter. Microsoft Security Response Center SecurityWeek

What was the dispute over SOCRadar’s lookup tool?
SOCRadar released a tool intended to let organizations check whether their data appeared in the reported buckets. Microsoft objected to its public release, warning that it could expose customers to unnecessary risk. Microsoft said such tools should verify that users can search only for data pertaining to themselves. The available reporting does not establish the tool’s current availability or safety, so it should not be treated as a current, verified way to check records. SecurityWeek
