Microsoft announced on May 3, 2018, that it had published debugging symbols for many core Hyper-V components to help security researchers analyze the virtualization stack and report vulnerabilities. The release did not include everything: Microsoft explicitly excluded the hypervisor, citing concern that customers might build dependencies on undocumented hypercalls. Symbols can make compiled software easier to inspect, but they are not source code, and Microsoft’s 2018 statements do not establish which Hyper-V symbols are available for every build today.
What Microsoft announced in 2018
Microsoft’s Security Response Center (MSRC) said on May 3, 2018, that debugging symbols for many core Hyper-V components were publicly available. MSRC framed the release as support for security research and vulnerability reporting through the Hyper-V Bounty Program. Microsoft’s announcement described rewards of up to $250,000 USD for qualifying vulnerability discoveries at that time; that is a historical figure, not a verified current maximum.
Symbols provide information that helps debugging tools interpret compiled binaries, such as names and relationships associated with program elements. They can make static analysis more practical, but they do not expose the program’s source code or guarantee a complete view of a component’s internals.
What was included—and what was not
Microsoft described the release as covering many core components, not every part of Hyper-V. The announcement directed readers to a separate Virtualization team post for the component list, but the announcement itself does not enumerate it. Without that authoritative list, it would be misleading to name specific components as part of the May release.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
MSRC explicitly identified the hypervisor as excluded. Microsoft said it wanted to avoid customers taking dependencies on undocumented hypercalls—interfaces that are not documented as supported contracts. This boundary matters: public symbols made more of the stack inspectable, but did not mean that every Hyper-V interface or internal implementation detail was published.
How the release fits into Hyper-V security research
In a December 10, 2018 guide, Microsoft said it had recently released public symbols for storage components. Together with earlier releases, those additions meant “most symbols of the virtualization stack” were publicly available at that point, according to Microsoft. The guide linked the symbols to easier static analysis and also described live debugging as a way to examine runtime code paths, memory layout, and registers. The guide is a dated account, not a guarantee of current coverage across components or Windows builds.

The guide also gives useful context for why research can involve more than the hypervisor binary. The root partition is the host operating system, where Hyper-V management services run. VMBus enables communication between partitions, while enlightened I/O uses virtualization-aware device paths. These are distinct parts of a virtualization stack, and analyzing a behavior may require looking at how they interact.
Public symbols, private symbols, static analysis, and live debugging
| Approach or data | What it helps with | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Public symbols | Help a debugger or analysis tool identify and interpret information associated with a matching binary. | They are not source code and do not establish that all internal information is public. |
| Private or full symbols | Can contain additional debugging information beyond what is in public symbol data. | Public-symbol guidance does not imply that private or full symbols are available to everyone. |
| Static analysis | Examines binaries and symbol information without observing a running system. | It does not, by itself, show runtime behavior under a particular workload or configuration. |
| Live debugging | Can help inspect runtime code paths, memory layout, and registers. | It involves examining a running target and answers different questions from static inspection. |
How to use Microsoft’s public symbol server with WinDbg
Microsoft’s current general Windows guidance says public symbols can be obtained from its online symbol server as needed. Microsoft no longer publishes offline Windows symbol packages, noting that packages can quickly become outdated as Windows changes. This general policy does not prove that every Hyper-V-specific symbol mentioned in 2018 remains available for every current build.

- Open a supported debugger. Microsoft documents WinDbg, KD, CDB, and NTSD as Windows debuggers that can use public symbols.
- Configure the public symbol server. In the debugger command window, enter
.symfixto set up Microsoft’s public symbol server. For a local cache, use a symbol path in the documented server-and-cache form, for examplesrv*C:Symbols*https://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols. - Load or reload symbols for the target. Use the debugger’s symbol-loading commands or workflow for the target module. The debugger matches symbols to the binary; a symbol file for a different build will not be an appropriate match.
- Check the match before relying on results. Microsoft’s symbol-path documentation explains that symbol matching uses the target binary’s timestamp. If symbols do not load, confirm that the target module and symbol data correspond, then review the debugger’s symbol path and loading output.
See Microsoft’s symbols overview and symbol-path guide for current debugger details. Symbol availability can vary with the exact module and build, so a working public-server configuration is not proof that symbols exist for every Hyper-V binary.

What the announcement does not establish today
- It does not show that Microsoft released source code or all Hyper-V internals.
- It does not provide a complete component-by-component inventory in the announcement itself.
- The December 2018 statement about “most” virtualization-stack symbols describes availability at that time, not a guarantee for current builds.
- Microsoft’s current Windows symbol-server guidance explains how to obtain public symbols generally, but does not verify current availability for each Hyper-V-specific component.
- The up-to-$250,000 bounty figure belongs to MSRC’s May 2018 announcement; current Hyper-V bounty limits and terms are not established by that statement.
