A disposable email address is an alternate address used temporarily or for a limited purpose, so you can receive a message without giving a website your regular email address. Some services provide a short-lived inbox; others create a managed alias that forwards messages to your real inbox and can be switched off later. The key difference is that a temporary inbox may be public or disappear, while a forwarding alias is designed to keep working for as long as you need it.
What a disposable email address does
Disposable email services let users obtain an address for receiving—and sometimes sending—messages. The address may be chosen by the user or assigned randomly, and the service may later remove the address and its messages. A 2019 study by researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign describes these patterns and analyzed 2.3 million emails from seven popular disposable-email services over three months. That sample documents service behavior; it is not a current estimate of how many people use disposable email.
“Disposable email” is also used loosely for email aliases that hide a real address. Those aliases work differently: they forward incoming mail to an inbox you control and may be kept active for ongoing correspondence.
Why people use disposable addresses
- Reduce exposure of a regular address: Use an alternate address for a one-time confirmation or to access gated content without giving the site your primary address.
- Keep marketing mail separate: An alias can help identify which signup generated a message and can be disabled if unwanted mail becomes a problem. Mozilla recommends Relay masks for marketing or informational signups.
- Try a service once: An alternate address can separate a one-time product tryout from everyday correspondence. This does not make repeated account creation to claim trials, credits, referral bonuses, or rewards an acceptable use; Temp Mail’s acceptable-use policy prohibits that behavior.
- Test email flows you control: Developers and site owners can use test addresses to check their own signup, onboarding, or transactional emails.
Temporary inbox or forwarding mask?
These approaches both keep your regular address from being directly disclosed to a website, but they differ in privacy, continuity, and suitability for important accounts.

| Consideration | Short-lived temporary inbox | Managed forwarding mask |
|---|---|---|
| Where messages arrive | In an inbox hosted by the temporary-email service. | Forwarded to an inbox you control. Mozilla describes Firefox Relay masks as forwarding addresses; Apple says Hide My Email addresses forward to a personal inbox. |
| Inbox privacy | Some services have operated as public gateways where other users could access the same inbox, as documented in the 2019 study. This is a documented risk pattern, not an audit of every provider today. | Not necessarily a public inbox, but privacy and retention depend on the provider’s terms and handling. |
| Duration and continuity | May be removed or become unusable after a limited time. | Can be kept active for ongoing correspondence and later disabled. Apple says Hide My Email addresses can be labeled, deactivated, or deleted. |
| Best fit | Low-stakes one-off messages and testing. | Newsletters, marketing signups, and ongoing correspondence when you want to conceal your real address. |
| Potential limitation | Mail may be visible to others or unavailable later. | Some sites reject masked addresses, and limits depend on the provider. Mozilla documents a 10 MB attachment-forwarding limit for Relay; check its current documentation for availability and other limits. |
Is a disposable email address safe?
It can reduce how often you hand out your regular address, but it does not guarantee anonymity, confidentiality, or protection from tracking. The most important risk with some short-lived inboxes is that someone else may be able to open the same inbox. A 2019 academic study documented public-gateway behavior among many services it examined; that finding should be treated as evidence of a risk, not proof about every provider in 2026.
Do not use a public or short-lived inbox for banking, government, medical, financial, or other important account messages, or for password resets on accounts you need to keep. If another person can access the inbox, they may see verification links or account correspondence. If the address is retired, you may lose access to future messages. Temp Mail explicitly warns against using its service for banking, government correspondence, medical records, or important password resets.

A managed alias is often the better choice when you need messages to continue arriving, but it makes you dependent on the forwarding provider, your account with that provider, and its service limits and continuity. Mozilla says some websites reject Relay masks and that messages temporarily held during a rare outage are not retained for more than three days. Apple says Hide My Email messages are deleted from relay servers after delivery, usually within seconds, and that standard spam filtering is performed. These are provider-specific statements, not universal rules for email aliases.
How to choose the right option
- Decide whether you need future messages. For a genuinely one-off, low-stakes confirmation, a temporary inbox may be sufficient. For newsletters or an account you expect to use, consider a managed mask that forwards to your inbox.
- Check who can read the inbox. Before using a temporary-email service, determine whether its inbox is private or shared. If that is unclear, do not use it for anything sensitive.
- Check compatibility and limits. Some websites reject masked addresses. Review the provider’s current rules for attachments, replies, availability in your country, number of addresses, and retention rather than assuming all services work alike.
- Keep account recovery reliable. If an account matters, use an address you can continue to access and monitor. Losing a temporary inbox or a forwarding service could mean missing a security notice or recovery message.
- Review the provider’s handling terms. Understand where mail is forwarded, how long it is retained, and how to disable or delete the address.
Examples of managed email masks
Firefox Relay
Mozilla describes Relay as a set of email masks that forward messages to your true address, and recommends masks for marketing or informational email. Mozilla also notes that some websites reject Relay masks. Its published attachment and country-availability details can change, so check the Firefox Relay FAQ before relying on a mask for a particular signup. A separate Mozilla support article, last updated August 20, 2024, described a free limit of up to five masks at that time; that dated limit should not be assumed to be current. See Mozilla’s support article.

Apple Hide My Email
Apple says iCloud+ users can create random addresses for forms and newsletters that forward to a personal inbox. The addresses can be labeled, deactivated, or deleted. Device and operating-system requirements may apply; check Apple’s current guide, Use Hide My Email with iCloud+.
For addresses created with Hide My Email through Sign in with Apple, Apple says mail is accepted from designated senders for the associated app or website. Apple also says it does not read or process message content except for standard spam filtering, and that delivered messages are deleted from relay servers, usually within seconds. Those statements apply to Apple’s service; they should not be generalized to other forwarding providers. See Apple’s Sign in with Apple support page.
