In late September 2007, Google agreed to acquire certain assets and technology from Zingku, a mobile social-networking service still in private beta or limited U.S. testing. Zingku let people share text and photos, send invitations, run polls, and create mobile flyers using ordinary phone messaging alongside web and instant-messaging access. Google did not disclose the price or detailed terms.
What Google announced about Zingku
Reports published from September 27 to October 1, 2007 said Google had entered an agreement to acquire certain Zingku assets and technology. The public accounts did not describe a fully specified purchase of the entire company, and they did not disclose the transaction price or detailed terms. TechCrunch reported the agreement on September 27, and Google Operating System quoted Google’s statement that day.
Google said it believed the acquired assets and technology could help it build products and features benefiting users, advertisers, and publishers. That was a statement of expected potential, not confirmation that Zingku was integrated into any particular later Google product. The quotation was attributed to Google as a company; the report did not name an individual speaker.
What Zingku did
Founded in 2005, Zingku connected mobile phones with the web and instant messaging. Its reported features included sharing text and photos, inviting people to events, conducting polls, and creating “mobile flyers” for friends or businesses. The service was designed to work with standard text and picture messaging on phones, with browser or instant-messaging access on the web; users did not need to install software on their phones, according to the contemporary descriptions.

Zingku described its approach as starting with the mobile phone and extending outward: “Our service is designed from the mobile phone, outward, allowing you to create and exchange things of interest ranging from invitations to ‘mobile flyers’ with friends in a trusted manner.” The company statement was reproduced by TechCrunch on September 27, 2007.
Why it was called a mobile social network
Zingku combined social activities—sharing, inviting, and polling—with phone-based messaging rather than relying only on a conventional website. Users could initiate or receive content by text or picture message and also reach the service through a browser or instant messaging. That mix of mobile communication and social interaction explains why contemporary coverage called it a “mobile social network” or “mobile social networking service.”

The label describes the service’s intended use, not evidence of a large public community. Reports said Zingku remained in private beta or limited U.S. testing when the acquisition was announced; they do not establish that it had reached a broad public launch. ABC News/IDG News Service described it as a mobile social network on October 1, 2007.

Contemporary reports said Zingku had frozen new sign-ups. Existing users were told their accounts would transfer to Google unless they cancelled by October 4, 2007. Those notices document what users were told at the time; the reports do not establish the eventual outcome for every account. ITmedia reported the account notice on September 29, 2007, while Search Engine Land covered the acquisition on September 28, 2007.
