At Google I/O on May 20, 2025, Google presented AI as a layer extending across Gemini, Search, developer products and Android XR—not as a single model launch. The software announcements described products and features rolling out or planned for users and developers; the hardware announcements showed a future headset and glasses prototypes, not a new consumer device available at the event.

Google’s I/O 2025 AI strategy reached across its product lineup

Google framed its annual developer conference around applying AI progress to products that could be more intelligent, personalized and capable of taking action. In his edited keynote transcript, CEO Sundar Pichai described a rapid pace of model development and product releases, and said, “We want to get our best models into your hands and our products ASAP.”

The distinction between announcements matters: some products were described as available or beginning to roll out, while others were experiments, developer plans or hardware previews. The event’s broad software focus connected consumer-facing Gemini and Search features with tools for developers; Android XR was its clearest physical-product thread.

Google-reported figures from the keynote

The following numbers are figures Pichai reported in Google’s edited May 20, 2025 keynote transcript. They are Google’s claims, not independently audited measurements.

Gemini 2.5 Pro, Flash and Deep Think were the central model announcements

Google DeepMind’s May 20 announcement described Gemini 2.5 Pro as Google’s most intelligent model at the time and said both Pro and Flash were getting improvements. That ranking is Google’s characterization, rather than an independent assessment.

Deep Think was introduced as an experimental enhanced reasoning mode for Gemini 2.5 Pro. Google said it used new research techniques to consider multiple hypotheses before responding. The experimental label is important: the announcement did not present Deep Think as a generally available feature for every user.

Google said Gemini 2.5 Flash was available in the Gemini app and described planned developer-platform availability for the updated models. Those statements describe the announcement in May 2025, not current availability across every platform, account or region.

Gemini app updates added more ways to interact and create

The I/O keynote also covered a set of Gemini app updates. Google announced Gemini Live with camera and screen sharing, image and video generation features, and changes to Deep Research and Canvas. These were event announcements with rollout language, not a guarantee that every feature became available immediately to all users or in all regions.

AI Mode brought a different kind of Search experience to U.S. users

On May 20, 2025, Google said AI Mode was beginning to roll out in the United States without requiring a Labs sign-up. Google described it as an end-to-end AI Search experience for longer, more advanced and multimodal questions, with follow-up questions, helpful links to the web and a new Search tab. The stated rollout geography and date are part of the announcement; they should not be read as a worldwide launch claim.

How Google described query fan-out

Google said AI Mode uses “query fan-out” by breaking a question into subtopics and running multiple searches at once. The company presented this as a way to explore a question from several angles. That is Google’s description of its system, not an independently verified finding about answer quality or speed.

Deep Search was a Labs-first plan

Google described Deep Search as a more thorough research mode that would come first to Labs. The company also said other AI Mode capabilities were planned for Labs users. These were plans in the May 2025 Search announcement, distinct from the U.S. AI Mode rollout described as beginning at the event.

Developer announcements spanned experimentation and platform access

Google’s developer track covered AI products including Google AI Studio and access to Gemini and generative-media models. The useful distinction is the workflow: AI Studio was presented as a place to experiment and prototype, while Google’s enterprise and cloud offerings serve development and operation of services. The broad event announcement does not mean every model or capability was generally available on May 20, 2025; model-specific statements and dates matter.

Android XR was a hardware preview, not a 2025 retail launch

Google showed how Gemini might work on Android XR glasses, describing a prototype with a camera and microphones, speakers, and an optional in-lens display. Google said it had begun gathering feedback from trusted testers and directed readers to future availability updates. The glasses were prototypes, not products announced as available to buy at I/O.

Separately, Google’s I/O roundup described Samsung’s Project Moohan headset as the first Android XR device expected later in 2025. That was a future-facing announcement at the time, not a claim that the headset was on sale during the conference.

What later Google announcements said

Google’s April 7, 2026 Android XR update said Samsung Galaxy XR had launched late in 2025 and described software updates for the headset. That makes Galaxy XR a real later product tied to Android XR, but it was not an I/O 2025 retail launch.

In a May 19, 2026 post, Google named Samsung, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker in connection with partner-made audio glasses and said they would arrive later in fall 2026. That post described the glasses as future products at that time; it does not by itself establish whether they have shipped since.
