Microsoft’s Phi-4-multimodal is a 5.6-billion-parameter model that brings text, image understanding, and speech/audio capabilities into one model family. Microsoft also lists multi-image and video-clip summarization as intended uses—but that does not mean every service or local runtime accepts an arbitrary video file directly. The input method and limits depend on where you run it.
What is Phi-4-multimodal?
Microsoft announced Phi-4-multimodal on February 26, 2025, describing it as a 5.6B-parameter model. Its technical report says the model integrates text, vision, and speech/audio input modalities into a single model. The report describes modality-specific LoRA adapters and routers, which let the model handle individual modalities and combine them in supported inference modes. What can Phi-4-multimodal do?
Microsoft’s model card describes a range of intended uses across modalities. These are task categories, not a guarantee that every deployment exposes every capability in the same way.
- Images and vision: General image understanding, OCR, chart and table understanding, and comparison across multiple images.
- Speech and audio: Speech recognition and translation, speech question answering, speech summarization, and broader audio understanding.
- Reasoning: The model card also identifies reasoning use cases.
Can Phi-4-multimodal understand video?
Microsoft lists multi-image or video-clip summarization as an intended use case. The technical report, however, describes the model’s input modalities as text, vision, and speech/audio; it does not establish that every hosted service or local runtime accepts video files natively.

Video tasks may depend on how a particular interface prepares and supplies visual or audio content. Before building a workflow, check the chosen service or runtime for accepted input formats, preprocessing requirements, and clip limits. Which languages does Phi-4-multimodal support?
Microsoft’s model card lists different language coverage for each modality. A language listed for text should not be assumed to work for vision or audio.

Does Phi-4-multimodal transcribe and translate speech?
Yes. Speech recognition and translation are among the model card’s intended uses, alongside speech question answering and summarization. Microsoft reported a 6.14% word error rate for Phi-4-multimodal-instruct and first place on the Hugging Face OpenASR leaderboard as of March 4, 2025. That is a dated, Microsoft-reported benchmark result—not a current leaderboard position or a guarantee for every language, recording condition, or deployment. Microsoft model card

Where can you access Phi-4-multimodal?
When Microsoft announced the model in February 2025, it said it was available through Hugging Face, Azure AI Foundry Model Catalog, GitHub Models, and Ollama. Catalogs and service availability can change, so check the current listing and the specific endpoint’s input support before choosing a route. Microsoft announcement
Microsoft’s model card lists the model under the MIT license. That license permits broad use subject to its terms; it does not establish that a particular deployment is suitable for a given production task. Microsoft model card

Can you run Phi-4-multimodal locally?
Microsoft documents a local Python setup and tested GPU options, but those details should be treated as the model card’s documented environment—not as a universal minimum configuration or a guarantee of performance on every workload.
Software environment
The model card suggests Python 3.10 and names PyTorch 2.6.0 and Transformers 4.48.2 in its setup. These are the documented versions, not necessarily the newest versions supported today. Check the current model instructions and package compatibility before installing. Microsoft model card

GPU considerations
Microsoft lists NVIDIA A100, A6000, and H100 GPUs as tested. It also says V100 and earlier GPUs can use eager attention instead of the default flash-attention route. The listed devices are tested configurations, not a claim that every task requires one of them; memory needs and performance depend on workload and runtime. Microsoft model card
Hosted limits are service-specific
Azure’s featured-model documentation lists a 131,072-token input limit and a 4,096-token output limit for Phi-4-multimodal-instruct in that Azure context. Those figures should not be assumed to apply to local installations or other endpoints. Azure featured-model documentation
Is Phi-4-multimodal ready for production?
Not by benchmark score or license alone. Microsoft says the model was not specifically designed or evaluated for all downstream purposes and advises developers to consider language and multimodal limitations, then evaluate and mitigate accuracy, safety, and fairness risks for their own use—especially in high-risk applications. Test the specific tasks, languages, input conditions, and deployment path you plan to use. Treat benchmark results as evidence about selected tests, not proof of reliability in your application.
