There was no universal winner in the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro Max vs. Google Pixel 7 Pro skin-tone comparison: one reviewer favored the iPhone overall, while another preferred the Pixel in some nighttime photos. Their different readings of the same small set of images show why lighting and the person judging the photos matter—and why this test cannot establish which phone represents every skin tone more accurately.
How the comparison was conducted
In a test published by iMore on December 24, 2022, photographer Tshaka Armstrong mounted both phones on a tripod and used a three-second timer to photograph a family friend with a darker complexion alongside other subjects. The images included nighttime scenes with Night mode disabled and daytime scenes in overcast conditions.
Ant Pruitt, host of TWiT’s Hands-On Photography, assessed 44 numbered images without knowing which phone had taken each one. Smartphone photography author Juan Carlos Bagnell knew which devices were being evaluated. The comparison was a small editorial photo set, not a controlled laboratory study or representative survey; the reviewers’ evaluations also differed in whether they were blind to the phones.

Pruitt’s nighttime distinction was: “On series 1, there’s a boost in saturation that isn’t needed. This negatively affects darker skin tones. Series 2 doesn’t boost the saturation so darker skin tones are more accurate.” In the article’s key, Series 1 refers to Pixel 7 Pro and Series 2 to iPhone 14 Pro Max. For the overcast daytime set, Pruitt said, “Series 2 looks way more natural.” Bagnell’s comment that “The Pixel drawing out more olive tones feels truer” was a visual judgment of a tested image, not a measured color result.

Why there was no single winner
The reviewers emphasized different qualities in particular images: saturation and warmth, pink or olive hue shifts, brightness, and whether darker skin seemed to retain richer tones. Their assessments changed with the scene. Pruitt favored the iPhone captures overall, while Bagnell preferred the Pixel, particularly in some nighttime examples. Those conclusions describe how two reviewers read these samples; they do not amount to an objective ranking across people, lighting conditions, or all photos.
For a reader choosing between the tested phones, the useful takeaway is that low-light and overcast-day results may differ, and that personal preference about hue and brightness can affect which rendering looks more natural. The comparison offers examples to inspect, not a guarantee that either phone will produce the preferred result for every subject.

What Google says Real Tone does
Google describes Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro Real Tone as drawing on “more than 10,000 additional portraits of people of color” from image expert partners. In its October 2022 launch-era materials, Google said the work improved Real Tone in low-light settings, including Night Sight: Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro announcement and Pixel 7 camera features. This is Google’s description of its training and intended improvement, not independent confirmation that Pixel is more accurate than iPhone.
Google’s Real Tone overview describes work on face detection in varied lighting, auto-white balance, exposure intended to avoid unnaturally bright or dark skin, stray-light washout, blur in low-light portraits, and Google Photos auto-enhance. Google separately says it worked with photographers to portray the skin tones of “more than 60 individuals of different backgrounds and ethnicities.” That figure describes a distinct project and should not be conflated with the additional portrait count.

- It can: show that these reviewers saw different strengths in particular night and overcast-day images, and that their preferences did not converge.
- It cannot: establish a universal winner, quantify skin-tone accuracy, or show how either phone performs for every person and scene. One reviewer assessed images blind; the other knew the devices, and the sample was limited.
- It does not compare current phones: this is a historical comparison of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and Pixel 7 Pro as tested in 2022, not a finding about newer models or present-day software behavior.
The original comparison discusses Apple processing names including Deep Fusion and Photonic Engine, but the available evidence here does not establish a detailed technical comparison between those systems and Real Tone. Nor does it provide an independent quantified benchmark spanning skin tones. The fairest reading is therefore narrow: the two reviewers disagreed about the tested images, especially at night, and their judgments should not be generalized beyond that set.
