Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard gives it control of the publisher’s game portfolio, creating a route for older titles to reach more players. But Microsoft has not confirmed that any unnamed classic shooter is returning as a remaster, re-release, sequel, or revival. The deal changes who controls the catalog and how some games can be licensed for cloud streaming; it is not an announcement of specific comebacks.
Has Microsoft confirmed a classic shooter revival?
No. Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard on October 13, 2023, and said it would bring franchises from Activision, Blizzard, and King to Game Pass and other platforms. That broad catalog statement did not name a classic shooter or set a release schedule. Xbox’s announcement of the acquisition close should not be read as confirmation of a remaster, re-release, sequel, or return.
The headline’s “paves the way” idea is best understood as possibility: Microsoft now controls the portfolio and can make decisions about its games, subject to the deal’s regulatory and licensing arrangements. The available announcements do not identify which older shooters, if any, the company intends to revive.
What the deal changes about game access
Microsoft controls the portfolio, but cloud rights are separately arranged
Under the restructured transaction announced by Microsoft on August 21, 2023, Ubisoft received cloud streaming rights for Activision Blizzard PC and console games already being distributed and games released during the next 15 years. Microsoft described those rights as perpetual. Ubisoft can use the rights for its own service and license streaming access to other cloud gaming companies, service providers, and console makers. Microsoft’s announcement explains the revised arrangement.

This is not a uniform worldwide grant of exclusive streaming rights to Ubisoft. Microsoft said the arrangement means it cannot exclusively control licensing terms for rival cloud streaming services. The company also said its existing agreements with NVIDIA, Boosteroid, Ubitus, and Nware, as well as its commitments in the European Economic Area (EEA), remain in place. Ubisoft’s account of the arrangement also describes the rights as covering downloadable content released during the 15-year period. Ubisoft’s October 13, 2023 interview discusses what the rights allow.
EEA cloud commitments have their own terms
Microsoft’s Xbox FAQ says the EEA commitments last ten years from the acquisition’s October 13, 2023 close. EEA consumers who hold a license for an eligible game can stream it through a cloud service of their choice under the commitment. The FAQ says consumer and provider licenses taken by October 13, 2033 become perpetual. A game must be eligible, and a participating provider must choose to offer it; the commitments do not guarantee that every game will appear on every service. Xbox’s cloud gaming FAQ sets out the conditions and named provider agreements.

What recent catalog additions do—and do not—show
In an October 15, 2024 update, Microsoft named titles that had reached Game Pass or cloud services, including Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare III, Warzone, Diablo IV, Overwatch 2, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and StarCraft releases. These examples show that acquired games have been distributed through subscription and cloud channels. They do not confirm a classic shooter revival or establish the current catalog status of any particular older game. Microsoft’s one-year update provides those examples.
Could older shooters become playable through cloud gaming?
Cloud streaming is one possible route for wider access, but a rights arrangement alone does not put a specific game on a specific service. Availability depends on the title, the applicable regional terms, whether a provider licenses or enables it, and whether the player needs a subscription or already holds a game license. Those are distinct questions from whether Microsoft plans a remaster or relaunch.

There is historical precedent for Activision games appearing on cloud services: the UK Competition and Markets Authority’s April 26, 2023 final report recorded Activision’s past cloud availability, including Call of Duty and back-catalog releases. It also noted that the games were removed from GeForce NOW for commercial reasons. That history shows availability can change with business decisions; it does not predict a return. The CMA’s merger inquiry materials provide the regulatory context.

Until a game is named in an official announcement or listed by a service, treat claims that a classic shooter is “coming back” as unconfirmed. Check what kind of return is actually announced: a new release, a remaster, a re-release of the original, or simply catalog access through a subscription or cloud provider. Each means something different, and catalog access does not necessarily mean the game has been rebuilt or updated.

Also check the region and access method. A title might be available for local download or purchase without being streamable, or offered through a cloud provider only in certain markets. For any specific game, verify the publisher’s announcement and the live catalog of the named service before assuming it can be played there.
