A direct-drive (DD) wheel mounts the wheel directly to the motor shaft, eliminating that transmission. This can make force feedback feel more immediate and preserve finer detail, while the experience still depends on the wheelbase, its software, the game’s signal, settings, and how securely it is mounted.
How the two drive systems work
Belt-driven wheelbases
In a belt-driven wheelbase, the motor turns a belt and pulley system connected to the steering shaft. The belt can damp vibration and contribute to a smooth feel. Its flexibility under load can also soften small changes in force or make feedback feel less immediate, depending on the design.
Direct-drive wheelbases
In a direct-drive wheelbase, the steering wheel attaches directly to the motor shaft, with no belt or gear transmission between them. Thrustmaster describes its DD design as an electromagnetic motor connected directly to the wheel axis (Thrustmaster’s Direct Drive technology overview). Removing the belt transmission avoids that source of compliance, but it does not guarantee perfect or identical feedback across products. DD motors and controllers can have their own characteristics, including torque ripple or cogging.
What may feel different while driving
Because there is no belt between the motor and wheel shaft, a DD base can convey changes in steering load and smaller force-feedback cues more directly. Depending on what the game sends and how the base is configured, those cues may include road texture, rumble strips, skids, or vehicle movement. They are possibilities, not guaranteed details: the game’s force-feedback signal, firmware, filters, and platform integration all shape what reaches the driver.

- MOZA R5 Racing Wheel and Pedals Bundle Kit is designed for PC Users (Not Compatible with Xbox and ps), provides an affordable, direct-drive setup force feedback system that transforms your sim racing experience.
- Direct-Drive Simulator: Delivers smooth, detailed 5.5 Nm peak torque without the mechanical slack or noise of older gear- and belt-driven wheels.
- Ready-to-Race Kit: Includes the wheel base, MOZA ES Steering Wheel with an aluminum quick-release system, and steel pedals and desk clamp in a single package.
- ES Wheel: At 280mm (11 inches), the compact diameter gives the motor maximum leverage, ensuring the 5.5Nm force feedback feels crisp, strong, and detailed rather than dampened or weak.
- SR-P Lite Pedals(No Clutch): Crafted from high-strength steel, this Pedal with throttle and brake feature precise Hall sensors, adjustable spacing and height, customizable output curves, and an anti-slip base—offering reliable, adaptable performance for any setup.
A belt-driven wheel remains a functional force-feedback option. It may suit someone who prefers a smoother-feeling response or wants a less demanding setup. Neither drive type guarantees faster lap times; the available product specifications describe hardware capabilities, not a universal speed advantage.
How to interpret torque figures
Torque is rotational force, commonly stated by wheelbase makers in newton-metres (Nm). A peak-torque figure and a constant or sustained-torque figure describe different capabilities, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. Thrustmaster’s technical explanation also notes that game information, hardware, firmware, and platform integration affect the forces a driver feels (Thrustmaster’s 2024 technical PDF).

- SR-P Lite Pedals(No Clutch): Pure, high-strength steel gives these anti-slip pedals a rock-solid durability and feel. High-precision Hall Sensor in core allows for consistency and performance. The space and configuration of the pedals, and the out curve are adjustable for the best comfor playing and customization.
- Table Clamp: 5mm-thick CNC machined high-intensity steel suitable for desktop setups or rigs. Angle-adjustable and fits various tables.
Thrustmaster states that DD motors can provide force-feedback torque mainly in the 5–15 Nm range; this is a broad manufacturer statement, not a universal range or a recommended target (Thrustmaster’s Direct Drive technology overview). Its T818 product information claims 10 Nm of constant torque for that model (Thrustmaster T818 product page).
Current product examples illustrate why the measurement and configuration matter. Fanatec lists the Gran Turismo DD Pro at 8 Nm peak torque when used with the included Boost Kit 180. Logitech G lists its PRO DD11 as an 11 Nm direct-drive base and describes adjustable torque and settings. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a like-for-like independent test (Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro product page; Logitech G PRO Racing Wheel product page).

What to check before choosing
- Feel and priorities: Decide whether a potentially more immediate response and finer force detail matter more to you than the smoother character a belt system may provide.
- Torque wording: Check whether the maker gives peak or constant/sustained torque. Do not rank bases by Nm alone.
- Platform and games: Confirm console licensing, supported games, and any firmware requirements for the exact model. Fanatec lists PS5, PS4, and PC support for the cited DD Pro.
- Mounting: Check desk thickness, cockpit compatibility, clamp availability, and whether the mount can safely support the base. Fanatec says the DD Pro’s table clamp is sold separately.
- Accessories: Verify compatibility for the steering wheel, quick release, pedals, shifter, and adapters; support can vary by model and ecosystem.
- Output and safe use: Choose settings appropriate to your preferences and setup, secure the base, and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. Fanatec warns that rapid wheel motion and strong torque can be dangerous.
There is no universal torque target
The cited manufacturer material does not establish one torque level that is right for every driver. Consider your budget, platform, games, mounting, and preferred force level together. Product-page prices and availability can change, so check current local listings and exact compatibility before buying.
The available sources establish mechanical and specification differences, but do not provide a controlled head-to-head test of belt-driven and DD wheels or a measured lap-time gain. Torque figures are useful for understanding a maker’s stated output, not as independent comparative results.
